Learning oriented organizations are guided by a shared vision that is focused on the creation and use of knowledge in order to enhance competitive advantage. These firms will monitor competitors? behaviors to understand and learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and to transform their own behaviors, processes and attitudes in a progressive and long-term way, developing organizational capabilities that will stimulate employees to question procedures and norms related to market information and the way this organization should behave before the market. As we understand that this strategic orientation offers a unique distinction in adaptation and reorganization of processes, it is possible to perceive the existence of the relationship between this orientation and organizational performance. In the literature, the relation between learning orientation and performance is supported in different ways and is, essentially, seen as needed in order to reach superior performance. In this way, the present study objective was to comprehend the reasons of the relationship between learning orientation and organizational performance, considering the existence of different configurations of this relation and possible factors that influence the results. In addition to this, this research tried to fulfill a theoretical gap, as until that moment, there were no qualitative studies found about this theme. Therefore, through a qualitative and exploratory research, a wide theoretical survey was first made followed by in-depth interviews with academic and market specialists. Since the data analysis, five final categories and twenty-two subcategories were formed to represent the motives of the relationship between learning orientation and performance that were extracted from the data collected. Among the main results, it was possible to conclude that several mediators, known as the reasons of the relationship, were recognized either in the theory as in the perception of the academic and in market specialists. However, it was also identified new variables, not found in the theory studied, extracted from the data collection and data analysis. At last, this research, presents academic and management implications about the motives that lead learning orientation organizations to reach superior performance, besides indicating this research limitations and suggestions for future studies. / A escolha da orienta??o estrat?gica a ser seguida torna-se decisiva para o sucesso de uma organiza??o. Organiza??es orientadas para aprendizagem s?o guiadas por uma vis?o compartilhada que foca na cria??o e uso do conhecimento com o intuito de potencializar a vantagem competitiva. Essas empresas ir?o monitorar o comportamento de seus concorrentes no mercado para entender e aprender sobre suas for?as e fraquezas, al?m de transformar comportamentos, processos e atitudes de forma progressiva e a longo prazo, desenvolvendo capacidades organizacionais que estimulam o questionamento de normas e procedimentos relativos ?s informa??es de mercado e ? postura da organiza??o frente a ele. Dessa forma, ao entender que esta orienta??o estrat?gica oferece um diferencial de adapta??o e reorganiza??o de processos, ? poss?vel perceber a exist?ncia da rela??o dessa orienta??o com a performance organizacional. Na literatura, a rela??o entre orienta??o para aprendizagem e performance ? sustentada de diferentes formas e ?, essencialmente, vista como necess?ria para atingir performance superior. Assim, o presente estudo buscou compreender os motivos da rela??o entre a orienta??o para aprendizagem e a performance organizacional, considerando a exist?ncia de diferentes configura??es dessa rela??o e poss?veis fatores que influenciem os resultados. Em adi??o, buscou preencher uma lacuna te?rica, j? que, at? o momento, n?o foram encontrados estudos qualitativos sobre o tema. Atrav?s de uma pesquisa qualitativa e explorat?ria, foi realizado um amplo levantamento te?rico e entrevistas em profundidade com especialistas acad?micos e de mercado. A partir da an?lise dos dados, foram constitu?das cinco categorias finais e vinte e duas subcategorias que representaram os motivos da rela??o extra?dos da coleta de dados. Dentre os principais resultados, constatou-se que diversos mediadores, caracterizados como raz?es dessa rela??o, foram reconhecidos tanto na teoria, quanto na percep??o dos especialistas acad?micos e de mercado entrevistados. Contudo, tamb?m foram identificadas novas vari?veis, n?o constantes na teoria, advindas da coleta de dados realizada. Por fim, esta pesquisa apresenta algumas contribui??es acad?micas e gerenciais no que diz respeito aos motivos que levam as organiza??es orientadas para aprendizagem atingir performance superior, al?m de apontar as limita??es da pesquisa e algumas sugest?es para estudos futuros.
