Mobility management across converged IP-based heterogeneous access networksMussabbir, Qazi Bouland January 2010 (has links)
In order to satisfy customer demand for a high performance “global” mobility service, network operators (ISPs, carriers, mobile operators, etc.) are facing the need to evolve to a converged “all-IP” centric heterogeneous access infrastructure. However, the integration of such heterogeneous access networks (e.g. 802.11, 802.16e, UMTS etc) brings major mobility issues. This thesis tackles issues plaguing existing mobility management solutions in converged IP-based heterogeneous networks. In order to do so, the thesis firstly proposes a cross-layer mechanism using the upcoming IEEE802.21 MIH services to make intelligent and optimized handovers. In this respect, FMIPv6 is integrated with the IEEE802.21 mechanism to provide seamless mobility during the overall handover process. The proposed solution is then applied in a simulated vehicular environment to optimize the NEMO handover process. It is shown through analysis and simulations of the signalling process that the overall expected handover (both L2 and L3) latency in FMIPv6 can be reduced by the proposed mechanism by 69%. Secondly, it is expected that the operator of a Next Generation Network will provide mobility as a service that will generate significant revenues. As a result, dynamic service bootstrapping and authorization mechanisms must be in place to efficiently deploy a mobility service (without static provisioning), which will allow only legitimate users to access the service. A GNU Linux based test-bed has been implemented to demonstrate this. The experiments presented show the handover performance of the secured FMIPv6 over the implemented test-bed compared to plain FMIPv6 and MIPv6 by providing quantitative measurements and results on the quality of experience perceived by the users of IPv6 multimedia applications. The results show the inclusion of the additional signalling of the proposed architecture for the purpose of authorization and bootstrapping (i.e. key distribution using HOKEY) has no adverse effect on the overall handover process. Also, using a formal security analysis tool, it is shown that the proposed mechanism is safe/secure from the induced security threats. Lastly, a novel IEEE802.21 assisted EAP based re-authentication scheme over a service authorization and bootstrapping framework is presented. AAA based authentication mechanisms like EAP incur signalling overheads due to large RTTs. As a result, overall handover latency also increases. Therefore, a fast re-authentication scheme is presented which utilizes IEEE802.21 MIH services to minimize the EAP authentication process delays and as a result reduce the overall handover latency. Analysis of the signalling process based on analytical results shows that the overall handover latency for mobility protocols will be approximately reduced by 70% by the proposed scheme.

Mobility Management (MM) eftersträvar ett helhetstänk där all samhällsplanering bedöms påverka trafikflöden och resmönstren. Områden som traditionellt inte tillhör trafikplanering anses inom konceptet Mobility Management vara medskapare i att nå effektiv mobilitet. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka konceptets ursprung och dess innebörd, med tonvikt på de argument som åberopas för att få människor att ändra sitt resebeteende i hållbar riktning. Jag jämför även Mobility Management med tidigare planeringideal för att placera konceptet i ett sammanhang och finna ursprunget till idéerna. Genom att läsa dokument från nätverket Möjligheter med Mobility Management i Samhället (MMMiS), Trafikverket, SKL, Trivector och regeringen bildar jag en uppfattning om Mobility Managements innebörd i Sverige idag och sökte granska innehållet efter generella drag. Uppsatsen är därigenom en dokumentsanalys och en kvalitativstudie av Mobility Management. I uppsatsen finner jag att Mobility Management som koncept inte står ensamt mot sitt ursprung och innebörden är inte helt frånskild från tidigare trafikplanering. Skillnaden är dock att vi nu tydligare kan se att trafikplanering och övrig samhällsplanering hör samman.

The software integration with new network architectures via Software-Defined Networking (SDN) axis appears to be a major evolution of networks. While this paradigm was primarily developed for easy network setup, its ability to integrate services has also to be considered. Thus, the mobility service for which solutions have been proposed in conventional architectures by defining standardized protocols should be rethought in terms of SDN service. Mobile devices might use or move in SDN network. In this thesis, we proposed a new mobility management approach which called "SDN-Mobility" and has shown that SDN can be implemented without IP mobility protocol for providing mobility like as Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) that is the solution adopted by 3GPP, with some performance gain. However, PMIPv6 and SDN-Mobility have some packets loss during Mobile Node (MN) handover. Thus, in this thesis, we proposed a new paradigm based on caching function to improve the quality of transfer during handover. Caching policy cooperates with SDN controller for automatic buffering of the data during the handover. We proposed two caching policies that are compared through a performance analysis regarding the quality of transfer for the user and for the operator. This thesis also presented that SDN-Mobility with caching policy can be applied easily for mobility management in heterogeneous network architectures able to integrate the future Internet based on the Information-Centric Networking (ICN).

