Detour, Deferral, and Différance: Epistolarity in The Post Card

Huang , Hui-yu Unknown Date (has links)
In Jacques Derrida’s The Post Card: From Socrates to Freud and Beyond (1987), the part of “Envois” is composed of many exchanged post cards. This collection of post cards reminds us of the letters compiled in epistolary novels. There is a lot of prestige attached to many seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English and French epistolary novels, such as Gabriel de Guilleragues’ The Portuguese Letters (1669), Samuel Richardson’s Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1747-1748), Françoise de Graffigny’s Letters from a Peruvian Woman (1747), Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse (1761), and Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782). These epistolary novels constitute the main frame of the epistolary genre. Then, confronted with the epistolary predecessors, what prompts Derrida to write the epistolary text of “Envois” in the twentieth century, in which the telecommunications networks appear to overpower the importance of writing letters or post cards? What is the difference between “Envois” and the previous epistolary novels? On this issue, I want to argue in my thesis that Derrida’s “Envois” is intended to deconstruct the epistolary genre by paradoxically valorizing and substituting the postal effects of the post card for the generic identities of epistolary novels. The postal effects of the post card primarily invoke the impossibility of the predestined destination and intended receiver. The post card always implies the possibilities of interception and multiple receivers in the process of transmission. In this way, the post card disrupts the linear path confined in the hierarchical opposites between the original departure point and the final destination. This disruption facilitates Derrida’s attempt to deconstruct the construction of knowledge in the Western intellectual genealogy. The postal effects are applied to destabilize the linear succession of intellectual inheritance originated since Socrates. The inheritance is transmitted by multiple readers and hence susceptible to a myriad of interpretations. The binary logic between the original and the derivative, the present and the absent, and the public and the private is undermined in the multiplicity. The form of the post card, which is “half-private half public” (Post Card 62), oscillates in the indeterminacy of multiplicity. The postal effects of indeterminacy aroused in the post card are what Derrida emphasizes in “Envois.” As a result, even in the age replete with the telecommunications networks, Derrida still proposes the possibility of “the unlimited empire of a postcardization” (104). The postcardization does not mean to precipitate the “decadence” (104) of epistolary writing, but it aims to disseminate and recurrently stimulate the possibility of difference. In my thesis, I propose three perspectives to illuminate the epistolarity of the post card: detour, deferral, and différance. They are interwoven in my discussion of Derrida’s “Envois.” In chapter one “Epistolary Genre: Valorization and Substitution,” I propound a paradox that “Envois” simultaneously valorizes and substitutes for the epistolary genre. “Envois” therefore puts the epistolary genre in a detour of difference and defers its determination of identity. In chapter two “Epistolary Otherness: The Object of Desire,” I apply Jacques Lacan’s concept of the object of desire to elucidate the self-construction in the act of writing post cards. The sender’s self-identity is continually deferred in a detour, because s/he requires the absent receiver to evoke his/her difference. In chapter three “Epistolary Writing: Paradox of the Supplement,” I relate Derrida’s concept of the supplement to the paradoxical effects of addition and substitution in epistolary writing. Writing post cards adds to a compensation of the distance, but it also simultaneously substitutes the distance for the final encounter with the absent receiver. In chapter four “Epistolary Exchange: Play of the Fort Da,” I compare Sigmund Freud’s, Lacan’s, and Derrida’s different observations on the fort da game. The fort da movements of epistolary exchanges are interminably deferred in a detour, when multiple readers in the process of transmission are taken into consideration. The multiple readers replenish possibilities of differences with a variety of interpretations. In chapter five “Epistolary Inheritance: Post Card of Intellectual Legacy,” I explore Derrida’s speculations on the scene of reversal copied on the post cards collected in “Envois.” The scene of reversal between Socrates and Plato is speculated to imply possible detours away from the linear succession of genealogy. Different representations of knowledge persistently defer the final determinate meaning of the intellectual inheritance.

The epigram and the letter from Ausonius to Ennodius of Pavia : a stylistic, literary and historical study of a generic contiguity in Late Antiquity

Bonnan-Garçon, Camille 16 November 2018 (has links)
From Ausonius to Ennodius of Pavia, including Paulinus of Nola, Symmachus and Sidonius Apollinaris, many men of letters, in late Antiquity, wrote both letters and epigrams. Besides, Ennodius himself has organized his complete work alternating epigrams and letters, and highliting the close connection between those two genres. However, despite theirs numerous common features, the critics did not bother to draw a parrallel between them. Thus, we want to devote ourselves to this original point of view. First of all, we study the stylistic aspect of this generic connection, through two main common criteria. One the one hand, the breuitas and the humilitas, and in the other hand, the predominance of a certain form of mannerism. Then, considering the social and communicational aspects of those genres, we bring them together as medias adopting a common communicationnal system, and using the same places of creation. Finally, we include our reflexion in a broader one, about the phenomenon of genre-switching in Late Antiquity. This final movement consists in a studic of hybrid forms, in an ecdotic, stylistic point of view, but also in the study of latin-grec bilingualism.

