Psychological Bisexuality And Otherness In The Novels Of Angela Carter, Virginia Woolf, Marge Piercy And Ursula Le Guin: A Study From The Perspective Of Ecriture Feminine

Peksen Yanikoglu, Seda 01 April 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This study analyses The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin from the perspective of &eacute / criture f&eacute / minine. After a thorough discussion of the roots of &eacute / criture f&eacute / minine, the theory of the French feminists is put into practice in the analysis of the novels. The study asserts that the concepts of bisexuality, the other and the voice are common elements in novels of &eacute / criture f&eacute / minine, thereby the novelists mentioned in the study follow the propositions of H&eacute / l&egrave / ne Cixous, Julia Kristeva and Luc&eacute / Irigaray. The argument of the study is that the use of &eacute / criture f&eacute / minine as portrayed with reference to the novels, can be an efficient way in deconstructing the patriarchal system of language. Literature has a significant influence on social life, however women cannot make themselves heard using the language of patriarchy. Therefore an alternative such as &eacute / criture f&eacute / minine is essential. This study shows how this alternative can be practiced in various ways and it also creates the opportunity to consider the possibilities of alternative lives if this kind of thinking is widespread.

Rewriting Myths: Voicing Female Experience In Margaret Atwood&#039 / s Surfacing And The Penelopiad And Marina Warner&#039 / s Indigo And The Leto Bundle

Korkmaz, Fatma Tuba 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Myths have been an undeniable source in both shaping and expressing the values, norms and behavioural patterns in societies. However, the archetypes in these myths have helped to oppress women in their personal and social lives and have forced them to accept identities which actually are not theirs. Feminist archetypal theorists propose that through a detailed study of common images of women&rsquo / s writings, fantasies, dreams and myths, the archetypes that women possess will be uncovered and the female experience will have the chance to be voiced more accurately. The aim of this thesis is to explore Surfacing and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood and Indigo and The Leto Bundle by Marina Warner to lay bare the attempts of both writers to break away from the male-oriented myths so as to rewrite female experience via rewriting myths. In four novels, the archetypes and mythical elements are used in rewriting the gender and sexual identity markers which have long been imposed on women by patriarchal mythmakers. By rewriting these markers, both writers not only voice the genuine female experience and the body but also pave the way for the creation of new myths which would celebrate female identity and freedom.

Bergson

Tasdelen, Demet Kurtoslu 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to show how a possible philosophy of life can arise from Bergson&rsquo / s conception of time. In realizing this aim, I appeal to Hadot&rsquo / s description of the paradox of the human condition. I claim that in order to understand how a Bergsonian philosophy of life through Bergson&rsquo / s conception of time would arise we need to understand the paradox of the human condition. The reason for this is that there are a lot of dualities in Bergson&rsquo / s philosophy all of which, I claim, are based on this fundamental duality concerning the human condition. I believe that when this paradox and its possible resolution are restated in Bergsonian notions, a Bergsonian philosophy of life that consists of a life sub specie durationis, that is a life under the aspect of duration, would arise. Hadot considered the paradox within the context of phenomenology alone. This made me proceed by searching for other approaches to the paradox within Bergson&rsquo / s philosophy. I realized that the attempts in finding out possible solutions to this problem cannot be found in the context of phenomenology alone and that the vitalist and the existentialist aspects have to be considered in order to remain faithful to Bergson&rsquo / s philosophy as well as in order to construct a Bergsonian philosophy of life. The phenomenological aspect of the paradox arises around Bergson&rsquo / s notion of displacement of attention and when the notion of dur&eacute / e r&eacute / elle is considered with consciousness in the light of the notion of intensity. The vitalist aspect enters into our discussion when we analyze Bergson&rsquo / s notion of &eacute / lan vital around the consideration of true evolution. I believe that the existentialist aspect of the paradox of the human condition comes from Bergson&rsquo / s notion of freedom around the discussion of the superficial and the fundamental self. It emerges if the individual asks himself how to deal with this paradox that in turn defines his struggle to transform the tension the paradox involves and that tells him to bring his own attitude towards it.

