A Study of the Beethoven Piano Sonata Opus 111 as Edited by Hans von Bülow with the Comparison of Historical and Critical Editions

Choi, Gia Jiha 07 1900 (has links)
Beethoven’s musical descendants, such as Carl Czerny, Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow (Bülow), and Artur Schnabel, realizing that Beethoven’s music needed more directions, published their own Beethoven sonata editions. Czerny and Liszt tried to retain as much of Beethoven’s manuscript as possible in their editions, but later pianist editors such as Bülow and Schnabel boldly added many indications. Bülow’s Beethoven Sonata edition, which was admired by Liszt and was used by Liszt to teach his pupils in his later years, acquired some notoriety among serious pianists and piano students. The reasons for this notoriety were two-fold. First, Bülow’s additions and alterations were believed to be his own interpretations. Second, Bülow’s Beethoven Sonata edition, which is still in print today contains many misprints. The distinction between these two issues is the focus of this dissertation. In this study, I examine the issue of Bülow’s alterations by extensively researching the following accounts: seven historical sources including Beethoven’s manuscripts and early editions; nine editions edited by Beethoven’s musical descendants, Beethoven scholars and musicologists; and three historical recordings created by Beethoven’s musical descendants. This dissertation compares these accounts with Bülow’s edition, particularly the Allegro movement of Beethoven Sonata Op. 111. The comparative study in this dissertation sheds light on Beethoven’s intent for his composition and clarifies whether Bülow’s alterations in his edition were based on his own interpretation, reflect what he learned from Liszt—a close musical descendant of Beethoven, or are simply misprints.

Écrire les vies des Neuf Preux et des Neuf Preuses à la fin du Moyen Âge : étude et édition critique partielle du Traité des Neuf Preux et des Neuf Preuses de Sébastien Mamerot (Josué, Alexandre, Arthur; les Neuf Preuses) / Telling the lives of the Nine Worthies and the Nine Worthy Women in the late Middle Ages : a study and partial critical edition of the Traité des Neuf Preux et des Neuf Preuses by Sébastien Mamerot (Joshua, Alexander, Arthur; the Nine Worthy Women)

Salamon, Anne 26 November 2011 (has links)
Le Traité des Neuf Preux et des Neuf Preuses, written between 1460 and 1468 by Sébastien Mamerot for his lord Louis de Laval, has survived in only one manuscript, richly illuminated. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a commentary of this text as well as a partial critical edition. The topos of the Nine Worthies and Nine Worthy Women spread through literature and the figurative arts from the Vœux du paon by Jacques de Longuyon. Following the success of Boccaccio's works and that of the Famous Men and Women theme, three compilations devoted to the Worthies were written, organised as collections of biographies. Sébastien Mamerot's text is the first of these three works that, although more or less contemporary, are nonetheless independent from each other. Moreover his is the only one to deal with the Nine Worthy Women. Whereas the topos of the Nine Worthies is often reduced to a list of names, these texts consist of vast historical compilations telling the genealogy and high deeds of the heroes and heroines. Each book is like a small library in so far as it contains biographies of some of the favourite figures of the Middle Ages; through them we can have an outlook on the reception in the XVth century of the works from the previous centuries which enables us to establish a guide of the favourite historical books read at the time. Le Traité des Neuf Preux et des Neuf Preuses is at the crossroads of different cultural and literary influences: filling in those well-known names by telling their lives embodies the late medieval sensibility to the links existing between fame, writing and memory.

Discurso propedêutico de Kant diante da recepção da Crítica da Razão Pura / Kants propaedeutic discourse in face of the reception of Critique of Pure Reason

Ferreira, André Luís Doneux 08 August 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate how the reception of the first edition of the Critique of pure reason echoes in the text corpus devoted to prepare the reader to understand this book. In other words, how does Kant reconstitute his introductory speech in relation to the references and judgments given by the readers of the first edition, which was published in 1781? Thus, the text corpus comprises three texts where the propaedeutic task - the prior preparation of the reader - is clearly influenced by the reception of the Critique of Pure Reason. These texts are: the Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, which presents itself as science, the second edition of the Introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason and the Preface of the latter. Moreover, these changes could be analyzed in Kant\'s position about remarkable events in the philosophical and political context of the years following the publication of the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason. They were mainly the Pantheismusstreit and the change in the Prussian throne in 1786, which is often taken as the cause of the alleged \"return into dogmatism\" that was noticed in the second edition of the Critique of pure reason. On the same note, the interpretation of some of the nodal questions in the critical fortune of the Kantian philosophy, especially the status of transcendental idealism, the autonomy that must characterize the public use of reason and the elucidation of the project of a Critique of Pure Reason also compose important points for this dissertations investigation. All in all, it is crucial to valorize the introductory speech of Kant and the changes made by the author as an overall attempt to understand his work. Without it, our comprehension of such important texts would be innocuous or even impossible to occur objectively.

