The professionalisation of aromatherapy: a case study of the professionalisation of complementary and alternative medicine in the Australian health care systemSheen, Janelle Gwen Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine aromatherapy practice in relation to its claim of being or becoming a profession. This process of professionalisation is explored within the current context where the status of complementary and alternative medicines within the Australian health care system, like aromatherapy practice, is currently influenced by medical dominance and broader social and political scrutiny. This investigation of aromatherapy practice may provide a model for the general professionalisation, or development, of complementary and alternative medicine in Australian health care today. Critical theory was employed as the primary methodology of this study. As critical theory has no defined method for data collection, grounded theory data collection and analysis methods were used to obtain current and relevant data from two of the most prominent users of aromatherapy practice in health care, aromatherapists and nurses. The study found that while aromatherapy is often referred to as a profession, it fails to meet the criteria for being considered a profession in the ‘true’ sense. The data also revealed felt dissatisfactions experienced by aromatherapists’ to be due to the lack of recognition of the practice and a perceived double bind regarding the need to establish an appropriate knowledge base via scientific research and maintaining the ‘essence’ of aromatherapy practice. Considering the professionalisation process and the requirements of the system (health care and Government) a number of potential pathways for the development of aromatherapy practice were explored. The findings and discussion have relevance to other complementary and alternative modalities endeavouring to professionalise and or increase their status within the Australian health care system. In addition the study considers the related public felt dissatisfaction and revealed false consciousness relating to a broader social change and the integration of holistic and biomedical practices in health care.

Reiki: Practitioners Perceptions of the Effectiveness of a Complementary Therapy in the Treatment Regime of People with DementiaWebber, Graham Ross, graham.webber@bigpond.com January 2006 (has links)
International and national research has shown that the use of complementary therapies (often referred to in the scientific literature as either alternative therapies or unconventional therapies) is widespread. However, there is little in the scientific literature about the use of complementary therapies in the treatment regime of people with dementia. Specifically, there have been no published results of investigations into the use of Reiki, a holistic complementary therapy, in the treatment regime of people with dementia.
Before proceeding with an in-depth examination into the use of Reiki in the care of people with dementia, a questionnaire containing both closed and open-ended questions was distributed to 162 South Australian High Care Residential Facilities (formerly called Nursing Homes) in 2002. The return rate was 58.0% (n=94) of which 50.0% of the mail out (n=81) was available for analysis. Findings from the questionnaires suggested that a wide range of complementary therapies including aromatherapy, massage, music, behaviour therapy, healing touch, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch (Krieger/Kunz method) were used regularly within South Australian High Care Residential Facilities. Complementary therapies were reportedly used to calm residents, improve behaviour management, enhance the quality of life of residents, promote 1:1 interaction, stimulate the senses, and reduce the need for medication.
Due to 15 facilities reporting the use of Reiki, a series of semi-structured interviews with Reiki practitioners caring for people with dementia was conducted in 2004/2005. Interview participants (n=10) included a representative range of people providing care for people with dementia in eight Nursing Homes in Adelaide, South Australia. Data reduction methods included a quasi-statistical counting of key words and repeated re-readings of the transcripts to discover the essences, abstract the meanings and arrange them into themes and sub-themes.
The results of the interviews suggested that Reiki is an easy to learn and easy to use holistic complementary therapy which has the potential to enhance the quality of life of the persons with dementia, their family members, and their carers. The interview participants reported improved physical, psychological, mental and emotional well-being as well as enhanced relationships and a reduction in negative behaviours following the use of Reiki.
The receipt of the first Jack Loader Scholarship from the Rosemary Foundation for Memory Support Inc. in early 2005 enabled the researcher to transfer to full-time studies from April 2005.
Key Words: aged care; alternative therapies; complementary therapies; dementia; early onset dementia; one to one interaction; quality of life; Reiki; therapeutic touch; unconventional therapies.