Correspondances avec l'absence : la fiction épistolaire monologique aux XXe et XXIe siècles / Monologic epistolary fiction of the 20th and 21st centuries

Doig, Katherine 06 December 2017 (has links)
Long fictions composed of one uninterrupted letter – monologic epistolary fictions – are underrepresented in critical discourse, and frequently shunted more or less overtly beyond its margins. Their existence is brought to light here by one play and fourteen novels in French, English, Italian and German, ranging from 1902 (Gide) to 2011 (Norman) via a cast of authors including Yourcenar, Coetzee, Amis and Celestini. This study aims firstly to fill the critical lacuna, establishing the dimensions of this new sub- genre. It measures the breadth of the formal definitions of the single-letter epistolary novel, the length of its inscription in literary history, and the depth conferred upon it by critical discourse about real letters, the letter-novel genre and a certain epistolary quality to be found in all literature, which our novels set themselves up to reflect and refract. Our rather disparate corpus of texts reveals the interest of this technical framework, haunted as it is by recurrent themes which illuminate the characteristics of monological epistolary writing. Firstly, the theme of one's own death (Yourcenar, Coetzee, Bernstein, Robinson, Amis) shines a light on the physical structure of any text, rendered visible in the format of the letter; this conjunction suggests the idea of the text as corpse. A series of apocalyptic universes complicates this rather empirical portrait, which reads like the symbol of the Death of the Author; novels by Coetzee, Amis and Auster use complex portraits of fictional time to suggest the possibility of coincidence, overlap, meetings both epistolary and literary. These two chapters set up the terms of a final debate concerning literary communication, investigated via the symbol of the double (Gide, Coeztee, Bernstein, Celestini). After the narrative of the text itself and the implied drama of the letter's trajectory, a pragmatic dimension comes to light. This final analysis allows us to investigate the ethics of correspondence, and the letter as one key to understanding those of fiction itself.

The readings of the Portuguese literary canon that are guided by gynocritical methodologies of female works retrieval put New Portuguese letters as a literary milestone for the writers who start writing after 1972, paving the way for canon revisionist projects focused on gender category. Taking as its starting point the seventeenth-century letters of Mariana Alcoforado, the three Marias use a genre of autobiographical domain associated with the feminine expression to promote a dialogue with the society of the time. Sharing the credits for this collaborative work, they deliberately do not sign each text. Through these formal procedures, New Portuguese Letters implode categories of authorship and authority of the texts.

For this, we analyze how discourses conveyed by letters, as well as the writings on drought by José do Patrocínio, romance and letters published in serials column, pedestal newspaper sometimes determines or modifies genres and even more ways to read, which are decisive for the construction of meaning and interpretation of the reading at any time, from the rhetorical arguments used by readers - writers of these letters, with the intention of establishing the readership with broad receptivity, sensitivity and representation on that backcountry area. We have reflected, analytically, with authors such as Chartier (1991, 1998, 2002, 2007), M. Barbosa (2004, 2010); S. Barbosa (2007, 2010a, 2010b , 2011; 2011a, 2011b), Barthes (1974, 1985) , Freire (1823), Roquette (1860, 1997), among others, who have helped us understand how the heterogeneity of the images raised by these objects merged and created, finally, the dominant discourse of the drought that would be established for the northern region of Brazil. Le De gratia noui Testamenti, synthèse de la doctrine augustinienne de la grâce / The De gratia noui Testamenti, synthesis of Augustine’s doctrine of grace

Descotes, Pierre 03 December 2012 (has links)
The De gratia noui Testamenti (= epistula 140), which is both a treatise and a letter composed by the Bishop of Hippo Regius at the beginning of year 412, presents Augustine’s thoughts on the connections between divine grace and human freedom in a remarkably synthetic way, first because of the circumstances in which it was written, which place it at the junction of very different debates, and secondly because of its originality on a literary point of view, which links it to several genres. This thesis comprises three parts. First, we propose an introduction to the treatise, which presents its main aspects – among which, the historical problems it poses, the literary questions it raises and the insight it offers into Augustine’s way of thinking. Then we have established the edition (which corrects that of the CSEL, which dates from the beginning of the 20th century) and the translation from a study of its manuscript tradition. Finally, our commentary strives to enlighten the debatable passages of the epistle in order to highlight its main historical, literary and philosophical interests.

L’École des lettres. Correspondances amicales entre jeunes artistes : Alain-Fournier, Jacques Rivière, André Lhote (1904-1914) / An epistolary art school. Friendship correspondences between young artists : Alain-Fournier, Jacques Rivière, André Lhote (1904-1914)

Carré, Juliette 28 March 2014 (has links)
Alain-Fournier and Jacques Rivière exchanged many letters from 1904 to 1914. Painter André Lhote joined them in 1907. This thesis postulates that their correspondences, because they were written out of friendship, played a part in their education as future artists. The context of the encounter between the three youngsters is determined by what Jean-François Sirinelli calls « sociability structures » : the first one is the Rhétorique Supérieure class in Lakanal, where Rivière and Fournier meet, the second one is Gabriel Frizeau’s salon in Bordeaux, where Rivière meets Lhote. Exploring literature and culture, reading and seeing a part of what their time had to offer, gives solid foundations to their friendship, and leads to the extension of their sociability network. This being laid out, one can define the features of the letter writers’ friendship. It obeys the criteria of perfect friendship as it was described by tradition : friends are equals and their relationship is based on trading and sharing. But the three young men are also friends because they have a common passion for arts. Their friendly pact thus influences their epistolary pact : a friendship letter, being defined by its variety, allows writers to criticize each other’s work, to give theoretical exposés and to practice creative writing. That is why these correspondences can be called a school for artists : there, the three young men can build their own identities which allow them to find their place into the artistic field. They also form vitalist aesthetic principles and their own writing styles. Letters thus appear as a laboratory where they can try to write novels, essays or art critic.
