Parte do pressuposto de que as transformações preconizadas para que o centro retome sua importância se traduzem em melhorias urbanísticas e arquitetônicas que visam conferir uma imagem mais limpa e bela para a área. Analisa-se o fato de que tais transformações representam também uma revalorização imobiliária, que incorpora objetivamente valor aos imóveis a partir de condicionantes subjetivos, como o significado histórico e o poder da imagem do centro. Assim, o processo assume as características de produção de um espaço considerado como mercadoria, produzido como espetáculo, transformado para não parecer como tal, a fim de perpetrar a permanência do modo de produção capitalista, metamorfoseado. Nesta perspectiva, assume grande relevância o patrimônio arquitetônico representado pela obra de Ramos de Azevedo e as transformações urbanísticas impetradas por Prestes Maia, que conferiram ao centro uma identidade e uma imagem específicas. Fundamentado em metodologia proposta por Henri Lefebvre segue-se um caminho dialético na análise, considerando a cidade a partir de seu presente, onde a sua condição de hegemonia sobre o território nacional e sua importância internacional lhe confere destaque. Depois, se busca no passado, marcado pelas intervenções mais significativas que perduram no presente, as relações sociais de produção que explicam a permanência de determinadas formas. Por fim, vislumbra-se por intermédio dos usos e das funções as possibilidades colocadas para o futuro. Leva-se em conta na análise a atuação de diversos atores sociais, tanto públicos como privados, a exemplo da Associação Viva o Centro e do Fórum Centro Vive. Considera-se que o processo atualmente em curso para revalorização... / The aim of this work is to do an analysis of the process of revalorization of São Paulo's downtown. It comes from the presupposition that the commended transformations, in order to recover downtown's are importance, are better translated into urban and architectural improvements that aim at obtaining a cleaner and more beautiful image to the area. It is analyzed the fact that such transformations also represent housing revalorization that incorporate aimly valorization of the residences from subjective conditions such as historical meaning and downtown's power Image. Thus, the process assumes the characteristics of reproduction of a space considered merchandise, produced as a show, transformed not to look like one, in order to perpetuate the permanence of capitalist way of production, metamorphosed. In this perspective, assumes great relevance the architectural inheritance represented by Ramos de Azevedos's work and impetrated by Prestes Maia's town planning transformations, which conferred to downtown specific identity and image. Founded on methodology proposes by Henri Lefebvre it is followed a dialectic approach in the analysis, considering the city from its present time, where its hegemony condition upon national territory and its international importance result in projection. Then, it is searched in the past, marked by the most significant interventions which last nowadays, the social relations of production which explain the permanence of certain shapes, At last, it is seen ahead, by the usage and functions, the possibilities set in the future time. It is taken into account in the analysis the perfomance of many social factors, public as well as private ones, such as Associação Viva o Centro and Forum Centro Vive. It is considered that such a process, which is nowadays being developed, privilege the production of the space as a reproduction of the domination in other words, from the power and dominant politics will, and it is aimed.

