The Teacher Cadet Program: Qualitative Insights in Sequence and Scope

Lewis, Patsy 16 May 2014 (has links)
The Teacher Cadet Program began in South Carolina as a means of introducing high school students to the career of teaching. Although implemented in 1986, little research exists about the perspectives of stakeholders in the Teacher Cadet Program. The purpose of this research study was to explore the participants' perspectives concerning the structure and experiences offered in the TCP and describe how those experiences influenced college and career decisions. This qualitative case study investigated how 46 Teacher Cadet participants in a rural public high school perceived their experiences in the Teacher Cadet Program. The study also examined the stories of four participants who represented each of the groups studied. Data collection methods included survey information, interviews, and focus group discussions analyzed using a constant-comparative approach. Focusing on a single site allowed the researcher to explore the stories of program participants and uncovered three elements they viewed as the most important characteristics of the program: the contributions of hands-on experiences, the significance of early exposure to the field of teaching, and the importance of the relationships that were established. Study results provided a framework for understand in the affects of the Teacher Cadet Program on participants. The findings documented overall positive perceptions. This study added to the body of knowledge about the perspectives of stakeholder in the Teacher Cadet Program in regards to the value participants placed on their experiences and subsequently how those experiences influenced their career and college plans.

The torch and the sword : a history of the army cadet movement in Australia 1866-2004

Stockings, Craig, Humanities & Social Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to provide a general history of the army cadet movement in Australia from 1866 to 2004 by tracing the interactions between four fundamental forces that have stood as its foundation for almost 140 years. In various guises military, educational, social, and financial factors are the pillars on which the cadet movement has always rested. Over time the balance and relative dominance of each has determined the shape and state of the cadet organisation and will continue to do so in the future. When these four forces have been aligned the movement has thrived but when they have pulled in disparate directions it has faltered. Throughout the thesis, contextualising these four key concepts, are two more general themes concerning the influence of conservative politics and a recurring state school/private school divide. The history of army cadets, and therefore this thesis, is an investigation into the interplay of these dynamics. With such a purpose and methodology the thesis begins by tracing the development of the movement from its nineteenth century origins by identifying issues and circumstances that led some colonies to maintain thousands of cadets while others struggled to field any. It goes on to examine the formation, five years after Federation, of a Commonwealth cadet scheme birthed only to be swamped by the era of compulsory military training in Australia from 1911-29 which saw, at its peak, almost 100,000 schoolboys in khaki. The thesis analyses the re-organised voluntary cadet system in place from 1930-38 which, matching the circumstances of the adult army, faltered in numbers and support as it was restructured into dual 'Regimental' and 'School' branches. It goes on to assess the impact of the Second World War and the renewed impetus it provided to the cadet organisation before investigating the prosperity of the movement throughout the 1950s and 1960s in spite of the complexities raised by National Service and Australian involvement in conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Malaya and Borneo. Particular attention is paid to the early 1970s and the machinations surrounding the unexpected decision to disband the cadet organisation announced by the Labor government on 26 August 1975. The cadet story does not conclude at this point, however, with Vice Regal controversy and a subsequent Liberal-National election victory resurrecting the movement. The re-styled cadet scheme of 1976-83 is investigated followed by twelve years of division and distress under consecutive Labor federal governments between 1984-95. The thesis concludes by examining the reversal of fortunes for the movement from 1996-2004 which saw the cadet system develop, by the end of the period, into a well led, resourced and motivated organisation of almost 17,000 members. The research informing this thesis is based on documents held in National Archives of Australia offices in all state capitals, as well as those held in the Australian War Memorial. In addition, all state public record offices have yielded significant material, as have a wide range of private and school-based archives. More recent primary source information has been gathered from sources within the Department of Defence Archives, Queanbeyan, NSW, while select active and closed files from Headquarters Australian Army Cadets and the Directorate of Defence Force Cadets were graciously provided to the author. The study has also been informed by a wide selection of official, privately published and unpublished secondary sources spanning more than a century.

