Designing a Sustainable, Multi-Generational House in a Low Arid Region: Passive Design through Principles and Patterns

Landgren, William 13 May 2015 (has links)
Sustainable Built Environments Senior Capstone / The traditional architecture is replaced with modern architecture which delivers less sustainable designs. The houses consume more energy, are less useful, and eventually cost more money. The focus of social, economical, and environmental impacts helps the project become more sustainable. The pillars are narrowed to patterns and principles. The vernacular architecture with passive design supports the principle. A Pattern Language with logical explanation supports the patterns. The design includes a floor plan, elevations, and section to provide the idea of how to apply the principles and patterns.

The taking of the Fifth : the contested 1960 election in the Indiana Fifth Congressional District

Webster, Daniel Charles January 1985 (has links)
Elections are seldom covered in detail below the level of the national contests. Regional, district, and local elections often appear to be too provincial to be worth the time and effort to research and analyze in any detail."Taking the Fifth" is about a contested congressional race that was in dispute between various local and forces longer than any other House race on record. The Fifth District of Indiana leaned Republican, but it swung to the Democrats about once a decade. The 1960 election broke that historic pattern.Since 1960 was a pivotal election year for both political parties, and since the U. S. Congress was divided by various regional and philosophical factions, it is the contention of the dissertation that the Indiana Fifth District took on more importance than it would have under normal circumstances.Pursuit of power by local and national figures became inextricably involved with the struggle of the candidates in the Fifth District of Indiana. Intraparty grudges between district and state Democratic leaders, scars from Republican battles for congressional leadership posts, Dixiecrat versus urban Democrats maneuvering for dominance on key congressional committees, and an energetic young President and his allies -- bent on making a lasting mark on history -- all influenced the outcome of the race.As the gap widens between election day in Indiana and final settlement of the contest, the two candidates fade into secondary roles, and eventually appear to be little more than pawns for the congressional and national figures who had pre-empted the contest for their own political purposes.

Song sharing in the northern house wren (Troglodytes aedon parkmanii)

Fouillard, Chantel Clarice January 2013 (has links)
This work provides an initial characterization of song sharing among males in the Northern House Wren (Troglodytes aedon parkmanii). A sample of 21 different males was studied at two different locations across two breeding seasons in southern Alberta, Canada. In total, 35,067 songs were analyzed to assess patterns of song sharing among males within and between study sites and in returning males between years. Virtually all syllable types (n=27) were shared among males. However, they were used to create very large repertoires of mostly unique song types. Absolute levels of song sharing among males was low but song sharing was higher among neighbouring males and decreased with increasing distance between males and across study sites. These patterns are discussed as they relate to important issues in the process of song learning, in the functions of large song repertoires in mate attraction and territory defense, and in the potential formation of dialects in this species. / xi, 102 leaves ; 29 cm

Of angels and demons: Virginia Woolfs homicidal legacy in Sylvia Plaths: The bell jar. / Of Angels and demons: Virginia Woolfs Homicidal legacy in Sylvia Plaths The bell jar

Davi Ferreira de Pinho 14 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation is a comparative study of the legacy left behind by the Victorians to the twentieth-century woman writers Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. Firstly, we shall discuss the controlling agencies governing the female body in the Victorian Era and the rise of an ideal, the Angel in the House. Secondly, we expose how Virginia Woolf apprehends and subverts this Victorian ideal, duplicating it into what we call the Demon in the House. At last we encourage the dialogue between Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf. Plath seems to write in accordance with Woolfs parameters, creating a literature of death, a literature that is the killer of the Angel. We use the concept of écriture féminine promoted by the French critics Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigaray, and Julia Kristeva, among others, to parallel a feminine space for writing to Woolfs search for a feminine literary tradition. Kristevas abjection, Foucaults power dynamics between the soul and the body, and Otto Ranks work on the double, shall foster our discussion on the death of the Angel in literature, especially in Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar (1963)

O mercado de balcão brasileiro: um estudo sobre as características e a regulamentação / The Brazilian over-the-counter market: a study of its characteristics and regulations

Aniela Fagundes Carrara 31 January 2013 (has links)
This study aims to analyze and discuss regulations and main characteristics of the Brazilian over-the-counter (OTC) market as a whole and propose some changes to make it safer. Within the OTC, business is conducted and structured according to wishes and needs of both parties, therefore contracts are not standardized, and there is no physical place to conduct negotiations, which can be made by phone or through an electronic system. In Brazil, this market is divided into two segments: the organized one, where contracts are at least made or registered in organs under the supervision of the Comissão de Valores Mobiliários (CVM) and not organized, in which contracts are not made or registered nor inspected by CVM, thus, this type of OTC trade is less subject to regulation. Within this segment, contracts of soja verde (green soybean), exchange input product, off-the-record CPR, and others that serve for financing Brazilian agricultural production. These contracts are subjected to many risks as they are signed by the parties and do not have any warranty offered by regulators regarding liquidation, in others words, they do not make use of the clearing house. Therefore, this study aims to elaborate suggestions to provide regulation to the over-the-counter market through unstructured interviews conducted with professionals who work directly with the OTC market and documentation of primary and secondary sources. It can be concluded that there are measures to be implemented in the segment at issue here, such as the standardization of some items traded by contracts, such as bargaining units and the months of expiration and also raise awareness of the importance of market agents to register their operations, which can make the not organized OTC market more transparent and secure.
