Packet Data Flow Control in Evolved WCDMA Networks / Flödeskontroll av Paketdata i Vidareutvecklade WCDMA Nätverk

Bergström, Andreas January 2005 (has links)

The key idea of the new, shared high-capacity channel HSDPA, is to adapt the transmission rate to fast variations in the current radio conditions, thus enabling download peak data rates much higher than what WCDMA can offer today. This has induced a need for data that traverses the mobile network to be intermediately buffered in the Radio Base Station, RBS. A scheduling algorithm then basically selects the user with the most beneficial instantaneous radio conditions for access to the high-speed channel and transmission of its data over the air interface.

The purpose of this thesis is to design a flow control algorithm for the transmission of data packets between the network node directly above the RBS, the RNC, and the RBS. This flow control algorithm should keep the level of the buffers in the RBS on such a level that the air interface may be fully utilized. Yet it is not desirable with large buffers since e.g., this induces longer round-trip times as well as loss of all data in the buffers whenever the user moves to another cell and a handover is performed. Theoretical argumentations and simulations show that both of these requirements may be met, even though it is a balancing act.

Suggested is a control-theoretic framework in which the level in the RBS buffers are kept sufficiently large by taking into account predictions of future outflow over air and by using methods to compensate for outstanding data on the transport network. This makes it possible to keep the buffer levels stable and high enough to fully utilize the air interface. By using a more flexible adaptive control algorithm, it is shown possible to reach an even higher utilization of the air interface with the same or even lower buffering, which reduces the amount of data lost upon handovers. This loss is shown to be even more reduced by actively taking system messages about upcoming handover events into account as well.

Strained Silicon on Silicon by Wafer Bonding and Layer Transfer from Relaxed SiGe Buffer

Isaacson, David M., Taraschi, G., Pitera, Arthur J., Ariel, Nava, Fitzgerald, Eugene A., Langdo, Thomas A. 01 1900 (has links)
We report the creation of strained silicon on silicon (SSOS) substrate technology. The method uses a relaxed SiGe buffer as a template for inducing tensile strain in a Si layer, which is then bonded to another Si handle wafer. The original Si wafer and the relaxed SiGe buffer are subsequently removed, thereby transferring a strained-Si layer directly to Si substrate without intermediate SiGe or oxide layers. Complete removal of Ge from the structure was confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy as well as secondary ion mass spectrometry. A plan-view transmission electron microscopy study of the strained-Si/Si interface reveals that the lattice-mismatch between the layers is accommodated by an orthogonal array of edge dislocations. This misfit dislocation array, which forms upon bonding, is geometrically necessary and has an average spacing of approximately 40nm, in excellent agreement with established dislocation theory. To our knowledge, this is the first study of a chemically homogeneous, yet lattice-mismatched, interface. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Association rules for exploit code analysis to prevent Buffer Overflow

Li, Chang-Yu 01 August 2007 (has links)
As the development of software applications and Internet, the security issues that come with get more serious. Buffer Overflow is an unavoidable problem while software programming. According to the advisories of each year, they show that many security vulnerabilities are from Buffer Overflow. Buffer Overflow is also the cause of intrusion made by hackers. The users of software applications usually depend on the software updates released by software venders to prevent the attacks caused by Buffer Overflow. So before applying software updates, that how to avoid attacks to software and prolong the save period of software is an important issue to prevent Buffer Overflow. By collecting and analyzing the exploit codes used by hackers, we can build the overall pattern of Buffer Overflow attacks, and we can take this pattern as the basis for preventing future Buffer Overflow attacks. Association rules can find the relations of unknown things, so it can help to build the common pattern between Buffer Overflow attacks. So this work applies association rules to build the pattern of Buffer Overflow attacks, and to find out the relations of system calls inside the exploit codes. We experiment and build a group of system call rules that can differentiate the attack behavior and the normal behavior. These rules can detect the Buffer Overflow attacks exactly and perform well in false positives. And then they can help to do further defenses after detecting attacks and alleviate the seriousness of Buffer Overflow attacks to computer systems.

The Hydrolysis of Naphthalene Diimides

Kim, Michelle B 06 August 2007 (has links)
The hydrolyses of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) bearing aliphatic side chains with N-methylpyrrolidinium groups placed two (1) and three (5) atoms from the central core were studied. The Ka values for the first and second hydrolyses for 1 were 2.5 ± 0.2 x 105 M-1 and 2.0 ± 0.1 x 102 M-1, respectively; for 5 they were 1.4 ± 0.1 x 105 M-1 and 44 ± 2 M-1, respectively. NDI 1 hydrolyzed 6.8 times faster than did 5. The rates for the first and second hydrolyses of 1 at 100 mM hydroxide measured by stopped-flow were 17.0 ± 0.2 s-1 and 53.0 ± 0.1 x 10-2 s-1, respectively. NMR showed both the syn and anti isomers of the diamide species. Syntheses of other derivatives are reported. Overall, this study shows that the rate of hydrolysis of NDIs is increased when the cationic charge is moved closer to the NDI core.
