Making The Secular Through The Body: Tattooing The Father TurkErim, Bilun 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines the recent phenomenon of Atatü / rk&rsquo / s tattoos through a twofold theoretical framework of body politics and secularism. Firstly, it examines the growing interest on the body in social sciences, which has focused on the body as a site of both docility and subversivity. Additionally, the body has been rediscovered as a fetish object through which selfhood and subjectivity are continually reconstructed and contested. These developments were simultaneously conditioned by and manifested themselves in an understanding of &lsquo / the body as a project&rsquo / . Secondly, the study explores Atatü / rk&rsquo / s continued legacy in Turkish politics and for the nation-people. 73 years after his death, Atatü / rk still remains the utmost personification of the secular Turkish nation state. An effort is made to demonstrate how &lsquo / the secular&rsquo / , representing the normative nation-identity, and &lsquo / the religious&rsquo / , representing its Other, have been made in Turkish history. In light of these theories, Atatü / rk tattoo almost seems like an oxymoron: &lsquo / tattoo&rsquo / carrying controversial and rebellious, and &lsquo / Atatü / rk&rsquo / statist and conformist undertones. The main ambition of this thesis is to explore this contradiction through an analysis of whether the Atatü / rk tattoo is a spontaneous (body) politics on the side of &lsquo / the people&rsquo / or whether it is a symptom of Kemalism&rsquo / s current position in society and politics. Finally, to better understand the subject, field research has been conducted with tattoo artists and people with the Atatü / rk tattoo, in 3 cities, through the summer and fall of 2010.

Geoarchaeological Investigations Around Kultepe (kayseri)Omeroglu, Isil 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of geology on ancient Kü / ltepe settlement located in a tectonically active area, namely Sarimsakli basin, shaped by Central Anatolian Fault Zone.
Four main data sources used in this study are geological map, digital elevation model (DEM), slip plane and the borehole data. Geological maps are used for the determination of key horizons and the faults shaping the basin. Slip data measured in the field are used to identify the nature of the faults. Borehole data are used for the preparation of Quaternary thickness map and the borehole-to-borehole sections across the basin. Morphology of the area is investigated using the DEM with a particular emphasis on the drainage characteristics of the basin.
The analyses have shown that the faults shaping the basin are still active suggesting vertical movements today as well as during the historical period. According to morphological analysis, the basin is drained by a single channel (Karasu river) which is controlled by the western segment of the fault zone. If the fault activates, the channel is elevated resulting in the formation of a lake behind the channel. Accordingly, the present morphological configuration suggests that a water level elevated for 70 m will totally bury Kü / ltepe.

Assessing Standard-compliance Of Public Institution Web Sites Of TurkeyYalcinkaya, Sinem 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Since 2003, almost every public institution has developed a web site through etransformation project (eDTr) in Turkey. When there are so many institutions and different web sites, a need for standard becomes inevitable. To address this need, a standard was published by TÜ / RKSAT A.S. in January 2009 which constitutes of the rules and recommendations for these web sites referencing international web standards as well.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the compatibility of public institutions&rsquo / web sites in Turkey with the TÜ / RKSAT standard. In this study, 32 rules are selected to be verified for 50 public institution web sites. 20 of the rules are verified with a tool named WSSCV which is developed in the context of this thesis, 5 of the rules are verified with a commercial tool named Total Validator, and 7 of the rules are verified manually.
Results show that, the standard prepared by TÜ / RKSAT is not used during the development of a public institution web application. Compliance of the checked web sites to the standard is very low. However, the standard also needs to be updated according to today&rsquo / s technology.

Sociospatial Impacts Of Deindustrialization: The Case Of KarabukCevik, Murat 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the socio-spatial impacts of the restructuring of a locality, Karabü / k, which was shaped under a different development strategy, namely, import substitution industrialization strategy.
Karabü / k case shows that establishment of Karabü / k Iron and Steal Factories was decided on the basis of political and social priorities of a period when there was limited competitive environment and such priorities have lost their primacy
under the export oriented growth strategy in a highly competitive international environment.
The recent experience shows that Karabü / k fails to cope with this reality and the industrial base of the locality ever increasingly fails to support the economy of the city. The thesis is also an attempt to show the socio-spatial repercussions of this failure on the locality.
It will be shown that, closing down the Factories would have important negative impacts upon the whole city, rather moderate policies have been followed by various governments during the recent decades by partly placing the burden on
the workers themselves.
In the long term, however, survival of the factory seems to be difficult, if not impossible. Therefore, the future for the city itself looks quite bleak.

