Short-term biomass production of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and its inheritanceKongkiatngam, Prasert January 1991 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the short-term (one-year) biomass production in red clover and to obtain an estimate of the heritability of this characteristic. Progenies from parents with high biomass had higher biomass than those from parents with low biomass or having one parent in each category. The narrow-sense heritability estimated from mid-parent offspring regression was 0.23, from parent-offspring correlation was 0.22, and realized heritability was 0.15, indicating that progeny testing would be required for successful selection of populations with greater biomass production. Plants selected for high biomass production tended to have higher shoot:root ratios and flower more profusely than the parental checks and the low biomass plants. This indicates that by selecting for high biomass, red clover will be selected for more annual growth habit at the same time.

The Red Lake greenstone belt is considered to be one of Canada’s premier gold producing regions with the Red Lake Gold Mines having produced >24 million ounces of gold to date. The East Bay Trend is a large structural corridor that parallels the East Bay of Red Lake, Ontario and is interpreted to be a manifestation of the regional D1 structure that crosscuts this complexly folded greenstone belt. The southernmost 8 km of this corridor is host to a variety of small gold deposits that demonstrate an assortment of mineralization styles. This study aims to: (1) better define veining styles and characterize the mineralizing fluids using petrography, fluid inclusions, geochronology and stable isotopes, (2) compare barren and auriferous veins from deposits along the East Bay Trend, and (3) compare the fluid history of the East Bay Trend to the Campbell-Red Lake gold deposit to determine the gold potential along this trend.

Factors affecting isoflavone concentration in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)Sivesind, Evan January 2005 (has links)
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) contains isoflavones, which are of interest because of their benefits for human health as well as their adverse effects on the fertility of farm animals. Isoflavone concentration in 10 cultivars ranged from 8923 to 12753 mug g-1 DM averaged across sites, harvests, and years. One cultivar, 'Start', distinguished itself with particularly low isoflavone levels. Concentrations varied according to plant part with leaves having the highest levels followed by stems and inflorescences, when averaged across maturity levels and cultivars (11970, 4896 and 3297 mug g-1 DM, respectively). Greatest content was found in leaves and stems during vegetative stages. Fresh herbage contained higher isoflavone content than either silage or hay (14464, 12200 and 11604 mug g-1 DM, respectively). Foliar application of yeast extract, chitosan, and acetic acid elicitors overall showed modest (12-15%) increases in isoflavone concentration over untreated control plants. Differences were not observed between elicitor concentrations used.

The Red River Resistance of 1869-1870: The Machiavellian Moment of the Métis of ManitobaO'Toole, Darren 13 December 2010 (has links)
In October 1869, the fledgling Canadian federation was preparing for the transfer of Rupert's Land and the Northwestern Territory when the Métis set up a Provisional Government in order to resist what they saw as a unilateral annexation of their homeland. Although there were multiple references made to 'republicanism' during the Resistance, no scholar has ever explored whether republican conventions were actually present in political discourse in the District of Assiniboia prior to the Resistance and whether they were effectively activated during the Resistance. Working from the Cambridge School approach of discourse analysis, this thesis first identifies the conventions of democratic rhetorical republicanism, which includes positive and negative liberty, the rule of law, the mixed and balanced constitution and citizenship, which in turn involves virtue, the militia and real property. It then looks at the gradual introduction in Assiniboia of republican discourse from multiple
sources, including the United States, Lower Canada, Upper Canada, Ireland, France and Great Britain and its circulation throughout several practical political struggles during the period from 1835 to 1869. In doing so, it shows that certain 'organic intellectuals' acted as 'transmission belts' of republican conventions and that institutional structures were a factor that rendered the activation of such conventions almost inevitable. By the time the Resistance took place in 1869, a more or less fully developed republican paradigm formed part of the linguistic matrix and was available to political actors in Assiniboia. Finally, the thesis shows that republican discourse was effectively mobilised by identifying fragments of republican conventions that were harnessed in various speechacts during the Resistance. It is argued that republican language was fundamental to the success of the ideological and political manoeuvres of the leaders of the Resistance as it was particularly effective both as an instrument of anti-colonialism and as a pragmatic ideal of self-government that sought to correct the iniquities of colonial government.

The impacts of disturbance were explored for red deer (<i>Cervus elaphus</i>) in the Scottish Highlands, by studying the distribution, behaviour and diet composition of deer in areas that were disturbed or less disturbed by human recreation, in different habitat types (grassland, heather moorland and woodland) and at different times of year. The human-caused predation risk hypothesis states that there are similarities between the responses elicited by wild animals towards human recreational disturbance and predation. This hypothesis was tested by comparing behaviour during the recreation season (spring and summer) and the hunting season (autumn and winter). Deer densities were lower in disturbed areas than less disturbed areas throughout the year, although there was no difference in relative habitat use as a result of disturbance. Habitat selection was primarily influenced by season, with grasslands having higher deer densities during the spring and summer and heather moorlands having higher densities during the winter. Behaviour was monitored using scan sampling of groups. The percentage of animals that were vigilant was higher, resulting in a smaller number of deer feeding in disturbed than less disturbed areas during the recreational season. Vigilance was higher in disturbed grassland and heather moorland than undisturbed woodland, while behaviour was similar in disturbed woodland and the less disturbed habitats. In disturbed heather and woodland and in all less disturbed habitats, the majority of animals were standing while vigilant, whilst in disturbed grassland, lying was the main mode of vigilance. Deer were more likely to be close together when vigilance levels were high.

A radio study of the high-redshift galaxy cluster field RCS J022434-0002.5 /D'Alfonso, Nadia. January 2008 (has links)
We present the 1.4-GHz catalog of the galaxy cluster field RCS J022434-0002.5, at a redshift of z = 0.773. A total of 194 sources were found within a ∼0.28 degree2 region to a 5sigma depth of ∼75 muJy. We show that the differential source counts for the cluster field are in good agreement with other radio surveys, and therefore do not indicate a strong excess of radio sources in the cluster compared to the field. We find 13 sources have optical counterparts with photometric redshifts within 1sigma of the cluster redshift and an additional 5 within 2sigma, and we consider these objects to be candidate cluster members. We use their radio luminosities to attempt to diagnose the presence of active galactic nuclei or star formation activity. We find that the cluster candidates are statistically more likely to be powered by active galactic nuclei, rather than star formation.
