FQPSK-L: An Improved Constant Envelope Modulation Scheme for QPSK

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / A new constant envelope modulation scheme and architecture for QPSK by cubic spline interpolation methods which increase spectral efficiency and power efficiency, named FQPSK-L, is presented. This modulation technique is an extension of the Feher Quadrature Shift Keying (FQPSK) patented technologies, see Ref [1]. Being a constant envelope modulation, FQPSK-L can operate with class C power amplifier without spectrum regrowth. We achieve a more compact spectrum with comparable bit error rate performance. For example, FQPSK-L is about 20% more spectral efficient than GMSK BTb=0.3 from 40 to 70 dB attenuation point. Moreover, FQPSK-L intrinsically has spikes at fc ± 0.5fb, fc ± 1.0fb, fc ± 1.5fb, ... which are useful for carrier recovery, symbol time recovery and fading compensation. In Rayleigh fading channel, FQPSK-L outperform GMSK BTb=0.3 by 0.8 dB. FQPSK-L is an excellent scheme for wireless and satellite communications which require high spectral and power efficiency.

FQPSK VERSUS PCM/FM FOR AERONAUTICAL TELEMETRY APPLICATIONS; SPECTRAL OCCUPANCY AND BIT ERROR PROBABILITY COMPARISONS

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The aeronautical telemetry community is investigating alternative modulation methods to the commonly used non-return-to-zero (NRZ) pulse code modulation (PCM)/frequency modulation (FM). This paper outlines the important characteristics being investigated. Measured data comparing the spectral occupancy and bit error probability (BEP) performance of PCM/FM with that of a prototype constant envelope Feher’s quadrature phase shift keying (FQPSK) modulator and demodulator will also be presented. Measured results in several radio frequency bands demonstrate that the 99.99% and -60 dBc bandwidths of filtered FQPSK are only approximately one-half of the corresponding bandwidths of optimized PCM/FM even when the signal is non-linearly amplified. The signal energy per bit to noise power spectral density (E /N ) required for a BEP of 1×10 b 0 -5 for non-optimized FQPSK was approximately 12 dB which is approximately the same as limiter discriminator detected PCM/FM.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT), Code 382 has been assigned as the program manager for a T&E version of the 21CLP system. The 21CLP vision is a common instrumentation function that links, in real-time, live land, air and maritime entities together with a virtual battlespace in any location where forces are deployed or being trained, weapons systems are being tested and evaluated, and ultimately where missions are being conducted. This vision will be realized with an embedded, mobile, distributed, untethered system that requires little or no site preparation.

Design and Development of a Framework for Traffic Management in a Global Manufacturing Enterprise: The American Standard Case Study

Managed Bandwidth Services (MBSs) use Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees to effectively control traffic flows and reduce network delay. In the past, the provision of MBS in a global manufacturing enterprise was a difficult task for network administrators. However, advances in recently emerging technologies, such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS), Integrated Services (IntServ), Differentiated Services (DiffServ), and Constraint-based Routing (CBR), hold promise to make MBS implementation more manageable. QoS technologies, such as DiffServ and IntServ, offer the benefits of better application performance and delivery of reliable network service. As a consequence of network traffic loads, packet congestion and latency increases still exist and must be addressed by enterprises that intend to support an MBS solution. In this investigation, the author addressed an issue that is faced by many large manufacturing enterprises, i.e., the addition of latency and congestion sensitive traffic such as Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) to networks with limited bandwidth. The goal of this research was to provide global manufacturing enterprises with a model for bandwidth management in their offices and plants. This model was based on findings from a case study of traffic management at American Standard Companies.

PARAMETRIC ESTIMATION OF THE SCATTERING FUNCTION FOR ARTM CHANNEL SOUNDING DATA

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Parameterized data from ARTM channel sounding test flights are used to derive a parameter-based estimate of the scattering function. The Doppler bandwidth and Doppler spread, important measures of channel dynamics, can be estimated from such a scattering function. Data collected from ARTM Flight 11 suggest that the Doppler bandwidth is larger than 6.7 Hz. Even for very small collections of parameterized data, surprising agreement is shown to non-parametric scattering function estimates. This confirms modeling assumptions and offers a way to achieve significant reductions of storage requirements.

The ultimate goal is to develop a small, modular telemetry system capable of high-speed detection of explosive events, with an accuracy on the order of 10 nanoseconds. The reliable telemetry of this data, from a high-speed missile trajectory, is a very challenging opportunity. All captured data must be transmitted in less than 20 microseconds of time duration. This requires a high bits/Hertz microwave telemetry modulation code to insure transmission of the data within the limited time interval available.

FQPSK-O: An Improved Performance Constant Envelope Modulation Scheme for OQPSK

This modulation technique is an extension of the Feher Quadrature Shift Keying (FQPSK) patented technologies, see Ref[l]. This scheme uses cubic spline interpolation to generate very smooth baseband waveforms in order to increase the spectral and power efficiency. Being a constant envelope modulation, FQPSK-O can operate with class C power amplifier without spectrum regrowth. We achieve a more compact spectrum with comparable bit error rate performance. For example, the spectrum of FQPSK-O is 25% narrower than that of GMSK with BT(b)=0.3 and FQPSK-1 with hardlimiter [2] at -40 dB attenuation point. For coherent demodulation under AWGN channel, FQPSK-O has almost the same BER performance as FQPSK-1 with hardlimiter. Both of them are better than GMSK with BT(b)=0.3 for BER < 10^-4. In Rayleigh fading channel, FQPSK-O outperforms GMSK with BT(b)=0.3 by 2 dB. FQPSK-O is an excellent scheme for wireless and satellite communications which require high spectral and power efficiency.

