3D analysis of apical dendritic organization in the prefrontal cortex of young and old monkey

Burgess, JoColl Alexis 11 July 2018 (has links)
Its known that the age-related decline in cognitive facilities is not due to the loss of neurons but more subtle changes in specific areas of the brain. Structural and morphological changes in cellular alignment in the minicolumns correlate with increased prevalence of neurological diseases and in aging. In the rhesus monkey, cognitive decline is similar to what humans experience in aging. In the monkey prefrontal cortex, Brodmann area 46, an important region for executive functioning, cognitive decline correlates with changes in cellular alignment or “columnar strength” as studies by Cruz et al., (2009). Using the density maps method in Area 46, the ventral bank was identified to be the most susceptible to structural changes. Minicolumns, are defined by the cellular alignment of neurons in the cortex and some believe that the dendritic bundles of neurons in the cortex is also considered an integral part of the columns. The functional role of apical dendrites, is not well understood, however, given the that repeated organized bundles transverse through the laminae could be further support for their inclusion in minicolumns with possible functional importance. If structural changes such as loss of columnar strength (neuronal displacement) that correlates with cognitive aging, it is possible that the dendritic organization may also be affected in this area. In this thesis, it is hypothesized that the dendritic bundles in this area could also be related to the cognitive deficits associated with normal aging. Using double- fluorescence labeling for dendrites (MAP-2) and neurons (Neu-N), 3D confocal reconstructions of the dorsal and ventral banks of Area 46 were used to investigate structural/morphological changes in the dendritic bundles in young and old rhesus monkeys. While cortical thickness and apical dendritic length between both banks did not change, we found a significant increase in inter-bundle spacing at layer 6A in the older monkeys in the ventral bank. Inter-bundle spacing for bundles in layer 5 was measured and showed that the young consistently have smaller inter-bundle spacing. Future studies with larger sample size will also investigate whether changes in dendritic bundles and their organization also correlate with age-related cognitive deficits.

Gonçalves, Luciana de Oliveira January 2011 (has links)
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências da Saúde. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem. / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-26T08:00:39Z (GMT). As interfaces entre a condição humana e o cuidado de si ocorrem nos aspectos relacionados à saúde e ao corpo / The human condition and the caring for itself are two philosophical issues straight related to life. The human condition characterized by the vita activa consists of three fundamental human activities - labor, work and action. Each of these activities matches a basic condition for human life. The caring for itself is an attribute and a universal need of human beings at the same time, guided by principles of general application, although oriented to a practice of feature and responsibilities absolutely individual. From the texts of Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault sought to understand to what extent and how the human condition and caring for itself of health professionals teachers at a private university in southern Brazil find similarities and differences with the characteristics described by Arendt and Foucault. To this end, we sought to describe the characteristics of health professional.s teachers, to identify the activities that sustain the human condition of these subjects, to investigate the practices of caring for itself and to analyze the interfaces between the human condition and caring for itself in these health professionals. teachers. For this purpose, we used qualitative, exploratory and descriptive method. The data collection was by semi structured interviews with eleven health professionals teachers. We performed the content analysis theme categorical and were completed the three steps (pre-analysis, material exploration and processing of the results, inferences and interpretation) of analysis as proposed by Minayo (2007), Bardin (2010), Oliveira (2008). The analysis of the responses of health professionals teachers in relation to the questions that sought to reveal aspects related to the human condition emerged three categories - the paths taken to teaching, to live and survive at university, happiness and good works in teaching, which led to eight subcategories. From the theme of caring for itself emerged three other categories - faces and masks of health, breaking daily life and attempts to, the looking to itself and the moving; subdivided into four subcategories. At the end of this thesis was possible to characterize the participants as professionals who renounced clinical career and chose teaching. The preparation for teaching was done after admission at the university, in their own teaching practice, in other words, they were learning to "be a teacher" in the daily work. The work emerges as a central activity that sustains the human condition and the absence of caring for itself is established as a result. The interfaces between the human condition and the caring for itself occur in aspects related to health and body

School leadership and inclusive education practices in Caribbean secondary schools

