Management of Uncertainties in Publish/Subscribe SystemLiu, Haifeng 18 February 2010 (has links)
In the publish/subscribe paradigm, information providers disseminate publications to all consumers who have expressed interest by registering
subscriptions. This paradigm has found wide-spread applications, ranging from selective information dissemination to network management. However, all existing publish/subscribe systems cannot capture uncertainty inherent to the information in either subscriptions or publications.
In many situations the large number of data sources exhibit various kinds of uncertainties. Examples of imprecision include: exact knowledge to either specify subscriptions or publications is not available; the match between a subscription and a publication with uncertain data is
approximate; the constraints used to define a match is not only content based, but also take the semantic information into consideration. All these kinds of uncertainties have not received much attention in the context of publish/subscribe systems.
In this thesis, we propose new publish/subscribe models to express
uncertainties and semantics in publications and subscriptions, along with the matching semantics for each model. We also develop
efficient algorithms to perform filtering for our models so that it can be applied to process the rapidly increasing information on the Internet. A thorough experimental evaluation is presented to demonstrate that the proposed systems can offer scalability to large number of subscribers and high publishing rates.

Public Libraries as Publishers: Critical OpportunityConrad, Kathryn M. 01 May 2017 (has links)
Libraries have a long and distinguished history of publishing, since their earliest days. Traditionally libraries published to expose their collections through bibliographies, facsimiles, and catalogs. While the Internet has made discovery and dissemination of library holdings easier than ever before, digital publishing technologies have also unlocked compelling new purposes for library publishing, including through Open Access publishing initiatives. The self-publishing explosion and availability of self-publishing tools and services geared to libraries have heralded new opportunities for libraries, especially public libraries, to engage their communities in new ways. By supporting self-publishing initiative in their communities, public libraries can promote standards of quality in self-publishing, provide unique opportunities to engage underserved populations, and become true archives of their communities.

Understanding the publishing field : the contributions of BourdieuGulledge, Elizabeth Anne January 2011 (has links)
In this dissertation I call into question the way the concept of ‘field' is treated in neo institutional research by readdressing Pierre Bourdieu's elaboration of field. I discuss Bourdieu's framework which includes three concepts: field, capital and habitus. While Bourdieu's work has been widely incorporated into extant research, there have been few attempts to employ his concepts as a ‘theoretical triad' for empirical analysis. I explore how Bourdieu's approach enriches understandings of field through an analysis of book publishing with primary reference to Scotland. I contribute to the current literature on fields by examining book publishing as a social space, structured by the distribution of capital and moderated by habitus, that operates within the confines of internally defined boundaries. The dissertation illustrates how Bourdieu's elaboration of field addresses issues of struggle, power and micro dynamics that are underexplored within the field perspective of neo institutional theory. I argue that Bourdieu's framework of field, capital and habitus is useful because it brings simultaneous attention to processes of stability in social interaction and to conflict and difference.

Enhancing performance in publish/subscribe systemsUnknown Date (has links)
Publish/subscribe is a powerful paradigm for distributed applications based on decoupled clients of information. In pub/sub applications, there exist a large amount of publishers and subscribes ranging from hundreds to millions. Publish/subscribe systems need to disseminate numerous events through a network of brokers. Due to limited resources of brokers, there may be lots of events that cannot be handled in time which in turn causes overload problem. Here arises the need of admission control mechanism to provide guaranteed services in publish/subscribe systems. Our approach gives the solution to this overload problem in the network of brokers by limiting the incoming subscriptions by certain criteria. The criteria are the factors like resources which include bandwidth, CPU, memory (in broker network), resource requirements by the subscription. / by Akshay Kamdar. / Thesis (M.S.C.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.
