The purpose with this study was to find out about the perception of a couple of individuals regarding the feature of gender in lifestyle magazines. This is a qualitative journalistic study with focus on gender, lifestyle magazines and reception.   One of our main questions was to find out about our respondents opinion concerning the content through a gender perspective. We were also interested in their thoughts about their own consciousness and others regarding the representation of gender in lifestyle magazines and how they think that their interpretation of male and female features in lifestyle magazines may shape their lives.   In our study we chose to interview eight (8) people. We had a qualitative approach and an open structure regarding the questions during the interviews. Almost all of them took place in Kalmar and a few of them on Skype. To get our respondents to understand our definition of lifestyle magazines we chose to provide them with six (6) articles from the swedish lifestyle magazines Solo and Café, three (3) from each.   The results of the study show that our respondents over all seemed to be conscious readers according to themselves. At the same time they thought that other readers besides themselves did not question how gender were presented in the magazines and therefore contributed to the gender structure in society. According to our respondents one of the main reasons for applying both content and values of the magazines seems to be driven by the age of the reader. Something that we thought was quite interesting, especially considering that almost all of them brought up this subject.   We are hoping this study will contribute to the research about gender and in particular regarding lifestyle magazines and to inspire others to take interest in further studies about gender.

This paper presents a study on classifying receipts and invoices using Machine Learning. Furthermore, Naïve Bayes Algorithm and the advantages of using it will be discussed.  With information gathered from theory and previous research, I will show how to classify images into a receipt or an invoice. Also, it includes pre-processing images using a variety of pre-processing methods and text extraction using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Moreover, the necessity of pre-processing images to reach a higher accuracy will be discussed. A result shows a comparison between Tesseract OCR engine and FineReader OCR engine. After embracing much knowledge from theory and discussion, the results showed that combining FineReader OCR engine and Machine Learning is increasing the accuracy of the image classification.

The problem was to compare the motivational elements of basal reader stories of the past with those of the present. The purpose of the problem were 1) to determine the motivational content as represented by thema found in current basal reader stories and 2) to find differences, if any, between motivational content basal reader stories and findings of previous research.

An American author who is regarded as being a masterful storyteller when it comes to the struggle with immigrant identity is Jhumpa Lahiri. Those who have read her work would most likely agree with me that her texts provide the reader with an intimate and realistic insight into what it is like living between two or several cultures. How does she create this intimacy and feeling of first-hand immigrant experience? One defining feature of Lahiri’s writing is that she leaves many questions unanswered. In other words, there is an endless amount of “gaps” in her texts that it is up to the reader to fill with meaning. This is, from my point of view, an experience very true to life as there are many questions in life we can begin to attempt to answer. Along the journey towards finding an answer, you realize that you have simply ended up with even more questions unanswered. As Lahiri’s writing contains so much ambiguity, the text invites the reader to actively search for alternative interpretations, which is also a feature of this essay.

Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are key determinants of the local chromatin landscape and critical for regulation of eukaryotic gene expression. These histone marks are deposited by a vast number of chromatin modifying enzymes and preferentially recognized by specific associated histone reader domains. Recognition of histone PTMs by histone reader domains is important for either targeting these complexes to chromatin or regulating their enzymatic activity once there. The Polycomb repressive complex 1 and 2 (PRC1 and PRC2) are two such chromatin modifying complexes that are critical for developmental gene repression. The enzymatic activity of PRC2 is tightly regulated by many histone reader domains whereas the PRC1 complex is targeted to chromatin through these domains. In this thesis, I explore how PRC1 and PRC2 functions are regulated by histone reader domains. I identify a previously unrecognized histone reader domain within the PRC2 complex, the EZH2 SANT1 domain, which has important implications for regulating PRC2 enzymatic activity. In addition, I explore the mechanism through which the CBX8 chromodomain targets the PRC1 complex to chromatin. Together, these studies provide significant insight into the regulation of chromatin modifying complexes by histone reader domains and how this occurs via multiple mechanisms.

