On the Influence of Mixing and Scaling-Up in Semi-Batch Reaction Crystallization

Semi-batch crystallization experiments have been performedboth in a loop reactor and in stirred tank reactors.Hydrochloric acid was fed to a stirred solution of sodiumbenzoate, and benzoic acid immediately formed. Benzoic acid isformed in excess of the solubility making the solutionsupersaturated. The loop reactor is U-shaped. In one leg a propeller stirrerwas placed to circulate the solution and in the other a turbinestirrer was placed in front of the feed point to vary the localmixing intensity. The objective was to analyse the relativeimportance of different levels of mixing on the product sizedistribution. The importance of mixing as well as scaling-upeffects on the product size distribution were studied in threestirred tank reactors of volumes 2.5 L, 10 L, and 200 L. Thestirred tank reactors had different geometry and were equippedwith either a marine propeller or a pitched blade turbine. The weight mean size generally increases with increasingtotal feeding time and increasing mixing intensity. The weightmean size increases by locating an extra turbine impeller atthe feed point in the 10 L stirred tank reactor. The turbineimpeller provides the desired feed point mixing intensitywithout raising the mixing intensity of the whole tank. The weight mean size increases with decreasing feed pipediameter in the loop reactor and for low feed rates in the 10 Lstirred tank reactor. The weight mean size increasessignificantly by changing the feed pipe opening from circularto rectangular with a constant cross-sectional area at equalfeed rates. Backmixing is visually observed in the largest feedpipe diameter in the loop reactor, thus, reducing the weightmean size. However, backmixing is not considered to be adominant phenomenon in the present work. Mesomixing time constants have been calculated according tothe turbulent dispersion mechanism and the inertial-convectivemechanism. The time constants for mesomixing are generallylonger than the time constant for micromixing. Thus, the ratioof the mesomixing and the micromixing time constants shows aninfluence of mesomixing as is shown by the experimentalresults. The experimental results are best described by theinertial-convective disintegration mechanism showing that thefeed plume mixing increases with decreasing feed pipe diameterand increased feed point mixing. The weight mean size is not strongly affected by the reactorvolume. However, the mixing conditions in the reactors have astrong influence on the weight mean size. No suggestedscaling-up rule can satisfactorily predict the weight mean sizein the different volumes. No single physical parameter, such asthe local energy dissipation rate, the mean energy dissipationrate or the circulation time, can satisfactorily explain theexperimental results. A new dimensionless mixing parameter, TR,has been defined as the ratio of the total feeding time and themesomixing time constant. The mesomixing time constant isdefined as the shortest dimension of the feed pipe divided bythe resultant bulk velocity passing the feed pipe entrance. Unesco, Malraux och ombildningens museum : Estetik och kosmopolitik i efterkrigstid

An inquiry into the post-war European aesthetic and political landscape should take the international organization Unesco’s colour reproductions and travelling exhibitions of paintings into consideration. In these, the organization implements André Malraux’ idea of the “imaginary museum” as a framework for a future cosmopolitical, aesthetic (and utopian) community. During the late 1940’s, the Swedish government also discusses the need for raising an “aesthetic awareness” amongst their citizens as a consequence to a poor knowledge in the fine arts. In short, there is a poor developed sensibility amongst the Swedish people. An aesthetic (re)shaping has political consequences since it concerns the sensibility of the political subject and his or hers ability to partake in a political order. The issue at hand is how these re-shapings are constituted and further developed, i.e. how these create new ways of sensing and new forms for the political subject. Or, in the stance of Unesco: the cosmopolitical subject. The international organization Unesco has its roots in the early 20th century. The making of the organization – both its birth and bureaucratic constitution – coincides with an emergent information society. Radio, colour-photography, television and film all defy boundaries in some way. These media re-organized time, space and perception, changing the awareness of the other. These media linked the world together in the following logic: same time, but different place. The work that Unesco undertook came to revolve around these media and this logic, especially since Unesco furthered Malraux’s imaginary museum. Unesco’s constitution describes the origins of conflict as residing in man’s mind and promotes the free flow of ideas by word and image. New media would act in an enlightening way and play a significant role in making the organizations dream of a global unity come true. This thesis describes art’s function in Unesco’s attempt to bring this utopia to life. / En undersökning av efterkrigstidens estetiska och politiska landskap bör ta hänsyn till den internationella organisationen Unesco:s kataloger och vandringsutställningar med färgreproduktioner. Organisationen implementerar i dessa André Malrauxs ”imaginära museum” som en tankemodell för en framtida kosmopoltisk, estetisk (och utopisk) gemenskap. Under det sena 1940-talet diskuteras också i Sverige behovet av ”estetisk fostran” som en konsekvens av en estetisk obildning, en illa utvecklad sensibilitet hos det svenska folket. En estetisk (om)bildning har en politisk innebörd såtillvida att det rör det politiska subjektets förnimmande och hans eller hennes förmåga att vara delaktig i en politisk ordning. Frågan är hur ovan nämnda ombildningar konstitueras och utvecklas, hur dessa kan alstra nya sätt att förnimma eller ge upphov till nya former för den politiska subjektiviteten. Eller för Unesco:s räkning: den kosmopolitiska subjektiviteten. Den internationella organisationen Unesco har rötter i det tidiga 1900-talet. Organisationens konstitution – dess födelse och författning – sammanfaller med ett framväxande informationssamhälle. Radion, färgfotografiet, televisionen och filmen trotsar på olika sätt gränser. Den omordning av tid, rum och perception som dessa medier medgav, gav en ny medvetenhet om den andre. Medierna knöt samman världen enligt logiken: samtidigt, men på olika platser. Unesco:s arbete kom på olika sätt att kretsa kring dessa medier och denna logik, särskilt som man vidareutvecklade Malrauxs imaginära museum. Unesco:s konstitution beskriver konflikters inre härkomst och uttrycker en vilja att låta idéer flöda fritt över nationsgränser med hjälp av ord och bild. De nya medierna kunde verka upplysande och skulle spela en framträdande roll i organisationens förverkligande av sin dröm om en världspolitisk enhet. Denna uppsats beskriver konstens plats i Unesco:s försök att förverkliga denna utopi.