A Unified Mobility Management Architecture for Interworked Heterogeneous Mobile NetworksMunasinghe, Kumudu S January 2009 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) / The buzzword of this decade has been convergence: the convergence of telecommunications, Internet, entertainment, and information technologies for the seamless provisioning of multimedia services across different network types. Thus the future Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) can be envisioned as a group of co-existing heterogeneous mobile data networking technologies sharing a common Internet Protocol (IP) based backbone. In such all-IP based heterogeneous networking environments, ongoing sessions from roaming users are subjected to frequent vertical handoffs across network boundaries. Therefore, ensuring uninterrupted service continuity during session handoffs requires successful mobility and session management mechanisms to be implemented in these participating access networks. Therefore, it is essential for a common interworking framework to be in place for ensuring seamless service continuity over dissimilar networks to enable a potential user to freely roam from one network to another. For the best of our knowledge, the need for a suitable unified mobility and session management framework for the NGMN has not been successfully addressed as yet. This can be seen as the primary motivation of this research. Therefore, the key objectives of this thesis can be stated as: To propose a mobility-aware novel architecture for interworking between heterogeneous mobile data networks To propose a framework for facilitating unified real-time session management (inclusive of session establishment and seamless session handoff) across these different networks. In order to achieve the above goals, an interworking architecture is designed by incorporating the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as the coupling mediator between dissipate mobile data networking technologies. Subsequently, two different mobility management frameworks are proposed and implemented over the initial interworking architectural design. The first mobility management framework is fully handled by the IMS at the Application Layer. This framework is primarily dependant on the IMS’s default session management protocol, which is the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The second framework is a combined method based on SIP and the Mobile IP (MIP) protocols, which is essentially operated at the Network Layer. An analytical model is derived for evaluating the proposed scheme for analyzing the network Quality of Service (QoS) metrics and measures involved in session mobility management for the proposed mobility management frameworks. More precisely, these analyzed QoS metrics include vertical handoff delay, transient packet loss, jitter, and signaling overhead/cost. The results of the QoS analysis indicates that a MIP-SIP based mobility management framework performs better than its predecessor, the Pure-SIP based mobility management method. Also, the analysis results indicate that the QoS performances for the investigated parameters are within acceptable levels for real-time VoIP conversations. An OPNET based simulation platform is also used for modeling the proposed mobility management frameworks. All simulated scenarios prove to be capable of performing successful VoIP session handoffs between dissimilar networks whilst maintaining acceptable QoS levels. Lastly, based on the findings, the contributions made by this thesis can be summarized as: The development of a novel framework for interworked heterogeneous mobile data networks in a NGMN environment. The final design conveniently enables 3G cellular technologies (such as the Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) or Code Division Multiple Access 2000 (CDMA2000) type systems), Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) technologies, and Wireless Metropolitan Area Networking (WMAN) technologies (e.g., Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems such as WiMAX) to interwork under a common signaling platform. The introduction of a novel unified/centralized mobility and session management platform by exploiting the IMS as a universal coupling mediator for real-time session negotiation and management. This enables a roaming user to seamlessly handoff sessions between different heterogeneous networks. As secondary outcomes of this thesis, an analytical framework and an OPNET simulation framework are developed for analyzing vertical handoff performance. This OPNET simulation platform is suitable for commercial use.