Moriah, Mishel Patrina January 2017 (has links)
Research to date has emphasized the importance of school leadership in improving outcomes for schools with diverse populations (NASSP & NAESP, 2013; Ruairc et al., 2013; Lambert et al., 2002; Heller& Firestone, 1995; Booth and Ainscow, 2011; Leithwood et, al., 2012). Head Teachers are expected to create the conditions for a positive learning environment, academic rigor, and set the standard for inclusive education. Although successful school leadership is a high priority for education in the Caribbean (Miller, 2013), there appear to be tensions in relation to inclusion. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) largely supports The Dakar Framework for Action of Education for All (UNESCO, 2009), and their openness to the UNESCO Salamanca Statement for Action in 1994 is widely acknowledged. There have been reports indicating steady progression in educational leadership and inclusive practices within the last decade. However, no planned, long-term innovations have emerged (Commonwealth, Secretariat, 2012 & UNESCO, 2015; Riser, 2012). The aim of the study was to explore school leadership and Inclusive education in the Caribbean from the point of view and lived experience of a group of Head Teachers. A qualitative study was conducted with sixteen participants selected from among secondary schools across Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago. An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach- IPA was used (Smith, J. A.; Flowers, P. & Larkin, M. 2009), which explored how Head Teachers ascribe meaning to their unique, lived experiences and how this affects their role in facilitating inclusive education. This study has identified major misalignments between the requirements of the United Nations conventions regarding inclusion and the current focus of the Caribbean system of Education. In their efforts to maintain a student centred approach in leading their schools, the Head Teachers have been instrumental and innovative under uniquely challenging school circumstances. There is potential for the Caribbean schools' context to be seen as a place for the development of leadership that supports the process of inclusive education. However, the impression was that it would take major realignment of leadership perspectives, alongside trained, skilled expertise to be able to deliver meaningful support for inclusion.

A subjetividade do profissional da saúde pós-reestruturação produtiva

Gomes, Doris January 2013 (has links)
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem, Florianópolis, 2013. / Made available in DSpace on 2013-12-06T00:12:46Z (GMT). <br> / Abstract : The process of constructing the SUS in 1980/90 at the peak of productive restructuring in Brazil and after the welfare state in developed countries, types a strong intersection in reality of health between public and private interests. Ethics in the spaces of professional health performance, considering the different otherness, is a challenge in an environment pierced by a market ideology that links all aspects of contemporary life. Objective: To analyze the ethical problems found in the relationship-intersection of the public/private realities from the health professional?s perspective, post-productive restructuration in Brazil. Method: A qualitative research with an exploratory and descriptive approach, where 30 professionals (nurses, physicians and dentists) were interviewed in the metropolitan area of Florianópolis, with work experience in the private and public areas. Data analysis was made by using the method of the Textual Analysis discourse and the ATLAS.ti software was used in order to create the base units and categorizations. Results and Discussion: four mega-categories were considered; each of them represents a specific manuscript. The first, called "Public-private intersection: structural and ethical issues in the public-private relationship" ethical problems were shown in the restrictions on patient autonomy and in the social determinations. According to the professional?s perspective, they will do their best while dodging possible structural problems; the central issues were the completion of payment, quality/humanization versus secondary gain and technological resources. In the second manuscript the "commitment, ethics and moral suffering," were addressed while focusing on a transformation of the traditional "benefactor" commitment hard-pressed in the professional formation such as the differential among occupations. Bring to debate the role of the health professional as a moral subject, with varying degrees of commitment to the construction and protection of the "public welfare." The professional assumes "possible practices" to remain "minimally" affected by the ethics that16exist in the realities that convey ethical decision-making. Moral distress appears to be related to feelings of powerlessness in situations of determining the disease. In the third manuscript, the subjectivity of the health professional, post-productive restructuration, is crafted from the experience of a particular profession - odontology. The main findings relate to ethics in the inter-peer relationship; ethical problems and the private services (market competition, the reality of popular hospitals, covenants and dental plans); ethics and the ideal public service: the construction of excellence for public dentistry as a socially constructed need. The fourth manuscript focused on the relationship of a modern standard of productivity in the differentiated logistics for public/private interests and "productivity" as a synonym for quality, commitment and minimal ethics. Some issues were brought to the debate: to what extent can this "modern/stressor" pattern of productivity contribute to a positive ethical posture; and which alternative motivations could be thought towards necessary productivity in the public service combined with commitment, quality/humanization, minimal ethical and non-profit issues. Conclusions: Unveiling ethical problems at the intersection of the public/private health system in Brazil seems fundamental to the rescue work, as space formation and transformation of one?s self-training. The lack of commitment to each other as the fact of the modern world emerges and causes contradictory processes. The search for a human who does not look at himself as isolated, but as a person who thinks and who can build a difference in their work ethic, "socialized" and history-maker, seems significant to the building of quality and excellence in the public area. In odontology, a professional crisis proposes ethical problems: firstly, the market reinforces a sense of commercialism in the dental profession, building business settings with magnification in dentistry capitalizing on the realities of precarious work. Moreover, the unique actions of the dental professional in the public health system encourages a collective protagonist role in the search for excellence of work from new ethical-political and epistemological processes.