Effects of Aromatherapy on Depression Mood and Heart Rate Variability in Institute Elders / 芳香療法改善安養護機構老年住民憂鬱情緒及心率變異度之成效探討Ju-Yin Chu, 朱如茵 January 2003 (has links)
碩士 / 國立陽明大學 / 臨床護理研究所 / 91 / Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of the aromatherapy in improving the depressed mood and heart rate variability(HRV) for the older residents in long-term care(LTC) institutions. The research design of experimental study was used with purposeful sampling from one LTC institution in Taipei. There was totally 64 residents in the study; 31of them in the experimental group, whereas the remain 33 were in the control group. Experimental group was aromatized with angustifolia lavender oil 5-6hours/ per day in the evening from 6pm to 12pm for 7days continuously. Friedman two-way analysis of variance by rank was used to test the differences among three time period for aromatherapy for residents which were before aromatherapy, after 1 day, and after 7 days on subjects’ depressed mood and HRV.
The result revealed the depressed mood was greatly improved after receiving 7 days of the aromatherapy for residents in the experimental group. The depression score in the experimental group had decreased from 93.9(SD=17.7)to 75.4(SD=15.7)and the test result was statistically significant(x2=40.667, p<.001).
When comparing the differences of intervening time period, the normalized low-frequency power and low/high frequency power ratio of HRV for residents in the experimental group had significant by decreased(x2=18.078, p<.001;x2=23.243, p<.001 respectively), whereas the normalized high-frequency power for them was statistically significant increased(x2=21.922, p<.001)from baseline to 1day and 7 days after the aromatherapy.
According to the results of this study, the aromatherapy can significantly improve the depression mood and increase the activity of parasympathetic and decrease sympathetic activity. This study suggests the application of aromatherapy can not only improve psycho-social status of residents’ in long-term care institution but also prevent them from the deterioration of chronically diseases which was induced by the depressed mood and heart rate disorder. Therefore, the expenditure of the medical care cost can be saved, and the quality of life of residents’ can be improved by using aromatherapy in LTC institutions.

Aromatherapists' workplace situations and service adjustments in Taiwan / 台灣芳療師的職場情境與服務調適Chia-Ming Lin, 林佳明 January 2014 (has links)
碩士 / 亞洲大學 / 休閒與遊憩管理學系 / 102 / In the aromatherapy industry in Taiwan, due to the confusing professional
certification system and nationals’ misunderstanding of this profession, there have
been some misconceptions and misapprehension about the social status and role of
aromatherapists. As a result, it is common for aromatherapy business practitioners to
encounter a lot of work pressure and profession-related frustrations. Thus, this study
adopted the in-depth interview method, a qualitative research method, with 7
aromatherapists as the interviewees, to explore aromatherapists’ professional
environment, service obstructions, achievements, and professional adjustments.
This study found that in Taiwan the professional environment for
aromatherapists is a working environment with a short history of industrial
development, a vague professional system, a low professional status, and some
cultural prejudices about this profession from the general public. Thus, in the process
of the professional development of an aromatherapist, the most commonly
encountered setbacks include: professional exhaustion, insufficient professionalism,
sexual harassment, and job discrimination. Aromatherapists’ achievements can be
summarized into 3 aspects, customers’ recognition and feedbacks, benefitting families
and friends around, and personal improvements in body, mind, and soul. And in the
face of frustration, the interviewees’ ways of adjustments can be summarized into 6
categories: physical and psychological relief, support from community, dependence
on vision of the future, professional upgrade, value reconstruction and changing.

Physiological States and Health Care Utilizations among Adult Female Patients with Rhinitis at a Medical Center in Central Taiwan / 台灣中部某醫學中心成年女性鼻炎患者生理狀態與醫療利用情形Ting-Ting Yen, 顏廷廷 January 2014 (has links)
碩士 / 南華大學 / 自然醫學研究所 / 102 / Background and Purpose: Little is known about the factors influencing adult female patients’ choices of conventional treatments, or utilization of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) for the treatment of rhinitis. This study was focused on investigating the physiological factors associated with the different utilizations of western medicine and complementary and alternative medicines among female patients with rhinitis in Taiwan.
Study design: A cross-sectional survey.
