The Expansion of a Retail Chain: An Analysis of Wal-Mart Locations in the United States

Ostrander, Anthony P. 05 1900 (has links)
Retail geography is an expanding field that is becoming increasingly important within academia, the business environment, and the national and global economy. The focus of this study is to provide insight and additional understanding of the site selection processes employed by Wal-Mart in the United States. The research studies Wal-Mart from a national perspective and investigates the patterns of retail store expansion across the United States from 1990 to 2005. The study employs the use of a continuous Poisson model to check for significant clustering, and a single and multiple correlation analysis to identify the types of relationships that exist between retail stores and location. The results of the study make apparent several distinct patterns of retail store dispersion within the United States between the years 1990 to 2005.

”Men nu när vi är fler så krävs det ju mer…” : En kvalitativ studie om företagsidentitet i en expansiv fas

Nilsson, Maria, Gustafsson, Alice January 2020 (has links)

The relationship of cephalometric and airway characteristics in SRBD and expansion patients: an observational study

Alsulaiman, Osama 03 August 2021 (has links)
AIMS: The aims of this study were to examine the cephalometric and airway measurements on children with Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) and without SRBD, and to investigate the impact of maxillary expansion on these measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study utilized data from Boston University Orthodontics Department between 2016 and 2020. Lateral cephalograms, acoustic rhinometry and pharyngometry were obtained at two time points. SRBD was determined by a score of 0.33 or higher according to the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire. Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Statistical significance was set at <0.05. RESULTS: A total of 163 children (61 male, 102 female) were included in this study. Certain airway measurements (Ph Volume p=0.02, Rh air resistance p=0.05, Rh minimum resistance p=0.001) were significantly higher in SRBD group compared to non-SRBD group. In the SRBD group there was a significant negative correlation between Ph Min Distance and SNA (p=0.001), SND (p=0.05), mandibular arc (p=0.03), U1-SN (p=0.02), U1-Apo (p=0.03). Positive. correlations were observed between Ph Volume with L1-NB (p=0.05) and Rh Min Distance Left with Pog- NB (p=-0.5), mandibular arc p=0.05, L1-NB (p=0.01), L1-Apo (p=0.01). Rh Min Cross-sectional left was positive correlated with overbite (p=0.03) and Rh Min cross-sectional right with posterior face height (p=0.05). Certain airway measurements and cephalometric measurements were statistically different across expansion and non-expansion groups (RhVolumeRt p=0.003. RhMinCrossSectionalLft p=0.03, RhMindistanceRt p=0.03, RhAirResistanceRt p=0.05, ANB p=0.0058, S-N (mm) p=0.05, U1 - NA (mm) p=0.04, U-Incisor Protrusion p=0.01, nterincisal Angle p=0.01, Upper Lip - S Line p= 0.005, Upper Lip to E-Plane p=0.01 CONCLUSION: Airway measurements and cephalometric measurements differ significantly between SRBD and non-SRBD subjects. Significant correlations were observed between cephalometric measurements and airway measurements in the SRBD children. Maxillary expansion can be a treatment option for improving certain airway and cephalometric values among those with sleep-disordered breathing.

Pore Structure and Pore Solution in Alkali Activated Fly Ash Geopolymer Concrete and Its Effect on ASR of Aggregates with Wide Silicate Contents

Paudel, Shree Raj January 2019 (has links)
Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is detrimental to concrete. It is a time-dependent phenomenon, which can lead to strength loss, cracking, volume expansion, and premature failure of concrete structures. In essence, it is a particular chemical reaction involving alkali hydroxides and reactive form of silica present within the concrete mix. Geopolymer is a type of alkaline activated binder synthesized through polycondensation reaction of geopolymeric precursor and alkali polysilicates. In this thesis, three types of reactive aggregates with different chemical compositions were used. Systematic laboratory experiments and microstructural analysis were carried out for the geopolymer concrete and the OPC concrete made with the same aggregates. The result suggests that the extent of ASR reaction due to the presence of three reactive aggregates in geopolymer concrete is substantially lower than that in OPC based concrete, which is explained by the pore solution change and verified through their microstructural variations and FTIR images.