Instrumento breve para triagem do comprometimento cognitivo em pacientes com esclerose múltipla para o contexto brasileiro: estudos com diferentes medidas / Brief screening for cognitive impairment in Multiple Sclerosis patients to the Brazilian context: studies with different objective measures

Spedo, Carina Tellaroli 24 August 2016 (has links)
Background: The cognitive impairment (CI) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has the prevalence rate from 43% to 70% and may occur from the Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) to the early stages of MS. The CI in MS can advance independently of motor signs and symptoms, EDSS scores and MRI stable. In this context, the National Multiple Sclerosis Questionnaire (MSNQ) and the International Brief Cognitive Assesment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) are international tools used to screening and monitoring MS patients in care centers. Further studies and meetings provided by same committee alluded that MSNQ has several limitations for being a non-objective measure and the screening using the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) alone is not effective because other areas that may be impaired in MS is not screened. With the second revision of the MMSE, and the lack of objective screening tools to quikly screening MS patients that needed to be monitored by BICAMS, we aimed in the presente study to create a fast measurement to screening the episodic memory, processing speed, attention and working memory from BICAMS and MMSE-2. Objective: To obtain brief a screening tool for MS (MMSE-MS) were conducted four studies using different tools: first the prototype study to development of CVLT-2 lists, adaptation, psychometric properties and normative data of BICAMS to the Braziliam context (as our gold standard), Cross cultural adaptation, psychometric properties, and normative data of MMSE-2 (the experimental tool) and the preliminary study of development of MMSE-MS. Methods: All translation and adaptation studies were conducted following the same method, as widely used in the literature. The first study consisted of conventional adaptation and prototypical norms, aiming to see which had the best estimates of equivalence between the cultures. The second study with BICAMS protocol show that MS scored significantly lower on all BICAMS tests. At the end of the study, the results were discussed with a member of the international committee to confirm the evidences of transculturality between the original and Brazilian versions. The third study consisted of Adapt, to investigate the psychometric properties and stablish normative data to the MMSE-2. Similarly to the previous study, an international judge discussed the results of the study of adaptation to identify the estimatives of transculturality. The fourth and last study was conducted in order to obtain a tool with sensitivity and similar specificity estimates BICAMS, but it was designed to screen patients who are eligible to be accompanied by BICAMS. Participated of the first study, 374 healthy volunteers and 25 patients with MS. In the second and third study participated 128 MS patients and 602 healthy volunteers. All clinical studies and community samples were carried out from 2013 to 2015 and had the partnership of the Brazilian Institute of Neuropsychology (IBNeuro) and the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Psychological Assessment (LABIAP). The collection of patients was performed at the Neuroimmunology Outpatient Clinic from Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP-USP). Results: In the first study, were kept 5 words of 15 from the original American version. The reason for these changes in the Brazilian list were the differences between the syllabic division, extension of the words and the presence of prototypicall words. Was also found that until the fourth word evoked in our culture, in each semantic category were the same as those mentioned in the native language, but the order of the frequency varied within each category, indicating that although there are words that are prototypically commom between the two cultures in the overall semantic classification, the cultural context changes when we analyse the specifics prototipically words inside of each classification and semantic categories. To the second study, the BICAMS showed similar estimates of reliability and validity for current use as monitoring tool for MS in the Brazilian contexto, supporting the diagnostic validity of the Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation The normative data were satisfactory (p <0.001) in relation to the vocational status. The third study, with MMSE-2 also provided good estimates of validity and precision to the both cultures. To the fourth study, the MMSE-2 was compared to the BICAMS. The MMSE-2 tasks which had similar sensitivity and specificity to the BICAMS protocol was the recalling, attention and calculation, history memory and processing speed (Symbol Digit-coding). The selected tasks were those classified as moderate and Strong correlations. The second procedure consisted on comparisions among the MMSE-2 measurements and BICAMS using ROC curve. So, the MMSE-2 measures that had significant (p <0.001) specificity and sensitivity and similar area under the curve (ROC) were eligible to composse the screening tool. As the digit-symbol coding task is susceptible to motor demand, we decided to include the oral SDMT to the task. Thus, to get our screening tool, normative data for this instrument were created from the sum of the MMSE-MS items with oral SDMT. Conclusion: The overall of the data from these studies calls attention to the necessity of the caution to the adaptation procedures used in cross-cultural adaptation of the tasks that has verbal and semantic stimuli. There is also the need of tools abel to screening MS patients. For this, these preliminar data for MMSE-MS showed evidences of validation, similar sensitivity and and specificity, with normative data culturally adjusted to the Brazilian context.

