Gender und Charismatischer Führungsdiskurs. Dekonstruktion einer (un)möglichen Verbindung.

In dieser Arbeit wird analysiert, ob der im Alltag beobachtbare Zusammenhang von "Geschlecht" und "Führung" auf einer Metaebene ebenfalls besteht. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der impliziten Geschlechterkonstruktionen der (Neo)charismatischen Führungstheorien mit den Werkzeugen der Dekonstruktion und der Diskursanalyse. Ausgehend von den Inhalten der Feministischen Theorie wird ein Beitrag dazu geleistet, die Charismatischen Führungstheorien als von vergeschlechtlichten Strukturen durchgezogenes Feld sichtbar zu machen. Gegenstand der dekonstruktivistischen Analyse sind ausgewählte Texte der (Neo)charismatischen Führungstheorien. Diese Texte werden in Hinblick auf den Einbruch der Kategorie "Geschlecht" auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen bearbeitet werden. Die konkreten Ebenen der Auseinandersetzung werden von den Forschungsfragen abgegrenzt. Diese Ebenen sind zum einen die Ebene der Repräsentation und der sprachlichen Darstellung von Frauen und zum anderen die Ebene der geschlechtsstereotypen Eigenschaften sowie die Ebene der geschlechtlichen Konstruktion der Archetypen. Als konkrete Texte werden verschiedene Texte herangezogen, welche die Charismatische Theorie als solche prägen und einen guten Überblick über die Schwerpunkte der Theorie bieten. (Autorinnenref.)

Vårt syfte med studien var att undersöka om det fanns något samband mellan karismatiska lärare och motiverade studenter. Enligt våra hypoteser skulle vi finna ett positivt samband mellan karisma och motivation. Vi gjorde en enkätundersökning på ett universitet i en mellanstor stad i Sverige. Deltagarna bestod av 172 universitetsstudenter. Enkäten mätte lärarens karisma och studenternas motivation och engagemang. Resultatet visade att det fanns ett starkt positivt samband mellan karismatiska lärare och motiverade studenter. Sammanfattningsvis tenderar studenter som uppfattar sin lärare som karismatisk att vara motiverade och engagerade. Det speglar de teorier och den forskning som visar att karismatiska människor har en positiv inverkan på andra människor. / The purpose with this study was to investigate if there was a relation between charismatic teachers and motivated students. According to our hypothesis, there should be a positive relation between charisma and motivation. We conducted a survey at a university in a medium-sized town in Sweden. The participants consisted of 172 university students. The questionnaire was designed to measure teacher´s charisma and students´ motivation and engagement. The results showed a strong positive relation between charismatic teachers and motivated students. In summary, students who perceive their teachers as charismatic tend to be motivated and engaged. It reflects the theories and research saying that charismatic people have a positive impact on other people.

The Anuvrat Movement: Theory and Practice

The slogan: “Self-restraint is life,” forms the philosophical ideal behind the Anuvrat Movement. The purpose of my thesis is to evaluate the Anuvrat Movement introduced by Acharya Tulsi as a non-sectarian, ethical-spiritual movement. The study considered in some detail the historical context within which the movement emerged. The thesis provides a much-needed analysis of the 11 vows formulated by Tulsi in the model of the traditional vows in Jainism. It explored the question whether these vows are relevant and effective in the contemporary Indian society, and whether Tulsi’s movement can cross the geographical boundaries of the Indian sub-continent to be a part of larger global initiatives. The study explored the social significance of the concepts of nonviolence, social justice and sustainability in the wider global community. The study suggests a positive association between the exemplary charismatic role of a leader and the popularity and longevity of social movements in India.

Incorporating implicit leadership theories into the transformational and transactional leadership framework

The role of implicit leadership theories within the framework of transformational and transactional leadership theory were examined. Two major issues were how implicit leadership theories (i.e., good, neutral, poor leader prototype) relate to specific leader behaviors (attributed charisma, idealized influence, individualized consideration, inspirational leadership, contingent reward, management-by-exception active/passive, laissez-faire leadership), and the combined influence of leader prototypes and behaviors on general job satisfaction, satisfaction with supervision, turnover intentions, and extra effort. Results were inconclusive with regard to the notion that leader prototypes and transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leader behaviors are exemplified by a nonrecursive relation. Leader prototypes and specific behaviors combined to influence work outcomes in either a full or partial mediation framework. Most often, the specific behaviors had a strong, direct influence on work outcomes. Leader prototypes indirectly influenced outcomes through the mediation of specific leader behaviors. The results are discussed in terms of the theoretical and practical benefits of actively incorporating implicit leadership theories into the transformational and transactional leadership framework, as well as the theoretical frameworks of other existing leadership models. It is argued that such an approach would result in a greater understanding of the leader-follower relationship and the overall leadership influence process. / Ph. D.

Channeling charisma: leadership, community and ritual of a Catholic charismatic prayer group in the United States

This ethnographic study examines the organizational structure, formation of community and ritual performance of a Catholic charismatic prayer group in the United States. Heavily influenced by the Protestant Pentecostal movement, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) began as a grassroots movement among the Catholic laity in the late 1960s and proposed a personal connection with God through "baptism in the Holy Spirit" and reception of "charisms," spiritual gifts, such as glossolalia (speaking in tongues), healing and prophesying. Earlier studies suggested that such groups would fade out due to the inherent tension with Catholic institutions. Nevertheless, this dissertation presents the case study of a rapidly growing Catholic charismatic group at the suburbs of Boston, with a charismatic leader who is also a priest. The research methods include participant observation of all the meetings, retreats, and rituals, formal and informal interviews of the leader, his clerical associates and members, and review of the groups' publications and the leader's own radio program, during a period of twenty months from December 2001 to August 2003. I have also visited and interviewed priests and lay people of non-charismatic Catholic churches and two Protestant Pentecostal churches in the greater Boston area. Building upon Max Weber's theory of charisma, this dissertation examines how the charismatic leader maximizes his authority by integrating both personal and institutional charisma. The vertical ties the community members cultivate with the leader and the horizontal ties they establish among themselves through narratives of conversion and healing experience reinforce group cohesion and resilience. By analyzing ritual language and bodily movement, this study argues that ritual is a communication system in which the charisma of the leader and the religious experience of the followers are embodied. This study of the actual workings of a charismatic group within the hierarchical structure of the church not only advances the relationship between charisma and institution beyond the Weberian paradigm but also situates the case study of charismatic leadership within the social and historical context of American culture at large.
