Tar Empatin slut?

Svensson, Lina January 2019 (has links)
Svensson, L. Tar empatin slut? En litteraturstudie om empatitrötthet. Examensarbete i omvårdnad 15 högskolepoäng. / Svensson, L. Does empathy ever end? A literature review about compassion fatigue. Degree project in nursing 15 credit points. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Care Science, 2018. Background: Nurses today are exposed to more traumatic events under a short period of time than a person outside the caring environment experiences in a lifetime. Compassion fatigue is a new concept in Swedish health care. To understand compassion fatigue the concept empathy further been discussed in the background. A deeper understanding for the phenomena compassion fatigue is presented in the result. Aim: The aim for this study is to further explore the phenomena of compassion fatigue from a nursing perspective.Method: A non-systematic literature review has been used in this study based on literature using different approaches to get a holistic view on the phenomena compassion fatigue. Result: The phenomenon of compassion fatigue affects the care of patients and relatives. Nurses with short experience are more easily affected by compassion fatigue than nurses with long experience. There are no guidelines for how a nurse should counteract comapssion fatigue, but nurses use their own strategies to not suffer from compassion fatigue. Conclusion: The review shows that the concept of compassion fatigue is highly topical in today's medical care when high workload and stress in the nurse is often a fact. Keywords: Burnout, Compassion fatigue, Nursing, Nurses, Secondary traumatic stress.

Rating the Acting Moment: Dissociation, Flow, and Empathy after a Monologue Performance

Panero, Maria Eugenia January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ellen Winner / Actors make imagined characters in imaginary circumstances come alive, as if they were real. What cognitive processes make it possible for actors to accomplish this feat? The goal of this dissertation was to examine three characteristics that actors may possess and that might make this possible: dissociation, flow, and empathy. Acting students (n = 44) and non-acting students (n = 43) first completed a baseline measure of dissociation, and then performed a monologue that was given to them. This performance was recorded and later rated on dimensions of acting. Participants next completed self-report measures of dissociation, flow, and empathy. It was hypothesized that acting students would score higher than non-acting students on all three measures, and that dissociation of all participants would increase post-performance. I also assessed whether acting experience, dissociation, flow, empathy, and/or the time taken to prepare the monologue for performance predicted performance ratings. The results revealed that acting students scored significantly higher than non-acting students on flow (and some of its subscales) and empathy (and some of its subscales). Although no group differences emerged on pre-performance levels of dissociation, only acting students significantly increased their level of dissociation post-performance. Finally, acting experience was the only significant predictor of performance ratings for both acting and non-acting students. This research demonstrates that, compared to non-acting students, acting students report higher levels of empathy and flow immediately after performing a monologue. Additionally for acting students, levels of dissociation rise after performing the monologue. Empathy and dissociation are likely important tools used by actors to “become” a character, and flow is likely the result of actors’ ability to immerse themselves fully in the performance. Nevertheless, acting experience is the strongest predictor of how a performance will be rated. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Homebound: Spatializing the Immigrant Experience by Breaking Down Barriers in Virtual Reality

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis explores the production process of developing a virtual reality experience with an emphasis on digital humanities and the methods of adapting real-world events, narratives, and media coverage into an interactive, location based VR experience. The thesis contextualizes the production of an accompanying media project, which is informed by the history of U.S migration and the media’s impact on the opinion of Americans. Through the observation of production methods, this paper summarizes the process of creating a VR experience that expands the established production pipeline to more fluidly produce immersive interactive content. Using Homebound: The Interactive Immigrant Experience, a collaborative VR project as a prototype for these methods, we were able to integrate and develop a media production pipeline that uses off the shelf hardware in unison with Unreal Engine 4 to produce a prototype VR experience that follows the narrative on a Latin American Immigrant. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Homebound: Exploring Environmental Storytelling in Spatial Virtual Reality to Breakdown Psychological Borders and Build Empathy

Unknown Date (has links)
The problem of immigration has been around since the dawn of man because humans cannot just stay in one place, especially if that place is not suitable for their lives and their families. It is a reasonable expectation of the human condition to want to feel free and safe because we do not live in a utopian society. There are social injustices, wars, and atrocities that threaten the most basic of human needs and freedoms in many countries across the globe. Homebound, the virtual reality experience, which was developed in Unreal, aims to make sense of this crisis and shed light on the lives affected by this social ill. By using rich environments, virtual production and motion capture, to construct a place that captures the realism of the illegal immigration narrative, this manuscript will show how behavioral and gameplay psychology, when paired with environmental storytelling, can be utilized to craft impactful and empathetic, immersive stories and edutainment experiences for the player. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Understanding historical empathy in the classroom

