Can a house be a product? This thesis sets out to form a set of basic elements for a minimum house in light of this question that is both functional and aesthetic. The goal is to develop an efficient prefabricated system of construction analogous to a chart of chemical elements. The modular system is then applied to the most basic footprint for a house - a 400 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). Through studying the fundamental parts of a house, a level of understanding emerges, which allows for a projection of the idea as a whole. The ideal of prefabrication posits the possibility of architecture as a system. This idea has attracted architects for decades, despite what appears to be an inherent tension between architecture as a system and the poetic iconicity of the house as a type. A study of the systemic introduced by considerations of prefabrication can offer a deeper understanding of the complex nature of architecture. Finally, can the essence of architecture endure amidst the necessary limitations of factory production and manufacturing in our post-industrial age? / Master of Architecture / This thesis consists of a system-generated 400 square foot prefabricated house, a catalog of the house's elements, an expanded catalog of small houses, and a series of studies conducted while traveling through Europe and upon return. The system utilizes a series of functional pods and frames the 'served' with panelized elemental compounds such as walls, floors, and roofs to meet the programmatic requirements of a house. By applying this limited catalog, the feasibility of production can be explored through an expanded catalog. Ultimately, the whole must be greater than the sum of its parts; through tectonic articulation, functional clarity and an additive approach, this can be achieved while meeting the strict constraints that prefabrication demands.

Given that a construction site is both temporary and unique, the outcome of every construction project is dependent upon having all of the proper resources delivered to the site at the appropriate time. Although this is common knowledge in the construction industry, late deliverables to the site continue to be a major impediment to project success. In order to better understand late deliverables and their impacts on performance, the Construction Industry Institute, in collaboration with the Construction Users Roundtable, commissioned Research Team (RT) 300 to investigate how various types of late deliverables affect the cost, schedule, quality, safety, and organizational performance of industrial construction projects. Using case studies, industry surveys and questionnaires, existing literature, and internal team expertise, RT 300 developed two research thrusts: investigate how the industry understands, manages, and is affected by late deliverables, and document and give visibility to the true risks and impacts associated with late deliverables. When examining how late deliverables affect the construction industry, RT 300 found that (1) there is limited understanding of the full range of late deliverables and their far-reaching impacts, (2) the most common late deliverables tend to have the most severe impacts on projects, (3) project teams are typically reactionary when managing late deliverables, (4) project stakeholders have varying perceptions of the risks and impacts associated with late deliverables, and (5) proactively managing late deliverables and impacts is key for improvement in the industry. With these findings and the second research thrust in mind, RT 300 created a database tool, the Late Deliverable Risk Catalog (LDRC), to document common types of late deliverables, give visibility to the full range of impacts, and help project teams recognize risks, improve alignment, and proactively manage late deliverables and mitigate the impacts. RT 300 has also developed implementation recommendations for the LDRC, prevention recommendations for the highest risk deliverables, and lessons learned in managing late deliverables. Altogether, this research can help improve the understanding of late deliverables and resulting impacts and risks in order to improve project delivery, productivity, and predictability as well as enhance safety, quality, and organizational and individual performance. / text