Future Of Regulation Theory: Open-endedness And Post-disciplinarity

Karabiyikoglu, Mert 01 May 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Since the early 1970s, regulation theory have analysed the restructuring of capitalist economies in historical time. As early studies within that political economic research were againt the structural-functionalism explicit in Marxist theories of capitalism at the time on the one hand, and the closed theoretical system of neoclassical economics on the other, regulationists soon resorted to an open-method analysis of stylised facts. Such a method is none other than a middle-range theory. This study touches upon Boyer&rsquo / s and Jessop&rsquo / s arguments on the antithetical consequences of this middle-rangeness for further as well as former theoretical research within regulation theory and their particular scheme of infl&eacute / chissement for that political economic heuristic in institutionalist and integral economic terms.

Sexuality And Gender In Jeanette Winterson&#039 / s Two Novels: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit And Written On The Body

Yakut, Ozge 01 February 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to explore the categories of sexuality and gender through an analysis of Jeanette Winterson&rsquo / s well-known novels, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and Written on the body, against the background of Butler&rsquo / s concept of performativity and Cixous&rsquo / s &eacute / criture feminine. By underlining the constructedness of these categories and questioning the boundaries of patriarchal concepts and transgressing them, Winterson deconstructs the binary oppositions created by phallocentric discourse and problematizes the verdict that sexuality is inborn. Instead of this ingrained notion, she asserts that gender and sexual identities are culturally and discursively constructed by the dominant discourse. Although the dominant discourse favors heterosexuality over homosexuality and degrades sexuality into a binary frame of oppositions such as masculinity/ feminity and male/female, Winterson, in her novels, seeks an alternative to escape this ideological binarism and achieves to subvert the binary oppositions by highlighting the fluidity of sexuality and gender, and by creating amorphous characters like the ungendered narrator in Written on the body or by bestowing on them bisexuality or homosexuality as in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. Hence, the main argument of this thesis will be to display Winterson&rsquo / s deconstruction and dissolution of the patriarchal categories in her novels and to emphasize her escape from the binary charade, in a fictional universe, with references to Butlerian performativity and Cixousian &eacute / criture feminine.

Genesis Of The Karaali (ankara, Turkey) Fe-cu Sulfide Mineralization

Imer, Ali 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
With the closure of Neo-Tethys in the Early Tertiary, oceanic crustal material was accreted along the izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture Zone. The Ankara m&eacute / lange developed within this suture zone and contains Cretaceous ophiolitic fragments, some of which host significant Fe-Cu sulfide mineralization. Such mineralization is observed as massive to disseminated pyrite-chalcopyrite hosted by pillow to massive basalts in a dismembered and tectonically imbricated ophiolite block near Karaali, Ankara. Basaltic host rocks lack most of their primary mineral assemblages and textural relationships. As a consequence of greenschist-facies metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, the basalts were strongly albitized and propylitized prior to late-stage argillic alteration, which is proximal to the main mineralized zone. Sulfide mineralization occurs in a massive sulfide lens and laterally extensive, 10-meter-thick zone of anastomosing quartz-sulfide veins. Other than pyrite and chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite and sphalerite also occur as minor sulfide phases, and the source of sulfur is determined to have been magmatic on the basis of 34S isotope analyses. A series of geochemical analyses suggest that the basaltic host rocks formed within a subduction-related tectonic setting, and the mineralization is thought to have formed during a medium-temperature hydrothermal event which was followed by another later period of low-temperature hydrothermal activity. Field, petrographical and geochemical evidence show that the Karaali Fe-Cu mineralization is genetically correlative with the Cyprus and K&uuml / re massive sulfide deposits, and may be classified as a Cyprus-type massive sulfide deposit.