Materials and Methods: Female patients with physician-diagnosed rhinitis from the outpatient departments of otolaryngology and traditional Chinese medicine in a medical center in central Taiwan were invited to participate. The diagnosis of rhinitis was based on rhinoscopy examination and patients’ reports of typical symptoms persisting for 2 weeks or more. Patients under 20 years of age or with nasal malignancies were excluded from this study. Socio-demographic, lifestyle information, perceived general health status, disease-specific quality of life (Chinese version of 31-item Rhinosinusitis Outcome measure, CRSOM-31), and previous choices of treatment modalities for rhinitis of the participants were assessed by face-to-face interview. Descriptive statistics, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the independent factors associated with the physiological states and the different treatment modalities.
Results: 329 subjects were successfully interviewed from July 2012 to June 2013. The average age, height, weight and body mass index were 47.6 years, 157.6cm, 57.9kg and 23.4kg/m2, respectively. More than 70% patients were married and the average CRSOM-31 symptom-impact score was 188.8±115.7 (mean± S.D.). In terms of their physiological states, 71.1% of patients had previously been pregnant, 65% of patients had a history of dysmenorrhea and 46.2% patients were in the menopausal state. The symptoms of rhinitis were much milder in elderly patients who had been pregnant and were in menopausal state. However, more severe symptoms were seen in patients with history of dysmenorrhea and irregular menstrual cycle. The use of treatment modalities, 85.1% of the patients had used conventional western medicine, 46.8% had used at least one kind of CAM (29.2% had used traditional medicine, 17.6% had used diet -based therapy, and 5.5% had used aromatherapy or art therapy). Additionally, results from multiple logistic regression revealed that traditional medicine utilization was associated independently with the respondents categorized as underweight (BMI<18.5kg/m2) (P=0.005) and poor perceived health status (P =0.009). CAM utilization was associated independently with the respondents categorized as age (>40 y/o) (P=0.012), occasional vegetarian (P=0.003), poor perceived health status (P =0.02) and combined chronic disease (P=0.018).
Conclusion: Underweight and poor perceived health status were associated with the different combinations of independent factors of health care utilizations for the treatments of rhinitis. The results of this study could be used by health care professionals, health care providers, and public health institutions for providing more innovative and effective advice during the policy decision-making process for the use of different treatment strategies of health care utilizations among adult female patients with rhinitis.

Study of Relationship between Aroma of Plant Essential Oils and Smell Sensational Images in Aroma Therapy / 芳香療法植物精油香氣與嗅覺感性意象關聯性之研究Chieh-Jui Ghang, 張睿婕 January 2008 (has links)
碩士 / 樹德科技大學 / 應用設計研究所 / 96 / Following the social improvement and the booming development of technology, and although the National Income and the Standard of Living have risen, the pressure of the citizens in every industry is increasing everyday relatively and pressures are everywhere. For example, pressures are from works, school, family and human relationships. The long term over accumulated pressure had caused physical tiredness and deteriorating health of the people, if these problems could not be effectively resolved or adjusted, the physical and mental conditions of each individual may be in danger. Not only has it affected the working performance of an individual, the human relationships, atmosphere at home and the quality of living, moreover, it might lead to daggering lives. Therefore, the popularity of natural curing methods such as: relaxing, recreation and healthy living became today’s hottest industries. Among the curing methods, ‘aromatherapy’ became a kind of natural curing method of a spiritual nursing that the public have considered in this environment.
However, according to the current study of aromatherapy being held locally and abroad, they concentrate more on the essential oil composition and diseases as their medical discussion targets, and they didn’t widely investigate and research through the angle between the consumers and the aroma therapist, causing the knowledge of the consumers regarding the aroma feeling or its image, and the usage of essential oil by the aroma therapist to have a very different definition. Furthermore, due to the arrival of the [Consumer’s Sensibility Era], the psychological feeling of the consumers is not blinded anymore, but instead turned aggressively involve and understand. Therefore, how to relate the image of aroma through the consumers and turn to a special feature of essential oil to an aroma therapist became the important point of this research plan. There are four stages in the research flow and steps and they are compiling samples of essential oils and extracting aroma attributes, extracting smell sensation wording, establishing the relationship between aroma of essential oils and smell sensational images, and verifying the relationship between aroma of essential oils and the smell sensational images.
