Previous issue date: 1999 / Resumo: O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi investigar a existência de relações entre a escolha profissional e as habilidades e atitudes em relação à matemática. Investigou também a forma como alunos, de diferentes níveis de habilidade matemática, das áreas de exatas, biológicas e humanas resolviam problemas algébricos. Os sujeitos foram 145 alunos concluintes do ensino médio, de uma escola pública e uma particular e 233 universitários. Os instrumentos foram: questionário, escala de atitude, teste contendo 10 questões gerais de álgebra e uma série de problemas algébricos. Os resultados apontaram diferenças no desempenho entre as áreas, e a de exatas foi superior às outras. Na escola particular o desempenho foi melhor, porém na pública as atitudes foram mais positivas. A atitude em relação à matemática foi mais positiva para os sujeitos de exatas, nos dois níveis. A maioria da área de humanas, no ensino superior, zerou no teste, demonstrando um desconhecimento total do assunto. Dentre as variáveis analisadas, a autopercepção de desempenho mostrou forte relação com o desempenho e com a atitude em relação à matemática. No processo de solução de problemas, os alunos ?menos capazes? não utilizaram de procedimentos algébricos, recorrendo a estimativas ou simplesmente realizando operações com os números do enunciado. Ocorreram erros devido a dificuldades da própria álgebra, tanto em nível conceituai quanto pelo uso incorreto de propriedades ou operações. Os resultados evidenciam a necessidade de um trabalho escolar que busque tornar o ensino da álgebra mais significativo para todos os indivíduos, independentemente de sua opção profissional / Y{??ract: The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between career choice and abilities and attitudes towards mathematics. It was investigated the way students of different levels of mathematical abilities from the fields of exact sciences, biology and humanities solved algebra problems. The subjects were 145 high school students &am a public and a private school in their senior year, and 233 university students. The instruments used were: a questionnaire, an attitude scale, a test containing 10 general questions on algebra and a series of algebra problems. The results showed differences in the performance of students &om the different areas, and those &om exact sciences had superior performance .The performance in the private school was better; however, in the public school the attitudes were more positive. The attitude towards mathematics was more positive among the subjects from exact sciences, at both levels. Most subjects from humanities, at university, failed the test completely, which showed total lack of knowledge on the subject matter. Among the variables analyzed, the subject?s self-perception of performance showed a strong relationship with the performance and with the attitude towards mathematics. In the process of problem solving, the ?less capable? students did not use algebra procedures, but rather resorted to estimates, or simply carried out operations with the numbers &om the proposal. There were mistakes due to algebra difficulties, at a conceptual level and due to the incorrect use of properties or operations.