Mosaic Paths to New Knowledge: Conceptualizing Cultural Wealth from Women of Colour as They Experience the Process of becoming Doctoral Recipients

Abstract The aim of this study is to identify the positive contributions women of colour (WOC) bring to higher education as they experience the process of becoming doctoral recipients. Their experiences are presented as a new epistemology—a theory of knowledge—as part of the larger area of cultural capital theory. The experiences of WOC in Canadian doctoral programs are conceptualized as ‘cultural wealth’ and new knowledge because evidence reveals that the intrinsic value of their contributions has evolved from unique cultural and historical resources. The discursive theoretical frameworks of Womanist theory, critical race theory (CRT) and cultural capital theory are utilized to guide the analysis of the findings. This study establishes the experiences of the participants as valuable and distinctive knowledge by emphasizing the intersectionality of race, class, gender, culture, and spirituality. The research suggests that the experiences of women of colour are informed by an inner wisdom woven from the mosaic, or uniquely diverse paths, which these women have taken toward earning their doctorate degree. The existing interpretation of cultural capital theory - originally established by Bourdieu and Passeron (1977) - is considered the only social marker of wealth in socio-economical and educational research. Although previous studies have challenged this dominant perspective, this current study presents a unique interpretation of cultural capital theory by expanding the notion of cultural wealth from a Canadian perspective. This study highlights the importance of the racial/cultural context that is highly visible in Canadian culture but seldom addressed in higher education research. In addition, the aim of my study is to establish the wealth of “Mosaic Paths” found among the cultural identity of WOC, as a new epistemology in Canadian higher education. Specifically, the journey toward achieving a doctoral degree is often over-generalized in higher education. This study will reveal the realistic paths that WOC must traverse in order to realize their goals. Finally, the findings from the data reveal six major sources of cultural wealth: 1) Mother’s Influence, 2) Age Capital, 3) Mentorship, 4) Survival Strategies, 5) Negotiating Academic Culture or Know-how, and 6) Spirituality.

Kransalger i Lillsjön : En studie av vattenkvaliteten i Lillsjön, med fokus på faktorer som påverkar Charas utbredning.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the water chemistry in lake Lillsjön have changed significantly due to human impact of surrounding areas. Lake Lillsjön is located outside the central parts of Östersund. It is an important recrational area, and has great natural values, among other things it is habitat for several species of Chara stoneworts. Chara requires clear calcareous water, high pH, relatively low levels of nitrate-nitrogen and low phosphorus concentrations. Lake Lillsjöns is recepient for surface water from a nearby commercial and industrial area, as well as melt water from an adjecent snow dump. Compared to ten other Chara-lakes in the region, lake Lillsjön shows higher concentration of total phosphorus and higher water colour. The study concludes that the surface water from surrounding areas, as well as melting water from the snow dump, are the main sources of the higher concentration of total phosphorus in lake Lillsjön. While the colour of the incoming water only shows a weak difference compared to the water colour of the reference lakes, the source of the higher water colour cannot be established. The water of lake Lillsjön can not be consider a suitable habitat for Chara.