Oskarsson, Erik January 2011 (has links)
What this paper aims to investigate is what attitude cadets and their families have for overseasservice and what this may be due to. Other issues presented is if those who performed serviceabroad before they started officers training had experienced any negative personality changes(after their service and if their relatives have seen any changes after the service). There is noprior research in the area that focus on cadets and their relative’s stance on overseas servicehence this essay is a limited, but an important contribution. A discussion concerns how thenew kind of officers is likely to reflect on these issues. The findings indicate that the cadets in OP 08-11 view their relatives' as an important part oftheir motivation for service abroad, and that most of the cadets welcome a future overseasservice. The relatives on the other hand, does not share this positive view, in fact, the vastmajority of the cadets relatives have an attitude that is negative.

The predictive validity of a psychological test battery for the selection of cadet pilots in a commercial airline

Mnguni, Vusumuzi Quirion 03 1900 (has links)
Commercial airlines need to employ well qualified pilots to run their core business. The current supply from privately and military qualified pilots is proving to be inadequate. A further challenge facing the airline is having to attempt to reflect the diversity of the country in its workforce. The present study investigated the predictive validity of a psychological test battery for cadet pilots. The predictors that were included in the research are: biographical data, ABET levels in terms of English and Matric results, as well as results from psychological tests, namely: English literacy skills assessment (ELSA), Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RMP), Blox test, subtests of the Intermediate Battery (B/77) viz: Arithmetic 1 and 2, and Reading Comprehension, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The objective of the research was to determine the predictive validity of the selection battery utilizing the final flying school results as the criteria. The results of the research were inconclusive. Only some of the tests showed positive correlations with the modules of the flying school results. The Ravens Progressive Matrices, Blox, Matriculation English symbol, ABET levels and Reading Comprehension, were found to have predictive power with some of the modules of the flying school results based on the regression analysis. It is recommended that a revised profile for a commercial airline pilot should be developed, as well as that the critical skills and competencies should be identified to enable the airlines to utilize appropriate and relevant assessment tools to select prospective candidates, particularly among the previously disadvantaged communities. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Students’ perceptions of the campus climate for academic integrity and ethics: a comparison of military cadets and civilian-college students

Williams, Jeremy Lloyd 01 May 2018 (has links)
This study of perceptions of campus climate for Personal and Social Responsibility (PSR) evaluated the extent to which observable differences existed among campuses that had or did not have military cadets as their primary student population. Specifically, it looked at civilian colleges and universities and collegiate military academies such as the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) and the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs (USAFA). The data sample for this study came from civilian-college students and cadets enrolled in 23 colleges and universities (which included USMA and USAFA) that were chosen by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to participate in the Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory (PSRI) during the 2007-08 school year. I measured the outcomes in this study by controlling for personal pre-college characteristics (i.e., highest level of parent’s education, race, gender, age, religious preference), structural variables of interest (i.e., campus size, campus selectivity, student class year, whether the school has a traditional honor code in place, whether the school is a military academy), and experience variables of interest (i.e., faculty/student interactions, meaningful discussions, public advocacy, efficacy of a judicial process). Results from this study revealed that cadets had an overall higher perception of campus climate for PSR than college students did. Cadets also had unique and positive communications with military academy educators compared to communications between civilian-college students and civilian educators. Finally, both student and cadet perceptions of PSR seemed to decrease as they progressed in class year.

Alatalo, Marcus January 2014 (has links)
I undersökningen intervjuades tio sjökaptensstudenter. / The purpose of this research is to find out how students, graduating from the Master Mariners programme, look at their own leadership style from their experiences from their cadet training period, their earlier work experience and from their acquired knowledge from the course in leadership which is included in the programme. The method used for this research is qualitative, with semi-structured interviews and literature studies. Ten Master Mariner students were interviewed for this research. An interview guide was used, as support to the interviewer, during the interviews. The answers from the interviews were analyzed theoretically on three classical leadership styles; authoritarian, democratic and passive. As regards to the cadet training period and earlier work experience, the result shows that the Master Mariner students regard their own leadership style as to be one that corresponds mostly with a democratic and partly with an authoritarian leadership style. The students think, from their acquired knowledge from the course in leadership, that it is important to be able to adjust one’s leadership according to the situation and to be flexible in one’s leadership style. The result seems to indicate that the flexibility in one’s leadership style lies between a democratic and an authoritarian leadership style.