Localised routing algorithms with Quality of Service constraints : development and performance evaluation by simulation of new localised Quality of Service routing algorithms for communication networks using residual bandwidth and mean end-to-end delay as metrics

Localised QoS routing is a relatively new, alternative and viable approach to solve the problems of traditional QoS routing algorithms which use global state information resulting in the imposition of a large communication overhead and route flapping. They make use of a localised view of the network QoS state in source nodes to select paths and route flows to destination nodes. Proportional Sticky Routing (PSR) and Credit Based Routing (CBR) have been proposed as localised QoS routing schemes and these can offer comparable performances. However, since network state information for a specific path is only updated when the path is used, PSR and CBR operate with decision criteria that are often stale for paths that are used infrequently. The aim of this thesis is to focus on localised QoS routing and contribute to enhancing the scalability of QoS routing algorithms. In this thesis we have developed three new localised QoS routing schemes which are called Score Based QoS Routing (SBR), Bandwidth Based QoS Routing (BBR) and Delay Based Routing (DBR). In some of these schemes, the path setup procedure is distributed and uses the current network state to make decisions thus avoiding problems of staleness. The methods also avoid any complicated calculations. Both SBR and BBR use bandwidth as the QoS metric and mean delay is used as the QoS metric in DBR. Extensive simulations are applied to compare the performance of our proposed algorithms with CBR and the global Dijkstra's algorithm for different update intervals of link state, different network topologies and using different flow arrival distributions under a wide range of traffic loads. It is demonstrated by simulation that the three proposed algorithms offer a superior performance under comparable conditions to the other localised and global algorithms.

近幾年無線寬頻網路崛起,寄望WiMAX可以取代最後一哩,雖然WiMAX有QoS的設計,但是對於Call Admission Control、Bandwidth Allocation、Scheduler並沒有實際定義,給予廠商彈性設計。本篇論文提出以機器學習的方式依據網路狀態動態配置頻寬,以符合實際頻寬需求。 由於BS在配置頻寬的時候並沒有SS佇列的訊息,使得BS無法配置適合的頻寬,達到較好的效能,尤其是有期限的rtPS封包最為明顯。在系統負載較高的環境下,容易導致封包遺失提升,吞吐量降低的情形發生。因此本研究提出了支持向量機的方式,收集大量Training Data,訓練成動態頻寬配置模組;以動態配置適合的頻寬給rtPS,使rtPS在負載高的環境下的封包遺失率降低,且延遲能夠維持一定水準。搭配適應性頻寬配置策略,在低負載的環境下可以保留少許頻寬給Non Real Time Traffic,在高負載環境下,先滿足Real Time Traffic為原則。模擬工具採用NS 2-2.29、長庚大學-資策會的WiMAX模組,以及台大林智仁老師開發的支持向量機函式庫libSVM。 / In recent years, the rise of wireless broadband access networks. In this paper, we proposed a machine learning approach dynamic bandwidth allocation based on network state. BS because of the bandwidth allocation at a time when there is no message of SS’s queue. Enables BS can not configure a more suitable bandwidth to achieve better performance. In particular, there is the deadline of rtPS packets. At the higher loading on the system environment, easily lead to packet loss raise, lower throughput situations happen. In this study, a support vector machine approach to collect a large number of training data. Training modules into a dynamic bandwidth allocation. We can dynamically allocate bandwidth to fit rtPS. Adaptive bandwidth allocation strategy, at the low loading environment can keep some bandwidth for non real time traffic. At a high loading environment must first meet the real time traffic. We use Network Simulator 2-2.29, CGU-III WiMAX module, libSVM library.

Adaptive notch filtering for tracking multiple complex sinusoid signals

This thesis is related to the field of digital signal processing; where the aim of this research is to develop features of an infinite impulse response adaptive notch filter capable of tracking multiple complex sinusoid signals. Adaptive notch filters are commonly used in: Radar, Sonar, and Communication systems, and have the ability to track the frequencies of real or complex sinusoid signals; thus removing noise from an estimate, and enhancing the performance of a system. This research programme began by implementing four currently proposed adaptive notch structures. These structures were simulated and compared: for tracking between two and four signals; however, in their current form they are only capable of tracking real sinusoid signals. Next, one of these structures is developed further, to facilitate the ability to track complex sinusoid signals. This original structure gives superior performance over Regalia's comparable structure under certain conditions, which has been proven by simulations and results. Complex adaptive notch filter structures generally contain two parameters: the first tracks a target frequency, then the second controls the adaptive notch filter's bandwidth. This thesis develops the notch filter, so that the bandwidth parameter can be adapted via a method of steepest ascent; and also investigates tracking complex-valued chirp signals. Lastly, stochastic search methods are considered; and particle swarm optimisation has been applied to reinitialise an adaptive notch filter, when tracking two signals; thus more quickly locating an unknown frequency, after the frequency of the complex sinusoid signal jumps.