Pretende-se analisar o mercado contemporâneo de livros de bolso a partir de quatro coleções, duas brasileiras e duas francesas: L&PM Pocket, da L± Companhia de Bolso, da Companhia das Letras; Le Livre de Poche, da Librairie Générale Française; e Folio, da Gallimard. Investiga-se a materialidade dos livros, com destaque para os seus formatos, capas, paginação e elementos pré e pós-textuais. À luz da Histoire du livre francesa e da Bibliografia, as características editoriais são discutidas em sua historicidade, apontando as condições sociais e econômicas que permitiram o seu surgimento e desenvolvimento em cada época e país abordado. Em uma perspectiva comparativa, as conquistas e deficiências das coleções brasileiras são debatidas em relação ao modelo francês, com suas coleções mais antigas e consolidadas há décadas. Deste modo, propõe-se testar duas hipóteses: de que o mercado nacional vive um período de diversificação, com títulos que não se resumem a bestsellers e/ou clássicos da literatura; e que, assim como ocorreu na Europa na metade do século XX, as coleções de bolso têm se aproximado do público universitário. Conclui-se que embora as coleções brasileiras ainda não apresentem a mesma variedade de séries e títulos que as francesas e não respondam por uma fatia expressiva do consumo de livros no país, elas têm se expandido e recorrido a medidas e estratégias similares às adotadas pelas principais coleções dos países que utilizamos como referência. / Brazilian and two French: L&PM Pocket, from L± Companhia de Bolso, from Companhia das Letras; Le Livre de Poche, from Librairie Générale Française; e Folio, from Gallimard. It investigates the materiality of the books, highlighting its formats, covers, pagination and pre and post-textual elements. In the light of the Histoire du livre and the Bibliography, editorial features are discussed in their historicity, pointing to the social and economic conditions that allowed their emergence and development in every time and country approached. In a comparative perspective, the achievements and shortcomings of Brazilian collections are discussed in comparison to the French model, with its oldest and consolidated collections. Thus, it is proposed to test two hypotheses: that the domestic market is experiencing a period of diversification, with titles that are not just the best-selling and / or classical literature; and, as occurred in Europe in the mid-twentieth century, the paperback collections have been conquered university readers. We conclude that although the Brazilian collections still do not have the same variety of French series and titles and not account for a significant share of book consumption in the country, they have expanded and resorted to measures and strategies similar to those adopted by the major collections from the set of countries we used as a reference.

O presente relato inicia com a proposta de um modelo de análise funcional do comportamento em situação natural, o qual teria como fase primeira a realização de um estudo descritivo do comportamento. É feita uma revisão da literatura no que se refere a: descrição das circunstâncias em que os comportamentos ocorrem e das técnicas de registro a serem utilizadas, delimitação de unidades e definição de categorias de comportamento e elaboração de um catálogo. Este último item constitui-se no objetivo do presente trabalho: a elaboração de um catálogo de comportamentos motores de pais e filhos pequenos durante a situação de refeição. Foram sujeitos do estudo quatro famílias, em que a idade das crianças observadas varia entre um ano e seis meses e quatro anos e quatro meses. De comportamento foram anotados através da técnica de registro contínuo. São relatadas diferentes tentativas de elaboração do catálogo, discutindo-se os problemas surgidos em cada uma dessas tentativas. O catálogo a que se chegou consta de 129 verbos definidos e codificados e de uma relação dos termos da oração devem ser registrados juntamente com cada um desses verbos. As definições dos verbos estão escritas sob a forma de uma contingência de três termos. São também apresentados diagramas - que indicam a ligação existente entre os verbos, uma vez que eles são definidos quase sempre pela menção a outros verbos também definidos no presente catálogo. Nas considerações finais do trabalho, discute-se a possibilidade de adaptação desse catálogo a situações diferentes, mencionam-se algumas formas de utilização do mesmo e é proposta uma sequência padrão de atividades para a elaboração de um catálogo. / A functional behavioral analyses model in natural settings is proposed in which the first step is a descriptive study of behavior. The literature is review specifically in terms of: description of circumstances where behaviors occur and of recording techniques to be used; the limiting of behavior units and the definition of behavior categories; and the construction of a behavior catalogue. The objective of the present study was to construct a catalogue of motor behaviors of parents and children during the meal time situation. The subjects were four families, with children age ranging from one year six months to four years four months. Behavior was recorded by means of the continuous recording technique. Different attempts to construct the catalogue are reported as well as the problems evolved in each attempt. The resulting catalogue comprises 129 defined and coded verbs and a list of terms to be recorded together with each verb. The verb definitions are written under form of a three term contingency. Diagrams representing the relationship between verbs are presented because the verbs are almost always defined with reference to other verbs also defined in the present catalogue. The possibility to adept this catalogue to different situations is discussed and the author indicates some uses for it. A pattern sequence of activities to construct a catalogue is proposed.

