ERP systems in HEI context from a multiple perspective view : a case study?Abba¯s, Muh?ammad January 2011 (has links)
Enterprise Resource planning has gained prominence in the field of IS literature and is a significant phenomenon in practice in organizations and now also in higher educational institutions. These Institutions have their own unique method of operation and infrastructural facilities; and one of the biggest single most expenditure made by them is in their Enterprise Resource Planning Systems. The drive towards ERP is based on a desire to rationalize and streamline information systems across the whole organization seeking both improvement and business benefits. The ERP systems combine all discrete information into a single, integrated, real-time database. In the HEI context the ERP systems are seen as software solutions that address the diverse needs by tightly integrating all departments and functions within a single computer system configuration to serve particular needs such as students systems which manage all the student records/data and VLE systems like Blackboard which is a course management system. ERP addresses the institutions needs by providing a better service to its various users. The aim of this research study is to explore the quality, impact, benefits, utility and challenges of ERP systems specifically the student systems and VLE Blackboard in a Higher Educational Institution and analyse these ERP systems from a multiple perspective. The ERP systems have been applied by many Educational Institutions around the world as a key part of their organizational infrastructure and these systems tend to have a long life cycle in organizational use. The requirement is for the smooth functioning and utilization of these ERP systems while taking into consideration the changing demands as universities operate in a dynamic environment where there is a rapid change in technology. Millions of pounds and extensive deliberation is made on the implementation of the ERP system on the basis of expectations to align the institution objectives with business needs. This presents a huge challenge, if not properly addressed may lead to heavy investment without the corresponding institution efficiency.

Evaluation of Nutritional Quality Through a Counselor Administered Weight Loss Program Utilizing a Smart Phone AppJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This study evaluated the LoseIt Smart Phone app by Fit Now Inc. for nutritional quality among users during an 8 week behavioral modification weight loss protocol. All participants owned smart phones and were cluster randomized to either a control group using paper and pencil record keeping, a memo group using a memo function on their smart phones, or the LoseIt app group which was composed of the participants who owned iPhones. Thirty one participants completed the study protocol: 10 participants from the LoseIt app group, 10 participants from the memo group, and 11 participants from the paper and pencil group. Food records were analyzed using Food Processor by ESHA and the nutritional quality was scored using the Healthy Eating Index - 2005 (HEI-2005). Scores were compared using One-Way ANOVA with no significant changes in any category across all groups. Non-parametric statistics were then used to determine changes between combined memo and paper and pencil groups and the LoseIt app group as the memo and paper and pencil group received live counseling at biweekly intervals and the LoseIt group did not. No significant difference was found in HEI scores across all categories, however a trend was noted for total HEI score with higher scores among the memo and paper and pencil group participants p=0.091. Conclusion, no significant difference was detected between users of the smart phone app LoseIt and memo and paper and pencil groups. More research is needed to determine the impact of in-person counseling versus user feedback provided with the LoseIt smart phone app. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Nutrition 2011

This paper starts from the single tube condensation theory of shell side inferred by Nusselt , and then analyzes the coefficient of heat transfer of the shell side and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the tube bundle. Referring to the overall heat coefficient of surface condensers and the calculation means of pressure decrease, the HEI, the most exploited one in the commerce is used by combining the basic theory of condenser heat transfer based on the Delphi function language to develop a set of assistant designing software. The software can be used to evaluate the performance of condensers, calculate the sizes of tube materials, and predict the pressure of condensers when the different tube materials are used. When the units are in using, this software also can calculate the cleanliness factor and determine the suitable time to clean the condenser tubes.
There are four common used tube materials to compare their performance. They are Al- Brass tubes, 70-30 Cu-Ni tubes, Sea-Cure tubes and Ti tubes. This paper use the software to analyze the performance of the heat transfer of these four different kinds of tube materials and also to calculate the sizes of tubes .And use research papers to analyze the reason of anti-corrosion of these four. In addition, the HEI method can analyze the anti-vibration ability of these four.
After comparing with all the performance of the tube materials, and then choosing the best tube material to provide an example for condenser design of new electricity plants or for old electricity plants to change the tube materials.

The seriousness of environmental problems requires the engagement of various sectors of society, especially education. Higher education institutions should act as protagonists in combating the environmental impacts generated by society. Thereby, the present study aims to analyze the presence of environmental management in the curricular structures of undergraduate courses, in the extension actions developed, in the research projects and in the operational activities carried out at the Rio Branco campus of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), a higher education institution located in the northern region of Brazil. To achieve this objective, semi-structured interviews were conducted with HEI leaders, analysis of official institution documents and non-systematic observation on campus premises. This analysis also allowed to identify environmental aspects and impacts resulting from the activities carried out in the following sectors of the campus: university restaurant, classrooms and administrative service, restrooms and laboratories. Analyzed the current conditions, actions were proposed to reduce the identified environmental impacts. The data collected, analyzed through the content analysis technique, identified that of the 33 undergraduate courses offered by UFAC, 75.76% of them present some discipline in their curricular structure that addresses the environmental theme On the other hand, few extension actions and few research projects related to campus environmental issues were identified. In 2017, among the operational activities, there was only one institutionalized action of environmental management, which is related to the distribution of bottles to replace the use of disposable cups, an action that from the beginning did not have discontinuity. UFAC has a Sustainable Logistics Management Plan, but it has not been approved yet and its execution has not been initiated. It was observed that, due to the lack of knowledge of the leaders and the awareness of the entire university community, environmental management at UFAC is at an early stage, which demonstrates the importance of the implementation of a tool that systematizes environmental management actions involving the entire campus, seeking to reduce the environmental impacts generated, avoid wasting resources and make this HEI an example for the Northern region.

The experiences of mentors implementing a mentorship programme at a higher education institutionTsebe, Aubrey Tebogo 20 December 2011 (has links)
This study represents a shift in focus with regard to studies related to mentorship. It endeavours to go beyond documenting the prevalence of mentorship to understanding the experiences of mentors and factors that encourage participation in mentorship programmes. The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the experiences of mentors during the implementation of a mentorship programme at a Higher Education Institution (HEI). The purpose of this study, has guided the following two questions for the current study: <ul> <li> How do mentors experience the implementation of a mentorship programme?</li> <li> How can the understanding of such experiences inform theory on mentorship programmes in Higher Education Institutions?</li> </ul> I made use of a case study research design. Four participants were purposively selected for this study based on their potential to provide data relevant for the study as they were part of the recently ended mentorship programme. Data was collected over a period of a week by means of semi-structured interviews and reflections. In this study I made use of qualitative approach, and a thematic method of analysis was used for identifying, analysing and reporting themes. The results of the study indicated the following results: <ul> <li> Mentors had a general definition of their mentorship experiences as personal life event(s).</li> <li> When mentorship was viewed as a personal life event, it was found to have an emotional aspect which creates a platform for learning and development.</li> <li> Positive experiences, as mentioned by participants in this study, included an opportunity for personal growth and development, how mentors and mentees benefited from being part of the mentorship programme, and positive relationships between mentors and their mentees.</li> <li> Negative experiences referred to by participants included difficulties of correspondence between mentors and mentees, lack of mentee attendance at mentorship meetings, gender and racial issues and mentors' uncertainties about what to do in the programme and feeling a lack of guidance.</li> <li> Decisions regarding exclusion and inclusion criteria of mentees into the programme, support from mentorship supervisors and finding mentors who demonstrate good qualities were identified as challenges in mentorship implementation.</li> </ul> / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted
