Previous issue date: 2012-08-23 / Objectives: Relate to bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly patients with the presence of nutritional risk factors for osteoporosis.
Methods: In the elderly of both sexes, aged over 60 years, the BMD was assessed by examining Dual Energy X-Rain absorptiometry (DXA). Economic and demographic data were collected on a structured questionnaire. The identification of nutritional risk factors was verified by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA?). The level of significance in this study was 5%.
Results: The sample consisted of 71 elderly patients, 10 men (14.1%) and 61 women (85.9%). The mean age was 68.77 ? 6.73 years. In multiple linear regression model adjusted by gender (p=0.009), sodium intake (p=0.011) and vitamin B12 (p=0.003) were the variables that showed a higher correlation with bone mineral density. Risk of malnutrition and malnutrition (p=0.021), as well as family history of osteoporosis (p=0.020) are also factors that interfered negatively in bone mineral density. The variables smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol use, intake of protein, total dietary fiber, caffeine, vitamin C and potassium showed no significant impact on changes in bone mineral density in the sample in this study.
Conclusions: High sodium intake and low intake of vitamin B12 were the major nutritional risk factors for osteoporosis that affect the bone mineral density in elderly. Family history, female gender and nutritional status (risk of malnutrition) also contributed to the reduction of bone mass / Objetivo: relacionar a densidade mineral ?ssea (DMO) em idosos com a presen?a de fatores de risco nutricionais para osteoporose.
M?todos: em idosos, de ambos os sexos, com idade igual ou maior que 60 anos, a DMO foi verificada atrav?s do exame Dual Energy X-Rain Absorptiometry (DXA). Dados sociodemogr?ficos e econ?micos foram coletados em um question?rio estruturado. A identifica??o dos fatores de risco nutricionais foi verificada atrav?s de Question?rio de Frequ?ncia Alimentar (QFA) e Mini Avalia??o Nutricional (MAN?). O n?vel de signific?ncia adotado neste estudo foi de 5%.
Resultados: a amostra foi constitu?da por 71 idosos, sendo 10 homens (14,1%) e 61 mulheres (85,9%). A idade m?dia foi de 68,77?6,73 anos. No modelo de regress?o linear m?ltipla ajustado, o g?nero (p=0,009), consumo de s?dio (p=0,011) e vitamina B12 (p=0,003) foram as vari?veis que apresentaram maior correla??o significativa com a DMO. Risco de desnutri??o e desnutri??o (p=0,021), bem como hist?rico familiar para osteoporose (p=0,020) tamb?m s?o fatores que interferiram negativamente na DMO. As vari?veis tabagismo, sedentarismo, uso de ?lcool, ingest?o de prote?nas, fibras totais na dieta, cafe?na, vitamina C e pot?ssio n?o apresentaram impactos significativos nas varia??es de DMO para a amostra observada neste estudo.
Conclus?o: alto consumo de s?dio e baixa ingest?o de vitamina B12 foram os principais fatores de risco nutricionais para osteoporose que interferiram na densidade mineral ?ssea dos idosos. Hist?rico familiar, sexo feminino e estado nutricional (risco de desnutri??o) tamb?m colaboraram para a redu??o da DMO