迂迴,延宕與延異:《明信片》的書信特質 / Detour, Deferral, and Différance: Epistolarity in The Post Card

黃惠瑜, Huang , Hui-yu Unknown Date (has links)
In Jacques Derrida’s The Post Card: From Socrates to Freud and Beyond (1987), the part of “Envois” is composed of many exchanged post cards. This collection of post cards reminds us of the letters compiled in epistolary novels. There is a lot of prestige attached to many seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English and French epistolary novels, such as Gabriel de Guilleragues’ The Portuguese Letters (1669), Samuel Richardson’s Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1747-1748), Françoise de Graffigny’s Letters from a Peruvian Woman (1747), Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse (1761), and Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782). These epistolary novels constitute the main frame of the epistolary genre. Then, confronted with the epistolary predecessors, what prompts Derrida to write the epistolary text of “Envois” in the twentieth century, in which the telecommunications networks appear to overpower the importance of writing letters or post cards? What is the difference between “Envois” and the previous epistolary novels? On this issue, I want to argue in my thesis that Derrida’s “Envois” is intended to deconstruct the epistolary genre by paradoxically valorizing and substituting the postal effects of the post card for the generic identities of epistolary novels. The postal effects of the post card primarily invoke the impossibility of the predestined destination and intended receiver. The post card always implies the possibilities of interception and multiple receivers in the process of transmission. In this way, the post card disrupts the linear path confined in the hierarchical opposites between the original departure point and the final destination. This disruption facilitates Derrida’s attempt to deconstruct the construction of knowledge in the Western intellectual genealogy. The postal effects are applied to destabilize the linear succession of intellectual inheritance originated since Socrates. The inheritance is transmitted by multiple readers and hence susceptible to a myriad of interpretations. The binary logic between the original and the derivative, the present and the absent, and the public and the private is undermined in the multiplicity. The form of the post card, which is “half-private half public” (Post Card 62), oscillates in the indeterminacy of multiplicity. The postal effects of indeterminacy aroused in the post card are what Derrida emphasizes in “Envois.” As a result, even in the age replete with the telecommunications networks, Derrida still proposes the possibility of “the unlimited empire of a postcardization” (104). The postcardization does not mean to precipitate the “decadence” (104) of epistolary writing, but it aims to disseminate and recurrently stimulate the possibility of difference. In my thesis, I propose three perspectives to illuminate the epistolarity of the post card: detour, deferral, and différance. They are interwoven in my discussion of Derrida’s “Envois.” In chapter one “Epistolary Genre: Valorization and Substitution,” I propound a paradox that “Envois” simultaneously valorizes and substitutes for the epistolary genre. “Envois” therefore puts the epistolary genre in a detour of difference and defers its determination of identity. In chapter two “Epistolary Otherness: The Object of Desire,” I apply Jacques Lacan’s concept of the object of desire to elucidate the self-construction in the act of writing post cards. The sender’s self-identity is continually deferred in a detour, because s/he requires the absent receiver to evoke his/her difference. In chapter three “Epistolary Writing: Paradox of the Supplement,” I relate Derrida’s concept of the supplement to the paradoxical effects of addition and substitution in epistolary writing. Writing post cards adds to a compensation of the distance, but it also simultaneously substitutes the distance for the final encounter with the absent receiver. In chapter four “Epistolary Exchange: Play of the Fort Da,” I compare Sigmund Freud’s, Lacan’s, and Derrida’s different observations on the fort da game. The fort da movements of epistolary exchanges are interminably deferred in a detour, when multiple readers in the process of transmission are taken into consideration. The multiple readers replenish possibilities of differences with a variety of interpretations. In chapter five “Epistolary Inheritance: Post Card of Intellectual Legacy,” I explore Derrida’s speculations on the scene of reversal copied on the post cards collected in “Envois.” The scene of reversal between Socrates and Plato is speculated to imply possible detours away from the linear succession of genealogy. Different representations of knowledge persistently defer the final determinate meaning of the intellectual inheritance.

Dualities In Bergson Revisited: Towards A Reconciliation?

