A conversão de D. José Brandão de Castro : a ação social de mediadores religiosos na Diocese de Propriá / Social action of the religious mediators

Pruth, Alex January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation looked for to study the charisma of the religious mediator us " Movements of Christianity of Liberation " in the Diocese Sergipana of Propriá, during the decade from sixty to eighty. Centering our debate in the understanding of the social action, we have as main subject to understand the " poor " influence in the adoption of actions on the part of the mediators, in that public's favor, mainly in Fazenda Betume conflicts (1974) and of Santana dos Frades (1979). The hypotheses, we became pregnant that the mediators as D. José Brandão de Castro and the nun Maria Joana Hermínia exercised an important influence in the construction of the identity of the movements as CEBs, MEB and CPT in the area. Such influence was motivated by a conversion of the mediator D. Brandão, constituted starting from a relationship maintained between him and the members of the movements and proportionate for the critics and demands done by the popular ones. They resulted in actions in favor of the rural ones, what characterized the Church of Propriá as allied of the involved in the conflicts and no mere middleman. Before the collected material, we made use of the Analysis of Content using the poor " term " as analysis category, complemented by interviews done to members of the mentioned movements.

Andersson, Pernilla, Thioubou, Banna January 2009 (has links)
ABSTRACT Authors: Andersson Pernilla, Thioubou Banna   Title:  Communication and types of leadership: an example from the Swedish Military Organisation   Level:  BA Thesis in Media and Communication Studies   Key words:  Leadership, charisma, directorship/manager, leader, communication   Purpose: The aim with this study  entitled "communication and leadership: an example from the Swedish military organisation”, was to get better insight about leadership and communication in the Swedish army. In this purpose, we used organisational theories as well as communication theories to illustrate and support our study and statements.   Method: our empirical data was based on a qualitative study but we even carried out a quantitative study, since a survey had been made. The purpose with the survey was to get, from people chosen randomly in the city of Kalmar, opinions and thoughts about leadership and communication in the Swedish army. We even did some deep interviews with former and present officers in Swedish army, in order to develop our study.   Results: At the end of our study we were able to say that there were different types of leadership, depending on the type of organisation. The Swedish army has a distinct structure when it comes to leadership and communication. However, even if the structure is based on a hierarchical pyramid, meaning that all the final decisions are the prerogative of the commanders, it is more and more common to initiate dialogue in this organisation. The lack of knowledge and prejudices are the main reasons why the Swedish military organisation is not well known. Another reason, based on the results from our survey, might be the lack of external communication from the army’s side.   Number of pages:  60 plus appendix Program: Program for International Communications University: Kalmar University Institution: Institution of Communication and Design Period: Spring 2009 Examiner: Sara Hamqvist Tutor: Britt-Marie Ringfjord

Leading with words : Leadership rhetoric in modern organizations

Kihlgren, Maria January 2010 (has links)
Within the business world, there are many examples of more or less successful leadership, but it is not always clear why some leaders are more effective than others. However, it is reasonable to believe that leaders’ successful usage of rhetoric can inspire an entire company and provide the followers with a sense of meaning and purpose, and that this will inspire them to perform towards the leader’s vision.   This thesis explores how successful business leaders apply rhetoric in their leadership. This is done trough a deductive research strategy, which means that the research is grounded in general theory. The theory is then compared to real cases in order to examine similar patterns in reality. Relevant leadership- and rhetoric theory have been applied to speeches preformed by successful business leaders to explore how they use rhetoric in their leadership.   The results suggest that successful business leaders use rhetoric in numerous ways when engaging followers towards accomplishment of their vision, such as classical speech disposition, vision articulation, frame alignment, change rhetoric, and a combination of speech content and delivery. Hence, the skilful use of rhetoric is evidently a critical component of successful leadership.

An exploration into the vision and visioning activity of leaders /

Beauchamp, Julie January 2003 (has links)
The concepts of transformational and charismatic leadership have led to a variety of leadership behaviors and practices that seek to enhance followers' motivation to perform beyond expectations, by changing their values, goals, needs and aspirations at work. One such activity, which has gained momentum and interest in recent years, is the dissemination of a vision. This thesis is an attempt to investigate the nature of the visioning process in organizational leadership through theoretical analysis and empirical investigation. / An analysis of the visioning process yielded two important components: the visioning activity and the visioning product. Based on this analysis and a review of the existing literature, vision was defined as a product with content and the visioning activity a two-stage process involving vision formulation and vision articulation. Building on these definitions, a number of vision content characteristics and visioning behaviors were examined, leading to theoretical propositions and testable hypotheses. / The empirical test of the proposed theoretical framework was carried out in two studies. Study 1 investigated observers' perceptions of leader behaviors, vision content characteristics and related attributions of vision and visionary leadership. This study was conducted using analyses of biographical and autobiographical accounts. Study 2 sought to replicate the investigation with direct observations from followers of "real-life" organizational leaders. / The empirical test substantiated the importance of distinguishing between the various content characteristics of visions as they relate to attributions of vision and visionary leadership on the part of observers/followers. The empirical results also support the importance of distinguishing between the various components of the visioning activity of leaders as they relate to attributions of vision and visionary leadership on the part of observers/followers. Finally, the results suggest distinct relationships between the attributions of vision/visionary leadership and various effects of the visioning process on followers. / In light of these results, suggestions for future research and implications for leadership practice are discussed.

Charisma: a study in the forcefulness of the individual in society

Schroeder, Kaeleigh 10 September 2010 (has links)
The concept of charisma, while gaining greater usage in contemporary society, is under-researched and often misused. This thesis discusses the classical theoretical conception of charisma, beginning with Max Weber, and provides three empirical illustrations of charismatic leadership in the fields of religion, politics, and the media.

Social Change and Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique: A Study of the Charismatic Author-Leader

Morgan, Joanne January 2002 (has links)
In this thesis I explore the significance of the publication of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique (1963) to the emergence of the second wave Womens Liberation Movement in the US in the late 1960s. To this end, I deploy key concepts provided through social movement theory (eg collective identity, collective action frames, social problem construction). I also incorporate Max Weber and Antonio Gramscis insights on the indispensable role played by leaders who demonstrate a clear and effective political will. Webers three part model of pure charisma is used as a general template for understanding the impact of Friedans text. I critique aspects of Webers theory of charisma, in particular his failure to appreciate that the written word can mark the initial emergence phase of charisma rather than its routinisation. I augment Webers insights on charismatic leadership by attending to Gramscis emphasis on the necessity of winning the war of ideas that must be waged at the level of civil society within advanced capitalist societies. I examine Gramscis understanding of the power available to the organic intellectual who is aligned with the interests of subaltern groups and who succeeds in revealing the hegemonic commitments of accepted common sense. In the latter part of this thesis, I apply these many useful concepts to my case study analysis of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique. I argue that Friedans accessible, middlebrow text gave birth to a new discursive politics which was critically important not only for older women, but for a younger generation of more radicalised women. I emphasise how Friedans text mounted a concerted attack on the discursive construction of femininity under patriarchal capitalism. I question Friedans diagnostic claim that the problems American women faced were adequately captured by the terminology of the trapped housewife syndrome. I conclude by arguing that social movement researchers have to date failed to appreciate the leadership potential of the charismatic author-leader who succeeds in addressing and offering a solution to a pressing social problem through the medium of a best-selling, middlebrow text.