The e-book reader, Kindle, which Amazon.com officially promoted in November, 2007, has caught the eye of global market, and the sale volumes reached 500,000 in 2008(Bureau of Industrial Development, MOEA, 2009). Moreover, the Kindle2 promoted in March, 2009, has also created a good performance. The success in Kindle lets many Taiwanese manufacturers think the feasibility of developing the e-book reader market in Taiwan. Therefore, this research uses Innovation-Decision Process (Rogers, 2003) and New Product Adoption Model (Holak, 1988) to study the effects of perceived attributes of innovation, include relative advantage, compatibility and complexity, on purchase intention Taiwanese having. Furthermore, the influences about substitutes and reading habits on the purchase intention were also discussed in this study. According to the possible consumer groups, this research focus on Taiwanese who live in Taiwan now and who must be office workers had college degree or be university, graduate, or PhD students. The period of survey was from March 19 to April 18 in 2010 and the questionnaires were handed out through personal interview and e-mail. The number of questionnaires collected is 202 and only 158 questionnaires had confirmed to the standard the study requested. In 158 questionnaires, 42% are office workers and 58% are students; 59% are male and 41% are female; the age distribution of 158 questionnaires is from 20 to 59 years old, and 58% are in the range 20 to 29 years old; About the disposable monthly income, 40% are in the rang NT$5,000 to NT$9,999; 85% are live in south of Taiwan. The findings showed: (1) At present, Only 28% respondents have the purchase intention of e-book reader (selling price for NT$10,000 about); (2) The first three factors which attract Taiwanese to purchase an e-book reader include easy to carry (70%), saving the space to store paper books (40%), and easy to read when you are moving (37%); (3) The relative advantage affected the purchase intention positively; (4) The degree respondents approved of reading paper books usually was positively correlated with purchase intention; (5) The purchase intention was higher when respondents had netbooks or smartphones, and more items of substitutes they had.

The traditional book market matures, there are about 40,000 kinds of books published each year. But it is facing an oversupply situation. Return of a large number of books to make the traditional publishing business increasingly difficult. Online bookstores have established over ten years. Books are the most common products online shopping. The end of year 2010, a large number of sales for ebooks and e-reader. We can see that reading habits of human has begun to change. The reader can read thousands of books with an e-reader around everywhere. Publishers can sell books through the internet. How can the rise of e-reader? What will be affected for the traditional logistics providers and suppliers? Which new business models and benefits bring from e-reader and e-bookstore? This study used qualitative research to the literature review and case study, to observe and explain the e-reader how to affect the traditional suppliers and bring new benefits. Base on publishing ebooks through the internet, the digital platform service providers replace traditional logistics providers, suppliers, and publishers. Internet services provider replace the traditional logistics providers. Ebooks and e-reader use for reduce logistics costs and solve inventory problems. Consumer behavior changed to impact the traditional book industry, but also bring new economic benefits.

Knowledge of the implementation practices of successful elementary schools will be beneficial to other elementary principals who seek to improve student success in reading. This study examined perceptions of principals from elementary schools in Texas whose schools received the Gold Performance Acknowledgement (GPA) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for Continuous Improvement in Reading (CIR) on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in 2002. The study had two purposes: (1) to identify the principal??s perception of the levels of implementation and impact of selected reading strategies used by selected elementary schools in Texas to improve student success in reading and (2) to determine the principal??s perception of the extent to which Accelerated Reader (AR) and AR-like recommend practices were used in selected elementary schools in Texas. The research design for this study was descriptive. Parameters, which are descriptive measures of a population, were used since all 721 members of the population were mailed questionnaires. Research was conducted during the winter of2004. Two hundred fifty-two principals responded. A questionnaire using a Likerttype scale for the principals?? responses was used to collect the data. Principals?? perceptions were measured to determine the degree of implementation and impact of AR and other selected reading strategies. Data were analyzed for all 252 respondents for selected reading strategies and by the categories of AR and non-AR schools for AR recommended reading strategies and AR-like recommended reading strategies, respectively. This study identified the characteristics of a successful reading program in Texas elementary schools. To maximize their budgets while improving student success in reading, principals should provide their teachers with professional development, implement student/teacher conferences to direct reading practice, allow students to self-select books on their independent reading level for independent reading practice, consider use of literature circles, classroom libraries and reading textbooks, review the use of rewards and posting of goals to determine if these practices increase students?? success in reading, assess computer reading programs to determine if there are less costly options available, and in schools using the AR program, review implementation practices for greater impact.