Dillenburg, Margery 06 June 2017 (has links)
Historical empathy is a topic that is decades old in history education research, but has been stunted in it’s implementation due to a lack of conceptual clarity, and a lag in balanced research grounding the term. Also, classroom practices and pedagogy have had some implementation missteps that have encouraged over identification and unrestrained emotional engagement between students of history and historical agents. These missteps run counter to the practice of quality, unbiased historical inquiry. The goal of this research study is to contribute to the field and knowledge in area of historical empathy, and to provide knowledge that help practitioners avoid such missteps. This study intends to help stabilize the term, and to investigate the dual-process (affective and cognitive) nature of historical empathy engagement. Through investigates the different conceptualizations and frameworks, especially in digging deeper into students’ affective process in historical empathy engagement, this study intends to balance the field’s understanding of the affective process in a dual-process model. The findings highlight the areas where current knowledge was echoed, where research may be misunderstood or fall short, and where further research and study is needed.

Interpersonal Aspects of Musical Collaboration for Collaborative Pianists

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: Collaborative piano education tends to discuss techniques of collaboration as primarily a musical skill. However, common understanding within the field regarding a collaborative pianist’s ability to work with others offers another aspect to this assumption. It goes without saying that pianists’ interpersonal skills largely affect with whom they will work, and how efficaciously pianists and their partners will work together. Correspondingly, how pianists work with others can directly affect the success or failure of the musical collaboration. The first intention of this paper is to explain why interpersonal skills are integral to the creation of quality musical outcomes and so-called musical togetherness; it specifies interpersonal aspects innate and unique to a pianist’s experience. Next, this paper defines two crucial components of collaboration – empathy and active listening – and discusses how pianists can build these skills into their personal practice and rehearsal. It continues with an examination of the interpersonal implications of studio arrangement, body language, and verbal language from a pianist’s perspective. This paper concludes with ideas for how to test for these skills during the collaborative piano audition process, a class syllabus showing how these skills can be incorporated into the collaborative piano curriculum, and suggestions for further research about interpersonal aspects of collaboration. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2019

Understanding the Role of Community Health Workers

Robinson, Kiiera January 2022 (has links)
Job titles and responsibilities of community health workers (CHWs) have evolved along with the different organizations that have elected to employ them. In a 2020 speech, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden discussed the health disparities individuals face in economically distressed communities. He specifically discussed the roles of CHWs and the hiring of 150,000 CHWs to be placed in communities across the country. Unfortunately, information on the experiences, competencies, and factors that contribute to the success of CHWs is limited. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore CHWs’ perceptions of what their role entails and what internal and external factors impact their success on healthcare teams and at the current organization for which they work. Forty CHWs from four different states completed 60-minute semi-structured Zoom interviews. The findings of this study described the role of CHWs as locating and engaging members, connecting members of the health plan to both medical and social resources, assisting in navigating the healthcare system, and educating members on their benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2021 introduced changes in the way CHWs completed outreach and connected with members; it also introduced the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and connections to testing and vaccine programs. Important competencies highlighted by CHWs included empathy, communication skills, networking skills, and cultural competency. CHWs preferred hands-on learning methods when acquiring necessary skills for success. Lastly, organizations can assist and motivate CHWs in their organizations by providing incentives, ongoing training, and management support.

Historisk Empati : En översikt av begreppets tolkning och inkorporering i skolverksamhet / Historical Empathy : An Overview of the Interpretation of the Concept and its Implementation in Schools

Andersson, Per, Färlin, Mikael January 2021 (has links)

A Nursing Theory of Personal System Empathy: Interpreting a Conceptualization of Empathy in King's Interacting Systems

Alligood, Martha R., May, Barbara A. 01 January 2000 (has links)
This article presents a theory of empathy discovered through rational hermeneutic interpretation within King's personal system. Personal system concepts from King's general systems framework include perception, self, growth and development, body image, space, time, and learning. Propositions for each concept in the personal system were explicated and a theory of nursing empathy was developed. This nursing theory proposes that empathy organizes perceptions; facilitates awareness of self and others; increases sensitivity; promotes shared respect, mutual goals, and social awareness; cultivates understanding of individuals within a historical and social context; and affects learning.