Research results show that (1) a table of natural plant essential oils and aroma elements is established, which contains (a) the type of oil aroma: flowers, citrus, exotic feels, vanilla, spices, resin, and wood essence; (b) the smell sensation: stimulating, relaxing, and sedative; (c) level of aroma: high, medium, low; (d) five elements of essential oils: a total of 4 items and 18 categories in classifications of gold, wood, water, fire, and earth; (2) the natural plant essential oil aroma classification and the sensational image principle are established to practically utilizing research results to help aroma therapy care personnel with emotional management; (3) from the sensational language and the corresponding aroma element obtained through the Type I quantification method, we can see the weight of each aroma element in different language pairs; (4) the sensational image granted by the tested aroma element of essential oils is objective to a certain degree after being evaluated through a questionnaire and verified by the statistical test; (5) from the 10 types in the back-propagation neural network training, we see that (a) the training judgment error in Type III is 0.70 while the test judgment error is 0.86. The total error rate is 0.65% on average (accuracy 99.35%); (b) the training judgment error in Type VII is 0.70 while the test judgment error is 0.86. The total error rate is 0.60% on average (accuracy 99.405%); (c) the training judgment error in Type IX is 0.70 while the test judgment error is 0.86. The total error rate is 0.66% on average (accuracy 99.34%). In the future, with results of the back-propagation neural network VII training to forecast new essential oil aroma and sensational language value, e.g. verifying the back-propagation neural network having passed the training with essential oils imported from overseas, aroma therapy care personnel or natural essential oil manufacturers do not have to go through the questionnaire any more and can get the sensational language value from the back-propagation neural network training results, which simplifies experiential judgment in giving care; and (6) the decision support system concept is brought forth for management to enhance and improve efficiency in the decision-making process. The decision support system established to support an aroma therapy regimen will screen among all preferences the patient has toward essential oils all knowledge required for mental disease decision making. The feedback from the decision support system enables an aroma therapist to clearly know which care essential oil suits the patient the best and greatly enhance the professionalism and utilization of aroma therapy in our country, contributing to the increase in the competitiveness of aroma therapy.

This research, as the starting point to the influence that people cause with the frequency of the music .And is acting the role who contains the person who regulates nerve by oneself in level that we know the frequency of the music ,Higher impact on people of frequency is comparatively alert ,and lower frequency will make people comparatively dispirited , relax . Just with the aromatherapy lavender and rosemary effect that causes to happen to agree completely.
This experiment adopting “Between-Subjects design”, select high-frequency music, relatively low frequency music for an independent variable, complement it with objective NeuroScan EEG , and carry out the performance index objectively : The compute test、figure memory test. In addition, adopt STAI questionnaire in subjective psychology, Among 20 man who are examined, found finally: (1) No matter more high-frequency music, than the low frequency music. STAI questionnaire one has higher anxious degree apparently (Z=-3.514,p<.05) (2) High-frequency music and Low- frequency music are in accuracy % of the memory of the figure, is good when being obvious than Baseline (Z=-3.032,p<.05) (3) In brain wave, only the low frequency music is stimulated small when Delta value of P3 position is obvious than Baseline.(Z=-2.896, p<.05) (4)No matter the comparatively anxious and comparatively relaxing music is stimulated, there is higher figure memory accuracy (5) Test in first time and the second figure memory, The apparent study effect appears at the speed of the question.(Z=-2.599,p<.05) (6) Baseline, first time and the second figure memory test one, The apparent study effect appears in the accuracy of the question.(Z=-2.803,p<.05)
Besides, industry namely emergence with consciousness, reduce a great key factor that the instrument cost becomes its flourishing industry. So an experiment detects the solution examined to the brain wave, Ask for technology company and offer EEG-2000R, Assess and seek Delta ,Theta ,Alpha ,Beta more economic quantity and examine the scheme to four kinds of brain waves. Result show EEG-2000R and NeuroScan EEG of technology company examine about Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta that brain produce, etc. at the brain wave form in quantity, Having 0.761 dependence equally, it is highest to have 0.952 dependence with Alpha wave among them.