Karahan, Gulizar 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to make an inquiry on the nature and the development of dualities in Bergson&rsquo / s philosophy. Since the nature of each duality differs from the others and the dualistic pattern inherent in Bergsonian philosophy is subject to change, we base our study on a chronological structure in order to comprehend better how this pattern changes. We claim that such an inquiry will yield relevant outcomes with regard to ontological and epistemological evolution of Bergson&rsquo / s thought. To state more precisely, we are of the idea that the modification in the dualistic pattern in Bergson&rsquo / s ontology is reflected in a parallel manner in his epistemology. The fundamental question that shows us the way to follow in our study is whether the elements of the dualities (whether they be ontological or epistemological) are reconciled by Bergson or they are left as absolutely distinct elements. At the end of the inquiry regarding that question, which we believe can be taken as an inspiring point in developing new approaches especially to epistemological problems, our conviction is that Bergson points out to a meeting point.

Web As A System Of Architectural Organization: Frankfurt-romerberg Competition Project

Beseli, Heves 01 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to reveal the potentials of &ldquo / Web&rdquo / as a system of achitectural organization. This concept developed by Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic, and Shadrach Woods can be seen as a product of the discourse arose in 1960s, which concieves the city as a continuous and dynamic structure rather than a static entity composed of individual buildings. In this sense, Web appears as a system of architectural organization that responds to this dynamism by enabling growth and change. In this thesis, Frankfurt-R&ouml / merberg Competition Project by Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) is analyzed to understand the potential of Web in organizing both physical and social relations. Revealing the potentials of Web requires examination of other concepts introduced by Candilis-Josic-Woods. Therefore, the relationship between Web and its sources (casbah and bidonville) and precedents (habitat &eacute / volutif and Stem) will be constructed. In order to construct this relation and to understand how Web operates as a system of architectural organization, the components and design acts of Web as well as its potentials will be analyzed in the case of Frankfurt-R&ouml / merberg Project. In doing so, the project will be seen as the main prototype of Web. The thesis will also put emphasis on habitat &eacute / volutif as the main idea behind Web. It will be argued that habitat &eacute / volutif evolved into Web with the help of stem as a connecting element.

Estudo da degradação do dietil ftalato por processo eletroquímico com ânodo dimensionalmente estável em sistemas aquosos / Study of the degradation of diethyl phthalate by electrochemical process with anode dimensionally stable in aqueous systems

Medina, Ana Maria Barbosa 25 April 2016 (has links)
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are compounds produced in large amounts industrially widely used as plasticizers. Their waste are leached by water becoming persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the aqueous environment, besides having endocrine disrupting characteristics. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is frequently found in environmental samples, it has high solubility in water and can be generated during the degradation of other PAEs. This work studied the degradation of diethyl phthalate in aqueous media by electrochemical method using a commercial dimensionally stable anode (ADE) represented as Ti/Ru0,3Ti0,7O2 in a filter-press flow cell. The electrolysis were carried out during 120 minutes containing an initial concentration of 100.3 mg L-1 DEP, initial pH = 3, temperature at 25 °C and flow rate of 250 ml min-1. The experiments were performed using factorial design 32 with two replicas at the midpoint, with as independent variables the current density (10, 25 and 40 mA cm-2) and the logarithm base 10 of the ionic strength of the electrolyte, NaCl and Na2SO4 (µ = 0.05, 0.15 and 0.5 mol L-1), in order to study the effect of current density, concentration and nature of the electrolyte to determine the best diethyl phthalate degradation condition. The monitoring of DEP concentration was made by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the mineralization was accompanied by total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. They obtained higher percentages of removal and mineralization with the use of higher current densities and in the presence of high concentrations of NaCl in comparison with Na2SO4. Thus, there was obtained the removal of 63.2 % and 63.9 % mineralization in 0.5 mol L-1 NaCl and current density of 40 mA cm-2, whereas for Na2SO4 (µ = 0.5 mol L-1) and 40 mA cm-2 was removed 51.3 % and 53.0% mineralized DEP. The DEP degradation mechanism was determined in NaCl and Na2SO4, by HPLC-MS under the conditions mentioned above, identifying the molecular ion of m/z 149 and 177 on both electrolytes, corresponding to protonated phthalic anhydride and an adduct of phthalic anhydride with C(2)H(5)(+), respectively, characteristic ions of DEP fragmentation, besides the ion m/z 239 over Na2SO4 corresponding to diethyl 3-hydroxyphthalate. The DEP degradation takes place through the aliphatic chain.
