Politické dimenze československého exilu v Kanadě 1948-1989 / Political Dimensions of the Czechoslovak Exile in Canada 1948-1989

Hodboď, Jakub January 2011 (has links)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE Filosofická fakulta Ústav politologie Diplomová práce Bc. Jakub Hodboď MSc. Politické dimenze československého exilu v Kanadě 1948 - 1989 Political Dimensions of the Czechoslovak Exile in Canada 1948 -1989 Praha 2011 vedoucí práce: Doc. PhDr. Jiří Kocian, CSc SUMMARY This study narrowly analyzed political and cultural-political dimension of the Czechoslovak exile in Canada during the selected period 1948-1989. Besides the introduction of the official political reactions and the evolution of political agendas, the cultural, educational and sports activities were examined, as they contributed to and supported other directly political events of the exile. The "other side" was presented too through the introduction of the strategies and tactics of the Czechoslovak communist regime used against the exile community in Canada. Well-established Czechoslovak compatriots managed to react effectively to the changes in Czechoslovakia after 1948. Complex issues such as the assistance and support of the refugees and new immigrants were solved in the cooperation with other global Czechoslovak exile organizations. Main role among the organizations in Canada belonged to the Czechoslovak National Association in Canada, Masaryk Memorial Institute and to the gymnastic organization Sokol. Highly...

Ruská emigrace vnější a vnitřní - nesoustavné dějiny jednoho kulturního fenoménu / Russian Exile and Inner Emigration - an Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon.

Souček, Martin January 2013 (has links)
In my dissertation "Russian Exile and Inner Emigration An Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon" I attempt to examine the issue of the Russian mentality against the background of Russian literary and intellectual trends over the course of one hundred years - from the December Revolt in 1825 to the period after the October Revolution in 1917. The phenomenon of inner emigration and exile, which is characteristic for this period of time, is examined through the use of authentic sources, that is solely literary and epistolary records, as well as through the Czech reflection of the Russian soul, as it was perceived and presented from the time of Masaryk and Slavík and after them by many Czech and foreign scholars up to the present. Examining authentic testimonies, the aim of the work is to make the point that despite the confrontation with European rationalist influences, the Russian world and the so- called Russian soul essentially always retained a spiritual dimension from the Eastern civilizations, based not on rationality but on sensation, not on scholastic argumentation of the external existence of God but on a realization of the unity and the inner interconnection of the material and spiritual world.

Formování českého stranického systému 1943-1945 / Formation of the Czech Party System 1943-1945

Langerová, Pavlína January 2015 (has links)
This work is about the renewal of the Czech party system in period of 1943-1945. The introduction focuses on the liquidation of the party system in 1938, the party system of the Second Republic and contextualisation of the work to party systems theories. Another part deals with the formation of concepts of domestic and foreign Czechoslovak resistance on the future shape of the party system, in particular the cooperation of Moscow and London exile. The thesis describes the relationships and actions of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, based in the Soviet Union and their democratic competitors, who were headquartered in London, where the President Beneš and the State Council were seated. In particular, these relationships are the starting point for this work's research thesis: how the negotiations between the exile in London and Moscow influence and determined the post-war party constitution. The hypothesis that the activity of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in the Moscow exile was vital for the post-war party development will be confirmed or disproved in the conclusion. The final chapter focuses on initial period of the restoration of the organizational form and policy programs of the party system in the years 1944 - 1945 and the beginnings of activity of the parties within the National Front...