An edition of the 'Conduct of Life' based on the six extant manuscripts with full commentary, complementary critical and codicological analysis, notes and introduction

Payne, Robin John January 2018 (has links)
The Conduct of Life, also known as the Poema Morale, is a verse-sermon that has been largely ignored by literary histories, and despite the longevity of its textual tradition its various texts have never been the subject of extended study. This dissertation brings together the seven manuscript versions of the text, which date from the end of the twelfth to the end of the thirteenth centuries, and re-examines them individually and as a cohort exhibiting variance. It therefore offers a revealing indicator of how continuity and change actually operated through the interaction between preceding tradition and scribes and audiences. This is achieved through a three-fold analysis of the verse sermon which highlights the fluidity of the manuscript culture during this period and the willingness of scribes to adapt texts to suit new purposes, to create differences due to dialect and comprehension, or copy variants from a now lost exemplar. First, an edition of the text, based on the version found in Cambridge, Trinity College MS B. 14. 52, folios 2r-9v , explores, through the accompanying notes, the themes, style and phraseology which not only reflect the influence of earlier English literary and hortatory texts but also represent a living tradition which found popularity within diverse writing and social environments. Secondly, a diplomatic edition of each text is presented, preceded by an introduction to the text, grammar and dialect, with full codicological and palaeographic notes. Finally, a parallel text edition bears witness to the copying and reshaping of the text throughout its history. It is accompanied by extensive linguistic notes which highlight the adaptation and textual variance between each version of the Conduct of Life. Each new variant has not only been read in relation to the other versions of the same work but also in relation to the manuscript context it newly occupies as a result of its transmission. Each copy reshapes the material within an established structure of rhythm and metre and, therefore, the dissertation concludes that the sermon is recreated as a series of individual texts, which might be individually analysed, because each is different, particularly within their specific physical and historical moments. This fluidity or mouvance suggests for the Conduct of Life and, for that matter, the texts that preceded it in the historical narrative of the twelfth century that there is no authentic text; that the instability of the manuscript 'tradition' moves from manuscript to manuscript.

Neven, Sylvie 28 January 2011 (has links)

A Critical Edition of Donne's "The Indifferent," "Love's Usury," "The Will," "The Funerall," "The Primerose," and "The Dampe" and a Digital Edition of "To his Mistress Going to Bed"

McLawhorn, Tracy Elizabeth 03 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation presents an edition of six poems from John Donne’s Songs and Sonets—“The Indifferent,” “Love’s Usury,” “The Will,” “The Funerall,” “The Primerose,” and “The Dampe”—and a digital edition of one additional poem, “To His Mistress Going to Bed.” Using the methodologies of The Variorum Edition of the Poems of John Donne, I have also adopted the edition’s principal goal—to recover and present Donne’s exact texts to the extent that this is possible. For each poem, I have selected a copy-text and emended it in accordance with the Variorum’s principles. A textual introduction for each poem explains how the copy-text was chosen and traces the circulation of the text in all seventeenth-century artifacts. I have also provided a textual apparatus for each poem, which, in addition to recording the texts collated, emendations to the copy-text, imperfections in the sources, and indentation patterns in the sources, also notes all verbal variants and variants of punctuation. Finally, I have created a stemma charting the transmissional history for each poem and giving a visual representation of how the textual artifacts relate to each other. The other major component of my dissertation, a digital edition of “To His Mistress Going to Bed,” is meant to serve as a prototype for what might usefully be done with Donne’s poems in a digital medium. While the actual digital edition of this poem cannot be fully represented on paper, my chapter on this edition outlines the process I used to create it and describes its major features. The digital edition itself can be found at <http://donnevariorum.tamu.edu/resources/tohismistress/tohismistress.html>.

La Suite du Roman de Merlin éditée d'après un manuscrit du XVe siècle : (Paris, BNF, fr. 112) / The Suite du Roman de Merlin edited after a XVth century manuscript : (Paris, National Library of France, french fonds 112)

Cretoiu, Elena 08 March 2014 (has links)
The fragment of the Suite du Roman de Merlin that we edited is preserved in four manuscripts (London manuscript, British Library, Additional 38117, the Cambridge University Library manuscript, Additional 7071, the BNF 112 manuscript, which is the main manuscript of our edition, and the Imola manuscript, Biblioteca Comunale, ms. 135 AA25 n° 9 (7)). Comparing to the other three already existing editions of the Suite (O. Sommer, Die Abenteuer Gawains Ywains und Le Morholts mit Den Drei Jungfrauen (Zeitschrift für Romanische Philologie, Beiheft 47, 1913), P. C. Smith (Les enchantemenz de Bretagne, Chapel Hill, 1977), edition based upon the Cambridge manuscript, and G. Roussineau (La Suite du Roman de Merlin, Droz, 1996), edition mainly based upon the London manuscript), the aim of our edition is to offer a text of the Suite du Roman de Merlin based upon the BNF 112 manuscript, according to the modern principles applied in the transcription of the medieval texts. We offered a great number of variants given by the other manuscritpts of the Suite and limited our interference with the text only for corrections which we considered strictly necessary. The text of our edition is followed by notes, a glossary and an index of names. On the linguistic level, we noted regional caracteristics that lead us to consider that our manuscript belongs to the North domain (conseilh ; karoloient, etc.), modern structures comparing to the other manuscripts of the Suite and a certain number of termes (baudel ; pourvillier) which can improve the DMF (Dictionnaire du Moyen Français) basis.