Esta dissertação de mestrado apresenta um catálogo organizado dos artefatos guarani que se encontram, atualmente, na reserva técnica do Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia da Universidade de São Paulo, provenientes do Museu Paulista (MP) e do Acervo Plinio Ayrosa (APA). O objetivo principal é viabilizar a divulgação das coleções etnográficas para os Guarani, coletadas em diferentes aldeias e períodos, por diversos coletores. Com isso, pretende-se não apenas reconstituir a \"biografia do objeto\", como também fornecer dados para adensar as trajetórias históricas dos grupos Guarani. No entanto, a elaboração do catálogo prescinde de uma investigação sobre as representações ameríndias elaboradas em museus e baseadas em objetos, que reificaram certas imagens em circulação até os dias de hoje. Se, no século XIX, os habitantes da América eram representados como extintos, em vias de extinção ou com sinais visíveis de degenerescência, no século XXI, numa reviravolta histórica, os povos ameríndios criaram suas próprias representações e objetos, apropriando-se dos museus como espaços de mobilização pelos direitos e de reconstrução de suas próprias trajetórias, lutas, memórias e identidades. / This master\'s thesis presents an organized catalog of Guarani artifacts that are currently in the technical reserve of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of the University of São Paulo, from the Paulista Museum (MP) and the Plinio Ayrosa Collection (APA). The main objective is to enable the dissemination of ethnographic collections to the Guarani, collected in different villages and periods, by various collectors. With this, it is intended not only to reconstruct the \"biography of the object\", but also to provide data to add to the historical trajectories of the Guarani groups. However, the elaboration of the Catalog precludes an investigation into Amerindian representations made in museums and based on objects, which have reified certain images in circulation to the present day. If, in the nineteenth century, the inhabitants of America were represented as extinct, on the verge of extinction or with visible signs of degeneracy, in the twenty-first century, in a historical turnaround, the Amerindian peoples created their own representations and objects, appropriating museums as spaces of mobilization for rights and reconstruction of their own trajectories, struggles, memories and identities.

Apresento o desenvolvimento das etapas a partir de trabalho sobre manuscritos que conduziram à atual ressignificação e elaboração de novas imagens. Destaco o relevante papel da rasura. Em suas diferentes apresentações, significado e função é presença constante em meus trabalhos. / The dissertation approaches the subject of providing (re) significations to manuscripts and texts from an archive leading to the cataloging and deciphering of contents from the standpoint of texts taken as image. I am tabling a document that shows the development of the various phases of this work on manuscripts. They give rise to those new significations and new pieces of work coming from these results. The use of the erasure should be underlined. In various forms of presentation, meaning and function the erasure is a constant presence along my body of work.

Nesse ambiente se tem como objetivo avaliar um conjunto de diretrizes de usabilidade e aplicá-las em sistemas de recuperação de informação na Web, levando em consideração aspectos relativos não só à usabilidade de sua interface, mas também à sua eficiência no processo de recuperação. O estudo se caracteriza como exploratório e descritivo-analítico. Para tanto, procurou-se inicialmente revisar a literatura nacional e internacional sobre recuperação de informação e usabilidade, em várias fontes informacionais, impressas e eletrônicas, como embasamento teórico do trabalho. Em segunda etapa, foi realizada uma análise heurística, e por último foram realizados testes de usabilidade com usuários em que se aplicaram dois procedimentos: um questionário semi-estruturado e um instrumento de observação. Após as análises quantitativa e qualitativa dos dados, o teste com os usuários possibilitou verificar o modo como eles interagem com a interface do Catálogo Athena e as formas de busca que costumam realizar em outras ferramentas disponíveis na Web. Também foi possível validar alguns apontamentos feitos na análise heurística, pois a maioria dos participantes da pesquisa revelou não ter qualquer experiência na utilização do Catálogo Athena. Verifica-se, nesta pesquisa, a importância de se aplicar os testes com usuários em ambientes de recuperação de informação, considerando-os como parte fundamental no desenvolvimento de qualquer sistema. / Abstract: The research conducts a study about a specific catalog, the Athena, considered a system of retrieval of information structured and organized. In this environment you have to evaluate a set of guidelines for usability and apply them in systems for retrieval of information on the Web, taking into account aspects relating not only to the usability of its interface, but also its efficiency in the recovery process. The study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive and analytical. Thus, it was initially to review the national and international literature on recovery of information and usability in various informational sources, printed and electronic, as the theoretical work. In the second stage, was a heuristic analysis, and finally usability tests were carried out with users that were applied in two procedures: a semi-structured questionnaire and an instrument of observation. After the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, the test allows users to determine how they interact with the interface of the Athena Catalog and the forms of search that usually take place in other tools available on the Web was also possible to validate some notes made in heuristic analysis, because the majority of the research has shown to have no experience in the use of Athena Catalog. This research shows the importance of applying the tests with users in environments of retrieval of information, considering them a vital part in the development of any system. / Mestre
