Consciência e qualia a partir da perspectiva do duplo aspecto proposta por Thomas Nagel /

Prado, Juciane Terezinha do. January 2018 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: We approach the proposal of dual-aspect monism by Thomas Nagel to analyze the conscious mind and related concepts as qualia. To what extent these mental characteristics can be described in a physical way, or, by performing a thorough analysis of these characteristics, should we conclude that they cannot be described in the same way that we describe physical events? We first describe the dualistic approach and to what extent it contributes to our understanding of the mental characteristics as non-physical events. We also analyze the problems and difficulties in explaining the interaction of non-physical mental processes with the physical body. Then we approach the physicalist conception and propose to describe its problems and the reasons why the mental characteristics cannot be simply explained or even described as ordinary physical processes. In the following chapter, we describe Nagel's perspective on the proposition of dual-aspect monism, in which the author proposes two epistemological perspectives on the conscious mind, the first person perspective, restricted to the conscious being itself, and the third person perspective, corresponding to the typical approach of the empirical sciences. In his view, subjective qualities (qualia) are restricted to the first-person perspective. Therefore, dual-aspect monism in Nagel can be characterized as being ontologically monistic (we are one being, body and mind) and epistemologically dualistic (this being is apprehended by herself i... The application of the transtheoretical model to dietary behaviour

Moore, Andrew January 2002 (has links)
In this thesis the application of the transtheoretical model (Prochaska and DiClemente 1992) to dietary change is investigated. Four studies were conducted examining the core constructs of the model these are (a) stages of change, (b) processes of change, (c) concepts of change. An exploratory cross sectional study found that process and concept use differed significantly between precontemplaters and post action stages. With self efficacy however the main differences were between preparation and other stages. Semi-structured interviews with then conducted with 20 participants in the process of improving their dietary behaviour. Results showed that strategies similar to those outlined in the transtheoretical model social support and consciousness raising were strongly emphasised, regarding decisional balance more benefits than disadvantages were associated with dietary change. Following this a 6-month longitudinal study tested the effectiveness of stage matched and general pamphlets for clients with type two diabetes. 955 participants completed questionnaires with 327 participants receiving stage matched interventions, 309 receiving general interventions and 319 participants being allocated to a control group, intervention copies were distributed at 3 months and a second questionnaire at six months. Significant differences were found between the pre action and post action stages with low fat dietary behaviour. Precontemplaters scored significantly lower than other stages with all processes and with the pros and cons of decisional balance and contemplaters scored lower than post action stages with several processes. Maintainers scored highest in self efficacy. The use of processes and concepts did not match fully that outlined in the transtheoretical model. Interestingly when participants were classified on the basis of low, medium and high fat behaviour, process and concept use followed a broadly linear pattern. At follow up detailed analysis was made problematic by high subject attrition. However, higher scores in consciousness raising were associated with forward stage movement and low scores in social support with retrograde movement. There was no significant difference in effectiveness of stage matched and general pamphlets. There is, however, weak evidence that interventions in general improve low fat dietary behaviour. The stage classification may however give insights not available with standard classifications. Indicating advantages in combining stage and traditional classifications. Suggestions for future studies to investigate the model more thoroughly are also discussed.

Husserl och subjektets självständighet : En undersökning av medvetandets relation till världen i Ideer I och Fenomenologins grundproblem

Bjarkö, Fredrik January 2016 (has links)
In a famous passage in Ideas I, Husserl claims that the pure consciousness is to be understood as independent of anything apart from itself in order to constitute itself, and that it therefore is able exist without a world at all. This notion seems to be contradicted in many of Husserl’s other works as well as stand in conflict with the core of phenomenology itself as a descriptive science of intentional consciousness. Three years before the publication of Ideas I, Husserl held a series of lectures that were later published with the title The Basic Problems of Phenomenology. Here, in stark contrast to Ideas I, the inquiry culminates in stepping beyond the subject as self-given and immanent by instead focusing on intersbjectivity and phenomenological time-consciousness. This essay sets out to examine the relation between the transcendental subject in these two works. It is argued that, while the phenomenological epoché indeed establishes a subject that is prior to the world in the sense that it does not need to suppose the world to guarantee its own existence, Husserl’s philosophical project in The Basic Problems of Phenomenology shows the importance of going beyond such an immanent subject to uncover the full phenomenological field.

A healing outdoor experience - the potential of outdoor environments to enhance psychological healing at Weskoppies psychiatric hospital

Van der Walt, Ralene 09 December 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to explore the potential of a designed physical outdoor environment to improve the social environment and thereby enhance the psychological healing process at Psychiatric institutions. Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital situated in Pretoria West served as a model for testing the hypothesis. The physical and social environment at Weskoppies was analyzed through observations, interviews and literature research. Findings from analysis and theoretical research regarding the influences that physical and social outdoor environments have on mental health, were synthesized to establish design guidelines. These informed the design decision making process and assisted in the proposal of an outdoor environment with emotional healing potential. An open space framework and catalytic sketch plan was designed to illustrate the application of the design guidelines. The author found that an outdoor environment that encourage independence, purpose, consciousness, rest, connectedness and physical activities have the potential to enhance the psychological healing process. The open space framework and sketch plan proved that these guidelines can be accommodated on different scales.