Att påverka stockholmarnas resebeteende genom en integrering av mobility management i samhällsplaneringen : Framtida potential för MaxLupoSELind, Jonas January 2011 (has links)
Biltrafiken bidrar till flera av Sveriges stora miljöproblem. Samtidigt har bilen haft en självklar plats i samhällsplaneringen och städers utformning har anpassats efter att många använder sig dagligen av fordonet. För att minska bilanvändandet är den fysiska utformningen av våra samhällen viktiga men också människors beteende. Mobility management innefattar en rad åtgärder för att just påverka människors beteende och attityder för att främja ett mer, främst miljömässigt, hållbart resande. I denna uppsats undersöks om uppställda förslag, från rapporten MaxLupoSE, kring hur mobility management kan integreras i samhällsplaneringen har potential att implementeras i Stockholm stad. Detta har undersökts genom samtal med tjänstemän inom Stockholm stad, tjänstemän på andra kommuner och representanter från byggföretag som är verksamma som byggherrar inom staden. Okunskap om effekterna hos mobility management-åtgärder samt osäkerhet kring hur detaljstyrande som staden kan vara kring dessa frågor i samhällsplaneringen är de två stora hinder som redogörs för i denna uppsats. Till detta kan tilläggas att arbetet med mobility management måste komma in tidigt i planprocessen, bygglov anses för sent av såväl byggherrar som tjänstemän. Inställningen till mobility management och osäkerheten kring detaljstyrningen kan även kopplas till tidigare forskning inom området som visar att förankring och motivering av åtgärderna är viktigt. Samtidigt kan det diskuteras huruvida en diskurs om bilens självklara plats i samhällsplaneringen ligger bakom den okunskap som finns om mobility management. Slutligen kan det konstateras att MaxLupoSE kan komma till bukt med dessa hinder genom klarare riktlinjer men att det i grunden handlar om vilka politiska mål som sätts upp för samhällsbyggandet.

Yes / The next generation in mobility management will enable different mobile networks to interoperate with each other to ensure terminal and personal mobility and global portability of network services. However, in order to ensure global mobility, the deployment and integration of both satellite and terrestrial components are necessary. This article is focused on issues reltaed to mobility management in a future mobile communications system, in a scenario where a multisegment access network is integrated into an IP core network by exploiting the principles of Mobile IP. In particular, attention is given to the requirements for location, address, and handover management. In a heterogeneous environment, the need to perform handover between access networks imposes particular constraints on the type of information available to the terminal and network. In this case, consideration will need to be given to parameters other than radio characteristics, such as achievable quality of service and user preference. this article proposes a new approach to handover management by applying the fuzzy logic concept to a heterogeneous environment. The article concludes with the presentation of mobility management signaling protocols.

This study is an examination of factors present in the work process for sustainable transitioning of traffic systems in Linköping and Uppsala municipalities. Both from a technical and a behavioral point of view. This study uses a qualitative methodology to answer and examine this subject. Data has been collected with the use of interviews with urban planners from two municipalities and a document analysis of planning documents pertaining to traffic planning in these municipalities. Previous research within the topic has been gathered to strengthen the studies legitimacy and depth. The results of this study found that multiple factors influence the ability and effectiveness of the work municipalities towards a sustainable traffic transition. Such as political willpower, economical instruments for control and preexisting car infrastructure and culture. We have also found varied responses from municipalities regarding the usage of mobility management measures for traffic transition. / Denna studie undersöker faktorer som inom Linköpings och Uppsalas kommuners arbetsprocess för hållbar trafikomställning, både ur teknisk och beteendemässig synvinkel. Studien använder sig av en kvalitativ metod för att besvara frågeställningar och analyser ämnet. Data har samlats in genom intervjuer med stadsplanerare från två kommuner och en dokumentanalys av styrdokument som berör trafikplanering i dessa kommuner. Tidigare forskning inom ämnet har samlats in för att stärka studiens legitimitet och djup. Resultaten av denna studie visar att flera faktorer påverkar kommunernas förmåga och effektivitet att arbeta mot en hållbar trafikomställning. Såsom politisk vilja, ekonomiska styrmedel och befintlig bilinfrastruktur och kultur. Vi har också funnit varierande svar från kommuner angående användningen av mobility management åtgärder för trafikomställning.

En sådan parkeringslösning förutsätter dock att viss markyta inom området avsätts för att kunna ställa upp sin bil under en kortare period för att hämta eller lämna passagerare samt lasta i eller ur gods. Detta kallas för att korttidsangöra. Examensarbetet har kartlagt hur korttidsangöring används samt undersökt om behovet att angöra påverkas av avstånd till parkering och socioekonomiska faktorer inom ett område.