Igensättning av långsamfilter i Östby vattenverk i Kramfors : studie av påverkande faktorer / Clogging of slow sand filters at Östby waterworks in Kramfors : study of affecting factors

Östby waterworks in the community of Kramfors has since 2003 had problems of fast clogging of the slow sand filters. As the clogging appears more often, they must be cleaned more frequently which has made the drinking water preparation difficult. Wintertime it has sometimes been impossible to clean the filters which has led to their closing and this has influenced the water quality negatively. The waterworks is a surface waterworks which takes its raw water from the lake Sjöbysjön. The water is flocculated and filtered in a contact filter with the flocculent EKOFLOCK 91. Thereafter it is alkalinized before it reaches the outdoors placed slow sand filters. After the filters the water is alkalinized and disinfected before it reaches the customers. This thesis work has looked into which factors influence the clogging and trials have been made in order to optimize the waterworks and thereby reduce the clogging. The raw water has been studied with aspect to biology and chemistry, the filtered water has been studied with aspect to chemistry and also the pressures in the slow sand filters have been studied. The colour of the raw water from Sjöbysjön and its catchment area has increased since the beginning of the 90-ies and also the bio volume has increased in the lake. The contents of aluminium before the slow sand filters are far higher than the contents after, which leads to the conclusion that aluminium is accumulated in the filters. The differential pressure over the sand bed increases with time after a cleaning. This indicates an accumulation of particles which increases with the load. Observations of the filter surface before cleaning showed that it was covered by a brown, jelly-like film. The internal resistance in the filter beds increases successively after a cleaning and one month after cleaning it is highest in the upper part of the sand bed. All this points to that flocculated aluminium is gathered in the slow sand filters, on the surface, causing clogging. While the thesis work has been going on a process of alkalinizing before the contact filters has been reengaged and this has influenced the flocking of organic materials. When raising the pH the dose of flocculent was increased and this combined increased the amount of flocculated material. The contact filters could not bear this increased amount of flock load but showed instead a breakthrough. In a few lab scale trials the flocking pH was varied as well as the dose flocculent to the raw water and after this the water was filtrated. A tendency was seen that the separation of aluminium, colour and turbidity increased with increasing pH and dose flocculent. At the pH 6.2 and the chemical dose of 60 g/m3 the content of aluminium, the colour and the turbidity showed the lowest values in the filtrate. / Vattenverket i Östby, Kramfors kommun, har sedan 2003 haft problem med för snabba igensättningar i långsamfiltren. Ju oftare de sätter igen desto mer frekvent måste de rensas vilket har försvårat dricksvattenberedningen. Vintertid har rensningar ibland inte kunnat utföras och långsamfiltren har därför stängts av vilket har påverkat vattenkvaliteten negativt. Verket är ett ytvattenverk som tar sitt råvatten från Sjöbysjön. Vattnet flockas och filtreras i kontaktfilter med fällningskemikalien EKOFLOCK 91. Därefter mellanalkaliniseras det innan det går till de utomhus placerade långsamfiltren. Efter långsamfiltren efteralkaliniseras och desinficeras det innan det når konsumenterna. I detta examensarbete har faktorer som påverkar igensättningarna undersökts och försök har också gjorts för att optimera driften och därmed minska igensättningarna. Råvattnet har undersökts avseende dess biologi och kemi, filtraten i verken har undersökts med avseende på deras kemi och tryckbildningar i långsamfiltren har studerats. Färgtalet i råvattentäkten Sjöbysjön och dess tillrinningsområde har ökat sedan början av 90- talet och dessutom har biovolymen i sjön ökat. Halterna aluminium före långsamfiltren är mycket högre än halterna efter, vilket antyder att aluminium ansamlas i filtren. Differentialtrycket över sandbädden ökar med tiden efter en rensning. Detta tyder på en ansamling av partiklar som ökar med belastningen. Observationer av filterytan innan rensning visade att den täcktes av en brun geléaktig hinna. Motståndet i filtren ökar successivt efter en rensning och är en månad efter rensning störst i den övre delen av sandbädden. Allt detta pekar på att aluminiumflock ansamlas i långsamfiltren, på ytan, och orsakar igensättningarna. Under examensarbetets gång har en föralkalinisering återinförts i vattenverkets process och den har påverkat fällningen av det organiska materialet. Då pH höjts har också dosen fällningskemikalie ökats vilket har ökat mängden flock. Denna ökade flockmängd har kontaktfiltren inte kunnat bära utan istället släppt igenom. I några försök i labbskala varierades fällnings-pH och dos fällningskemikalie till råvatten med en efterföljande filtrering. Tendenser som kunde ses var att avskiljningen av aluminium, färg och turbiditet ökade med ökat pH och ökad dos fällningskemikalie. Vid pH 6,2 och kemikaliedos på 60 g/m3 var aluminiumhalterna, färgen och turbiditeten som minst i filtratet.

