Previous issue date: 2013-05-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The current religious landscape is a consequence of modernity and reflects its adaptations on man. According to recent bibliographies, religions have lost their legitimating power in society, ie, they are no longer a crucial item, becoming one more factor in the choices of human beings before the current sociocultural context. Amid the daily difficulties faced by modern subjects, health issues and, specifically, problems of oncological character are present. The aim of this research is the religious transit of men and the influence of their religiousness before the confirmation or indication of a positive oncological diagnosis. Questionnaires were applied to 22 male patients, who were being treated in Napoleão Laureano Hospital. The questions were divided per profile (personal, socioeconomic, pathological and religious), and sought to investigate whether the hope for healing had some religious investment. After final analysis it was found that there's religious "no way" among men from Paraíba addressed in this study and it was evident the predominance of popular Catholicism and its religious tradition. In order to support the research, a theoretical survey was done on the concept of religion and how it is through the prism of modernity, on the popular Catholicism in the Northeast and on the relationship between spirituality and health. For data comparison, surveys conducted that evidenced the religious transit and pointed the coping of chronic diseases through spiritual resources (personal faith, prayers etc.) were also raised. / O cenário religioso atual é uma consequência da modernidade e reflete no homem suas adaptações. Conforme bibliografias recentes as religiões vêm perdendo seu poder legitimante na sociedade, ou seja, vem deixando de ser um item determinante, passando a ser um fator a mais nas escolhas dos seres humanos diante do quadro sociocultural atual. Em meio às dificuldades diárias enfrentadas pelos sujeitos modernos, estão os problemas de saúde e em específico, problemas de caráter oncológico. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é o trânsito religioso de homens e a influência de sua religiosidade diante da confirmação ou indicativo de diagnóstico oncológico positivo. Foram aplicados 22 questionários a pacientes homens, que estavam em tratamento no hospital Napoleão Laureano. As questões eram divididas por perfil (pessoal, socioeconômico, patológico e religioso), e procuravam investigar se a esperança pela cura tinha algum investimento religioso. Após análise final foi constatada a existência do não trânsito religioso entre os homens paraibanos abordados e ficou evidente a predominância do catolicismo popular e sua tradição religiosa. Para embasamento da pesquisa foi feito um levantamento teórico sobre o conceito de religião e como esta se encontra sob o prisma da modernidade, sobre o catolicismo popular no Nordeste e sobre a relação entre espiritualidade e saúde. Para comparação de dados também foram levantadas pesquisas realizadas que evidenciavam o trânsito religioso e que apontavam o enfretamento de doenças crônicas por meio de recursos espirituais (fé pessoal, orações etc.).
