Este trabalho insere-se no campo da Geografia Urbana e da História Cultural objetivando apreender as representações difundidas e elaboradas nos jornais Folha de S. Paulo e O Estado de S. Paulo sobre a região da Luz, no centro da cidade de São Paulo, entre os anos de 2005 e 2012. Ademais, visa estabelecer as relações entre tais representações e as práticas de requalificação urbana propostas para a referida região pelo Poder Público, em especial o projeto Nova Luz (2005-2012). A tendência em curso de intervenção urbana no Centro de São Paulo com vistas a garantir a reprodução do capital foi reforçada, no período abordado, pelo projeto da Prefeitura de São Paulo de transformar a \"cracolândia\" em \"Nova Luz\". Nesse sentido, o Poder Público Municipal foi da instalação de equipamentos culturais à criação de instrumentos urbanísticos para a atração de atividades tecnológicas, passando frequentemente pelas ações de repressão policial. Considerando a imprensa como força socialmente ativa, as representações que veicula estão marcadas por práticas sociais compartilhadas com parte dos leitores, ao mesmo tempo em que geram ou legitimam-nas. Como resultado, a representação da região da Luz como uma região degradada, cuja construção, difusão e compartilhamento se deram pela mídia jornalística, pelo Poder Público e por parte da população, engendrou e legitimou as propostas de requalificação a ela dirigidas. / This work is inserted in the field of Urban Geography and Cultural History aiming to approach the representations widespread and elaborated in the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo about the area of Luz, in the center of São Paulo city, between 2005 and 2012. Furthermore, it aims to establish the relations between those representations and the practices of urban requalification proposed to the referred area by Public Authorities, in particular the Project \"Nova Luz\" (2005-2012). The tendency in course of the urban intervention in the center of São Paulo in order to guarantee the capital reproduction was reinforced, in the period mentioned, by the City Hall of São Paulo Project aiming to transform the crackland into \"Nova Luz\". That way, the Municipal Public Authorities went from the installation of cultural equipment to the creation of urbanistic instruments to generate technological activities, frequently passing through actions of police repression. Considering the press as a socially active force, the representations that it releases are marked by social practices shared with great part of the readers, whilst generate or legitimize them. As a result, the representation of the Luz area as a degraded region, whose development, diffusion and sharing occur by the press media, by Public Authorities and by part of the population, engenders and justifies the proposals of requalification addressed to them.