This Master’s thesis studies the possibility of using image processing as a tool to facilitate vine management, in particular shoot counting and assessment of the grapevine canopy. Both are areas where manual inspection is done today. The thesis presents methods of capturing images and segmenting different parts of a vine. It also presents and evaluates different approaches on how shoot counting can be done. Within canopy assessment, the emphasis is on methods to estimate canopy density. Other possible assessment areas are also discussed, such as canopy colour and measurement of canopy gaps and fruit exposure. An example of a vine assessment system is given.

Les grelots mésoaméricains : sons et couleurs du pouvoir?

Ce mémoire prend la forme d’une réflexion critique sur le modèle proposé par Hosler afin d’expliquer les taux quantifiés d’étain et d’arsénique dans des objets de statut métalliques Mésoaméricains provenant principalement de l’Occident mésoaméricain et couvrant les deux phases de développement de la métallurgie mésoaméricaine. Ces objets font partie de la collection du Museo Regional de Guadalajara. Plus particulièrement, ce mémoire s’intéresse aux grelots mésoaméricains puisqu’ils représentent un élément important de la métallurgie préhispanique en Mésoamérique. Cette réflexion critique soulève plusieurs considérations techniques, méthodologiques, étymologiques, iconographiques, ethnohistoriques et logiques du modèle de Hosler relativement à la couleur des alliages constituant les grelots mésoaméricains. Les paramètres sur lesquels Hosler base son modèle sont questionnables à plusieurs niveaux. Ainsi, le fait que les niveaux d’arsenic ou d’étain observés dans les alliages cupriques de biens utilitaires sont généralement inférieurs à ceux quantifiés dans les alliages cupriques usités pour la fabrication de biens de statut de la Période 2 pourrait s’expliquer par le fait qu’il s’agit de deux méthodes de fabrication distinctes ayant des contraintes techniques différentes ou que ces artéfacts ont des paramètres et des fonctions distinctes. Les limites de l’association soleil-or, lune-argent y sont également exposées et un chapitre est consacré à la sonorité. / This thesis takes the form of a critical reflection on the model proposed by Hosler to explain the levels of tin and arsenic in metallic Mesoamerican status objects coming mainly from the western part of Mesoamerica and covering both phases of the development of Mesoamerican metallurgy. These objects are part of the collection of Museo Regional de Guadalajara. In particular, this thesis focuses on Mesoamerican bells since they represent an important element of the development of pre-Hispanic metallurgy.This critical reflection raises several technical, methodological, etymological iconographic, ethnohistorical and logical concerns regarding Hosler’s model relating to the colour of the alloys making up Mesoamerican bells. The desire to obtain certain colours can not be proven based solely on the results of composition analysis. Furthermore, the parameters on which Hosler bases her model are questionable on several levels. For example, the fact that the levels of arsenic or tin observed in copper based alloys used for the fabrication of utilitarian goods are generally lower than those measured in copper alloys used for status goods from Period 2 could be explained by the differing technical constraints of two distinct fabrication methods or by the contrasting parameters and functions of the two types of artifact. The limits of the association between sun-gold and moon-silver are also exposed. A chapter is also dedicated to the sonority of the bells.

Dreams are one of the most secret processes of human’s psychology which formation device has not been finally clarified yet. Scientists from all over the world, successfully working on this project, the results of their researches and works adduce as different hypothesis, because it is really difficult to formulate thesis that could be tested using laboratories because of the research specifics of the psychophysical proceeding of a dream. It is usual that a new theory is often denied by some examples which can not be proved according to the theory. Realized and unrealized proceedings reflect in dreams which in their content are connected with phenomenon from the outer world, just as psychophysical proceedings of human organism or demands. The content of dreams is mostly influenced by past experience and information lying in subliminal mind. However, such an explanation does not overwhelm a big part of dreams which are interesting and secret. In the research paper there was analyzed the influence of dreams on the dreamer, what sort of mood he has in the morning. It is possible that many days or weeks he is persecuted by a black shadow of a woeful dream, which is difficult to remember. It is possible that he feels tired and prostrate or conversely: he feels assured, negotiating all the barriers on his way. Colour and its symbolic meaning also have a big role in a dream.