The Seaports of the South Island of New Zealand : A Comparative Study in Port Geography.Ward, Graham January 1954 (has links)
The study of urban geography has received increasing attention in recent years both in this country and overseas. Its content and method have been recently surveyed, and a considerable amount of research on these lines has been done here in New Zealand. Within this field the geography of ports forms a distinct branch for study since ports themselves are a specialised part of some urban areas. Indeed, over the past few years there has developed an extensive geographical literature dealing with ports. This field, which could be termed 'port geography' has attracted some interest in New Zealand as a subject for research; but in the past, studies of ports have been limited to examinations of individual ports, groups of ports, or one aspect of ports. This present study, however , has been made upon broader lines. It is an attempt to describe, analyse, and compare the most important aspects of the contemporary character of the South Island seaports. It is suggested that the character of a port is derived principally from the nature of its location, site, form or pattern, facilities, trade, hinterland and fishing. Since these are the most important features, they are analysed and described in turn in this thesis. This systematic approach was found necessary in order that significant comparisons and contrasts - which is the essence of geography - might be drawn between the ports. The problem can be expressed in the question: "In what ways do the characters of the South Island seaports differ one from another?" "A port is a place equipped to facilitate the necessary relations between ships as the agencies of sea transport and the land," and provides "terminal facilities and services for ships, and transfer facilities and services for ships, and transfer facilities and services for waterbourne goods and/or passengers." In these general terms there are many places in the South Island of New Zealand which could be considered as ports. However, only those South Island seaports which make returns to the New Zealand Census and Statistics Department have been included in this study; namely , the ports of Waitapu, Motueka, Nelson, Picton, Wairu, Lyttelton, Timaru, Oamaru, Otago, Bluff, Greymouth and Westport. This thesis is based both on fieldwork carried out by the writer during 1953 and the early months of 1954, and on an examination of statistical and other material drawn from a wide variety of sources in Wellington and in South Island centres. All the ports included in the survey were visited in the course of the fieldwork. Section by section land utilisation surveys were made of the port vicinities of the thirteen largest ports from aerial photographs in Head Office, Lands & Survey Department, Wellington, and from actual field investigations. A large number of people were interviewed at the ports and in the towns of their tributary regions. The statistics used in this study have been related as closely as possible to the calendar year 1952 and have been presented in the form of maps, cartograms, and graphs, rather than in a series of tables. The analysis of these diagrams provides the comparative data on which three of the eight chapters are based. Since the majority of the maps have been compiled from numerous sources they have been annotated separately in AppendiX A. All photographs, except those whi ch have been otherwise acknowledged, were taken by the author. All maps and diagrams were also compiled and drawn by the author. A list of the works consulted in the preparation of this thesis are contained in the bibliography.

This thesis examines the deeply layered genre of crime and detective fiction
together with academic texts dealing, broadly, with urban geography. These
apparently separated writings are read together and against one another in order
to reveal answers to important questions of how the city is organized and
arranged in its texts. In particular, this thesis analyzes certain structures in place in
forms of textual representation, structures which have deep implications for the
writing of the city. Edgar Allan Poe's Dupin stories appear alongside Michael
Dibdin's Aurelio Zen novels, and Christopher Prendergast's study of Paris in the
nineteenth century. Walter Mosley's series of Los Angeles mysteries are discussed
in the context of particularly prominent academic representations of L.A.
Reading such a diverse collection of texts together and against one another
is a deliberate tactic, intended to draw out the similar structures in place in very
different forms of writing. Those structures are the critical issue here, specifically
with regard to the need for examinations of the city that consider not merely which
components of the city appear in texts about the city, but also how the city
appears in text. How the city appears in text has a good deal to do with the
demands exercised by the medium of representation, and a key concern here is to
draw out the need for doing away with an often unquestioned separation between
places—cities—and their texts. Instead what is studied and ultimately proposed
here is a focus on the intersection between subject and textual structure, and how
that intersection actively produces the city.

Neo-Liberalism, the Islamic Revival, and Urban Development in Post-War, Post-Socialist SarajevoMoses, Zev 22 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the confluence between pan-Islamist politics, neo-liberalism and urban development in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. After tracing a history of the Islamic revival in Bosnia, I examine the results of neo-liberal policy in post-war Bosnia, particularly regarding the promises of neo-liberal institutions and think tanks that privatization and inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) would de-politicize the economy and strip ethno-religious nationalist elites of their power over state-owned firms. By analyzing three prominent new urban developments in Sarajevo, all financed by FDI from the Islamic world and brought about by the privatization of urban real-estate, I show how neo-liberal policy has had unintended outcomes in Sarajevo that contradict the assertions of policy makers. In examining urban change, I bring out the role played by the city in mediating between both elites and citizens, and between the seemingly contradictory projects of pan-Islamism and neo-liberalism.
