The purpose of this study was to research how teachers educate students who are present but not participating during physical education and health classes. The purpose was also to find out the teachers’ goals for the alternative education and how this is anchored in the curriculum. There has been past research about absence from physical education and health classes, but there is a knowledge gap regarding how teachers are supposed to handle students who are present but not participating. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with teachers in the south of Sweden. The selection of participants, teachers, was chosen both from a convenience and a time aspect. Two separate groups emerged from the results of the study. One group felt that the time pressure made it hard to plan and carry through the alternative education for the students who do not participate in the regular education. The other group had a predetermined plan with the purpose that all students who came to the lesson in physical education and health could participate on their own terms. The analysis of the results is connected to our theoretical starting point which for this study is the curriculum theory. One thing, among others, which came to light during the analysis was that the teachers who work towards including all students in the regular education has a goal and assessment that is more in line with the knowledge requirements than the teachers who let the non-participating students sit on the side or take a walk. The results of this study are not possible to generalize but can be of interest for further research into the subject.
