Islamofobi i läromedel? : En innehållsanalys gällande öppna och slutna föreställningar om muslimer och islam i digitala läromedel

Given the increased debates concerning Muslims and Islamophobia in Sweden, the purpose of this essay has been to investigate the ways in which open and closed views about Muslims and Islam are expressed in digital teaching materials for lower and upper secondary school in the subject of religious studies, through a theoretical lens of Islamophobia. The first two investigated issues have therefore dealt with the ways in which open and closed ideas about Muslims and Islam are expressed in the teaching materials. The third and final question concerns whether Islamophobia appears through the content of the teaching materials or not. To define and theorize Islamophobia, The Runnymede Trust's (1997) and Gardell's (2011) writings on Islamophobia have been used. Thereby, the analysis has been based on four characteristics of Islamophobia. With the help of qualitative content analysis, the material has been reviewed and analyzed to answer the questions through the various characteristics of Islamophobia. Open ideas about Muslims and Islam through all characteristics could be found in the analyzed teaching materials, which shows that all teaching materials introduce the reader to the greater complexity that can be found within Islam. Concurrently, closed ideas about Muslims and Islam could also be found in all teaching materials, specifically regarding Muslims and Islam as monolithic and violent. As a result, it could be ascertained that Islamophobic notions appeared in all teaching materials, something which, on the other hand, can be thought to be difficult, if not impossible, to completely avoid. Knowledge of expressions of Islamophobia is however valuable in the work of countering it.