"Raíces y Alas”:
Puerto Rico y el archivo transnacional de Juan Ramón Jiménez

Garriga Barbosa, Laurie Mar 24 February 2022 (has links)
My dissertation analyzes the Spanish Nobel Laureate poet’s transatlantic path and his relationship to Spain, the United States and Puerto Rico as expressed in his archival practices from 1916 (his first trip to the U.S.) until his death in 1958. Jiménez went into permanent exile in 1936, when he and his wife Zenobia Camprubí fled from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). During the war and subsequent dictatorship of Francisco Franco, Jiménez would live in Cuba, Coral Gables, Baltimore and Washington before settling in Puerto Rico in 1951. In Madrid, supporters of Franco broke into his residence and ransacked his papers, books and personal items ––his carefully-kept life's work–– which would take many years to recover only partially. Jiménez never returned to Spain. He died in Puerto Rico in 1958, not only writing new poems but rewriting, recreating and “reliving” his poems and prose, labors for which he had always depended upon his personal archive. Before his death, Jiménez destined his Nobel Prize earnings to the institutionalization of his archive (Sala Zenobia-Juan Ramón Jiménez, University of Puerto Rico) and to a museum (Casa-Museo Zenobia/Juan Ramón Jiménez) located in his childhood home in the Andalusian town of Moguer. The dissertation presents Jiménez as a steward of memory across borders and studies how the partial recovery of his papers and the establishment of his Sala in the University of Puerto Rico —one of the very first examples of the acquisition of a major writer’s papers in the U.S. or Puerto Rico— coincides with the formation of a national, cultural narrative and with archival practices heavily dependent upon a shifting national conception of Puerto Rican identity. Jiménez was attempting to reconstruct and preserve his work on an island still struggling to establish national, educational, cultural and archival institutions and to recover from the dispersal of its historical documents throughout Europe and in Washington, D.C. My dissertation examines Jiménez’s archive in the context of Puerto Rico's loss and repossession of its colonial archive and modernization of its own archival practices.

[pt] PARENTALIDADE TRANSCULTURAL NOS CASAIS EM VIVÊNCIA DE EXÍLIO / [en] TRANSCULTURAL PARENTHOOD OF COUPLES IN EXILE

CLÁUDIA REGINA DA COSTA PINNA 23 June 2020 (has links)
[en] In a scenario of continuous displacements, due to situations of generalized violence in the country of origin, we find subjects living in exile with the memories of their homeland, as something left behind and forever. This crack in the social envelope, which the motherland leaves in her children, causes an incurable wound, leading to situations of helplessness, loss and damage. This research, presented in the format of two articles, aimed to investigate the crosscultural parenting of couples in exile, with their first child born in Brazilian territory. To achieve the proposed objectives, four couples were interviewed, three coming from the same South American country and one from an African country. Each spouse was interviewed individually, configuring a total of eight people (n equal 8). The interviews were analyzed according to the method of content analysis. It was found that for these couples, the first experience of parenthood represented a powerful creation of a new world, founded between the lasting and the ephemeral, the past and the present, allowing the repair of the void to which exile drove them.

Crosslands

Schlatter, James C 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
CROSSLANDS is a novel about two Americans, Walter and Sissy, who find themselves trapped in Mexico. They are out of money, credit, and a job. They are trapped because they haven’t been able to secure a passport for their Mexican-born son, and have been told by the authorities, both American and Mexican, that they won’t be able to leave without one. The novel is a gradual pressuring of these characters as they go from town to town in an effort to bribe an official to give them what they need. As they grow more frantic, all the failings of their young marriage, and the dubious circumstances surrounding it, are revealed. The main character, Walter, is an idealistic, though unsuccessful actor from New York City. Sissy is young and volatile, emaciated from a country constantly violating her body. Except for a few brief flashbacks, the setting occurs entirely in Mexico- principally in Querétaro, but also in Mexico City and Patzcuaro. Seen through one lens, the novel is about Walter’s desperation to maintain his artistic freedom. It also turns the current Mexican immigration issue on its head. By stripping away all the benefits of being American (money, influence, etc.), even the identity of their son, Walter and Sissy are reduced to the plight that many immigrants suffer in the United States. They confront the language barrier, the strangeness of a foreign culture, and ironically, the fence that runs along the border prevents them from returning to their own country.