“A Metaphor for the Impossibility of Togetherness”: Expansion Processes in Gubaidulina’s First String Quartet

Stroud, Cara 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis illustrates how I hear processes of expansion organizing musical materials in the First String Quartet. By employing a flexible approach to expansion and developing models of wedge and additive expansions beyond the bounds of specific voice-leading or rhythmic augmentation procedures, expansion processes can be understood in each of the varied episodes of the quartet. Gubaidulina’s use of expansion processes, embodied organically in pitch, rhythm, form, and physical space, unifies the episodic materials of the First String Quartet and provides an inevitable conclusion to the work’s loose narrative.

Wealth Effects of Foreign Expansion by U.S. Banks

Waheed, Amjad, Mathur, Ike 01 January 1995 (has links)
The effects of foreign expansion on the market values of U.S. banks (USBs) are examined in this study. The results show that shareholders of USBs experience significant abnormal returns of -0.17 percent when banks announce foreign expansions. Abnormal returns are insignificant when the announced mode of expansion is through a representative office, are significantly positive for announcements related to branches, and are significantly negative when the announced mode of expansion is through formation of a joint venture or a subsidiary, or through an acquisition. Abnormal returns are significantly negative when banks announce expansion into developed countries, and are significantly positive when announcements relate to risky developing countries. Post-announcement changes in the total variance of returns and in the unsystematic risk of USBs are inversely related with abnormal returns. Higher wealth effects are associated with higher levels of prior overseas experience.

Re-Expansion Pulmonary Edema Following Puncture of a Giant Bulla

McCoskey, Eugene H., McKinney, Lisa M., Byrd, Ryland P., Roy, Thomas M. 01 December 2000 (has links)
Ipsilateral pulmonary edema may occur in a lung that has been rapidly reinflated after a period of collapse. The syndrome of re-expansion pulmonary edema is associated with variable degrees of hypotension and hypoxemia. In its extreme form, it may result in cardiac arrest and death. The initial cause of uninflated pulmonary parenchyma described with re-expansion pulmonary edema has typically been either a large undrained pleural effusion or a pneumothorax. The authors describe a patient in whom re-expansion pulmonary edema developed when inadvertent puncture of large emphysematous bullae released previously atelectatic lung.

EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF ARCH EXPANSION WITH CORTICOTOMY-ASSISTED CLEAR ALIGNER THERAPY

Roblee, Thomas, Boyd, Robert R, Chen, James, Oh, Heesoo 25 September 2020 (has links)
Introduction: Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy (SFOT) has been utilized for years to overcome the limitations encountered with traditional orthodontic treatment of dentoalveolar and alveoloskeletal malocclusions. The procedure, which consists of full flap corticotomies and bone grafting, has many proposed benefits including increased speed and range of tooth movement. The purpose of this study is to evaluate arch expansion in patients treated with SFOT and clear aligners. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was used to evaluate 51 consecutive adult patients that were treatment planned for significant arch expansion with corticotomies, bone grafting, and clear aligners. 17 of the 51 patients refused the surgical procedure and served as controls. Eight transverse arch width measurements were obtained at three different time points (Initial, ClinCheck, Refinement). Five calculations were performed to determine the magnitude, predictability, and efficiency of arch expansion. Results: The difference in treatment time between the two groups was statistically significant at 5.2 months (P < .0001). On average, corticotomies reduced the length of treatment by 46% and increased the rate of expansion 2.4x. Patients that received SFOT achieved a greater magnitude (+28%) of expansion at a significantly higher rate (P< 0.002) than controls for all eight interarch measurements. The SFOT group displayed higher predictability (% goal achieved) and a smaller difference between predicted and achieved tooth movements for all measures obtained. The mean age for the entire sample was 42.81 (+12.51 years). Conclusion: Arch expansion with corticotomy-assisted clear aligner therapy is significantly more effective, efficient, and predictable than with clear aligners alone. The predictability of expansion with aligners appears to have a higher range than initially thought, even in patients that do not receive corticotomies.