January 2004, 130 pages
This study explores the effectiveness of NGOs within the policy process and
governments&rsquo / decisions based on the case of TÜ / SiAD&rsquo / s activities with regard
to Turkey&rsquo / s full membership process in the European Union. It firstly explains
the process by which NGOs&rsquo / have become &ldquo / actors&rdquo / in world politics. The
thesis, then, scrutinizes the role of NGOs in the policy process with regard to
pluralist and corporatist paradigms and the concept of power since policy
process can not be well understood without this theoretical background. After
examining the roles of NGOs, especially the lobbying one, the importance of
NGOs and strength of civil society for Turkey&rsquo / s integration to the European

Reproduction Of Patriarchy Through Religious Broadcasting: A Study On Samanyolu Tv / The Case OfCinoglu, Doruk 01 August 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to understand how one of the strongest Islamist movements in Turkey, the Gü / len Movement, approaches to the question of woman and disseminates it to the society through religious broadcasting. To realize this aim, the content of the movement&rsquo / s television channel, STV&rsquo / s program, Bosanmak Istemiyorum (I do not want to divorce) in which family, marriage and gender relations are the main discussion points is analyzed. Besides the assessment of the way in which gender relations are handled and family and gender norms are represented in the program, it also tries to provide discussions on the gender discourse of the movement and the related practices of the movement.

Genetic Structure Analysis Of Honeybee Populations Based On MicrosatellitesBodur, Cagri 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
We analyzed the genetic structures of 11 honeybee (Apis mellifera) populations from
Tü / rkiye and one population from Cyprus using 9 microsatellite loci. Average gene
diversity levels were found to change between 0,542 and 0,681. Heterozygosity levels,
mean number of alleles per population, presence of diagnostic alleles and pairwise FST
values confirmed the mitochondrial DNA finding that Anatolian honeybees belong to north
Mediterranean (C) lineage. We detected a very high level of genetic divergence among
populations of Tü / rkiye and Cyprus based on pairwise FST levels (between 0,0 and 0,2). Out
of 66 population pairs 52 were found to be genetically different significantly. This level of
significant differentiation has not been reported yet in any other study conducted on
European and African honeybee populations. High allelic ranges, and high divergence
indicate that Anatolia is a genetic centre for C lineage honeybees.
We suggest that certain precautions should be taken to limit or forbid introduction and trade
of Italian and Carniolan honeybees to Tü / rkiye and Cyprus in order to preserve genetic
resources formed in these territories in thousands of years. Effectivity at previously isolated
regions in Artvin, Ardahan and Kirklareli was confirmed by the high genetic differentiation
in honeybees of these regions. Genetically differentiated Karaburun and Cyprus honeybees
v
and geographical positions of the regions make these zones first candidates as new isolation
areas.

A Continuum Model For Decoherence In 1d TransportSenozan, Selma 01 August 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis we study the conductance of a one dimensional conductor in the presence of dephasing. Dephasing effects are modelled after generalizing Bü / ttiker&rsquo / s dephasing
model (Phys. Rev. B 33, 3020 (1986)) to a continuous one. Infinitely many electron reservoirs are coupled to the conductor as phase breakers and the method for calculating the conductance is presented. We investigate how this continuum decoherence effect the conductance of a wire, with single and double rectangular barriers.

Defining General Conservation Principles For Primary Schools Of Rum Minority In IstanbulEkmekci, Onur Tunc 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, it is aimed to make a study on Primary Schools of Rum Minority in Istanbul, and in light of this study, to define general principles for conservation studies on these schools. Rum Minority had an important part in social and cultural life in Istanbul and in late 19th Century, their impact in the city increased with their financial power, especially in Beyoglu. Increase in number of schools they built also occurred in the same timeline. Schools built in and after this term by Rum Minority were built as important public buildings of a minority group and possess strong authenticity, technical-artistic, socio-cultural and economical values. In order to decide which values, problems and potentials these buildings bear, a site survey study is done for this thesis.
Primary Schools of Rum Minority in Istanbul are among strongest solid evidences of cultural diversity in Istanbul, and Turkey. While conserving these cultural assets, considering all their values, problems, and potentialities is vital. In addition to conservation studies, interpretation and presentation are also necessary steps for reintegration of these buildings to the city. This thesis performs as an effort made to document features and current state of these schools, decide their value, problems, and potentials / and defining general conservation principles for them.
