Previous issue date: 2003 / The increase in the elderly population all over the world makes it necessary to achieve knowledge on healthy and pathological aging. In this context, this study investigated the hematological profile of a sample comprising elderly who participate in informal social groups in Gravataí, a municipality in southern Brazil. A subgroup of elderly was selected through an uptight clinical and laboratory evaluation, showing a 6. 17% prevalence of apparently healthy elderly (IAS). The following hematological parameters were assessed: hemogram, platelets, hematimetric indexes (MCV, MCHC, RDW), ferritin, B12, and folate. The results showed a 4. 3% prevalence of anemia in the IAS. Then they were compared with a control group of young adults: there was no statistically significant difference in the values of hematocrit, hemoglobin, leukocytes, platelets and vitamin B12 levels. The mean values of MCV, RDW, eosinophils, folate and ferritin were higher in the elderly (p<0. 001;0. 042; 0. 038; 0. 003; 0. 022, respectively) than in the young. The mean values of platelets and MCHC were higher in the young, in a statistically significant way (p<0. 024;0. 015, respectively). Nutritional indicators were compared between the apparently healthy elderly and the other elderly, and no statistically significant difference occurred between both groups. Another comparison was made between nutritional indicators of anemic and non-anemic apparently healthy elderly, showing statistically significant differences in the values of vitamin B12 and protein intake, which were lower in the anemic elderly (p<0. 0001; 0. 0001).The results herein presented are in agreement with existing data in literature, but indicate the need for further studies on the characteristics of aging in the hematological system in order that disease signs can be identified earlier. / O aumento da população mundial de idosos torna premente a aquisição de conhecimento sobre o envelhecimento saudável e patológico. Neste contexto, este estudo investigou parâmetros hematológicos e nutricionais de um subgrupo de 46 idosos aparentemente saudáveis (IAS), selecionados através de avaliação clínica e laboratorial a partir de uma amostra de 745 idosos que participam de grupos sociais informais em Gravataí, município da região sul do Brasil. Foram analisados os seguintes parâmetros hematológicos: hemograma, plaquetas, índices hematimétricos (volume corpuscular médio - VCM, concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média – CHCM e red cell distribution width - RDW), ferritina, vitamina B12 e folato. Também foram analisados os seguintes parâmetros nutricionais (determinados a partir do recordatório 24 horas): calorias totais, macronutrientes e micronutrientes ingeridos. Os resultados mostraram uma prevalência de 6,17% de IAS e uma prevalência de 4,3% de anemia nestes idosos. Quando comparados com um grupo controle de adultos jovens, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa quanto aos valores de hematócrito, hemoglobina, leucócitos e dosagem de vitamina B12. Os valores médios do VCM, RDW, eosinófilos, folato e ferritina foram mais elevados nos idosos (p=0,001; p=0,042; p=0,038; p=0,003; p=0,022, respectivamente) do que nos jovens. Já os valores médios de plaquetas (p=0,024) e de CHCM (p=0,015) foram maiores nos jovens. Na comparação dos parâmetros nutricionais entre os IAS e os demais idosos, não ocorreu diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os dois grupos. A comparação adicional feita entre os idosos aparentemente saudáveis anêmicos e não anêmicos, mostrou valores de vitamina B12 e ingestão de proteínas mais baixos nos idosos anêmicos (p<0,001; p<0,001).Os resultados aqui apresentados corroboram dados existentes na literatura e indicam a necessidade de novos estudos sobre as características do envelhecimento saudável e patológico do sistema hematológico.
