Procedimentos de projeto com base em retícula: estudo de casas de Eduardo de Almeida / Design procedures based on grids: study houses of Eduardo de Campos

Maria Isabel Imbronito 13 March 2008 (has links)
This essay presents houses made by Eduardo de Almeida between 1959 and 2007, which shows consistent project procedures for teaching and research in architecture, emphasizing the use of grids. It is considered that grids, by guiding the space and constructive organization, are reflected in the final results of architecture. Nevertheless, grids as a project procedure is submitted by a project intention, therefore different kinds of grids can be noticed while analyzing different architects. For a better understanding of grids, architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Louis Kahn are also briefly discussed.

An investigation into the occurrence of major abscess causing bacteria at the law meat exporting abattoir in the Northern Cape province of South Africa

Delport, Riëtte January 2003 (has links)
The main objectives of this study can be divided into four categories: a) The determination of the presence of abscesses in carcasses. b) The determination whether the abscesses are area bound. c) The determination of the causative bacteria which is responsible for abscess formation. d) The determination of the economic impact due to carcass rejections and trimmings. The research area consists of the biggest part of the Northern Cape province, which can further be divided into three main production areas, namely Groblershoop, Gordonia and Hantam. The Groblershoop area includes Groblershoop and the surrounding districts. The Gordonia area includes Upington and the Kalahari. The Hantam area includes Calvinia, Springbok and the other districts bordering the areas. All the carcasses were slaughtered at an export abattoir, namely LAW, which is situated in Groblershoop. The Upington veterinary laboratory bacteriologically cultured the abscess material and the results were processed and noted. The following results were prominent: a) It was determined that abscesses did occur in carcasses. b) It was determined that in the Hantam main production area the prevalence of abscesses is the highest, although the slaughter numbers are the lowest. c) It was determined that the bacterium that was responsible for most of the abscesses was Escherichia coli. d) It was determined that the total occurrence of bacteria did not have a significant economic impact, because there were not many carcass rejections due to abscesses. The economic impact, however, of the value of the total rejections, might become a problem.

Taverns, inns and alehouses? : an archaeology of consumption practices in the City of London, 1666-1780

Duensing, Stephanie N. January 2015 (has links)
This thesis set out to explore the changing nature of consumption patterns in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century London through the analysis of archaeological evidence previously excavated by the Museum of London Archaeology. The aim of this research was to address existing gaps and limitations within the existing methodology related to the excavation and analysis of these environments, to establish a more holistic method of approaching consumption practices from this period, and to explore the complexities which were being performed within the setting of these establishments. To do this, a typological system for artefact classification was developed which enabled the categorization of material by their fabric, form and their associated functions. The distribution patterns of the various types and functions across three sites and five establishments in the City of London were analyzed. The material was then assessed for patterns indicating changes in consumption. Linkages from these patterns are then made between historical themes and theoretical frameworks outlined within the thesis. Particular focus will be given to developing a better understanding of how these venues changed over time based on the degree of variation that can be perceived between the late seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries. By exploring the character of consumption practices, I will demonstrate how they work together to provide a more complete picture of the complex systems at work. During the course of this research, specific objectives have been achieved and conclusions reached which make original contributions to the wider dialogues surrounding how meaningful patterns of consumption can be perceived and interpreted through material goods from establishments of social or public consumption. The focus on the everyday materials from closed deposits related to clearance episodes (Pearce 2000) from these establishments and their how they relate to emergent and shifting patterns of social trends in consumption is what separates this thesis from other scholarship on these and similar spaces. Significantly, this research differs from the previous examples by attempting to detect social change across a variety of classes and in a variety of different settings, all brought together in relatively modest atmospheres of social and public consumption. This has allowed for both the subtle and the overt shifts in social patterns to be detected, and from there, conclusions are drawn regarding wider social ideology.

The family life cycle and family needs in a housing project : a case study of the Westview Garden Apartments, North Vancouver

Yamamoto, Tomizo January 1975 (has links)
The objective of this study is to discern how family needs in housing change through the stages of the family life cycle. The Westview Garden Apartments, a townhouse and apartment development in North Vancouver was chosen for conducting this study. For the collection of residents' behavioral data, a number of family member's daily activity log records were obtained through a series of interviews. The data were collected in the period from September 1973 to April 1974, during which time my family and I occupied one of the housing units in this project. The family life cycle is divided into eight stages, from arrival of the first baby to the elderly couple. The following activity patterns of a selected number of families in each stage were traced through the analysis of their activity log records; Sleeping, Eating, Housekeeping, Shopping, Children Playing, Evening Sitting, Socializing and Family Recreational Activities. From these activity patterns, together with the residents' opinions about their housing, and adding to this the author's own observation of the daily life in the sample project, the family's needs in each stage were discerned. After that the design of sample housing was examined in detail. The findings clearly indicate the variations in family needs affecting their housing requirements through the life cycle. The author concludes that the present housing system has difficulty in accommodating changing family needs. Many families are either forced to move or suffer from living in an incongruent residence. To improve this situation, two directions in future family housing are suggested. 1) An adaptable housing system should be developed. This can accommodate individual family's special needs and reflect the changing needs in their life cycle. Families should be able to assist in designing, building and altering their own houses without high costs or much skill. The author believes it is possible to produce such housing with advanced technology. 2) The present space distribution for daily family activities in private and public space, must be reconsidered. Many family needs which are now being met within the individual housing unit could be satisfied more satisfactorily in neighbourhood communal spaces. In future urban housing development, there is bound to be a large proportion of multiple dwellings. This demands new ways of communal living. The individual, in future housing, must have maximum power to control his own residence and his neighbourhood. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

Optimal production rates in opencast coal mining : a value driven approach

De Jongh, Iwan 26 June 2012 (has links)
From small exploration companies to multi-national mining houses all at some point in the project lifetime embark on evaluation studies where the most value-generating method of extracting the ore is investigated. Early phases in exploration projects will have the need for an order-of-magnitude estimation as to the scale of the potential operation, and advanced projects will have detailed mine and financial plans to guide them to execution. In both instances this thesis provides a method of optimising the mining rate to deliver the highest possible value to the mining company whilst considering the possible risks from changes in the market. This can be compared to the value the country gains from the exploitation of its natural resources to find a mutually beneficial solution. Guidelines for Greening (Renovation) of Existing Homes

Shaikh, Gilman Yusuf 12 1900 (has links)
This Thesis is aimed at evaluating the options of renovation for an existing residential building to make it more energy efficient. The various aspects in the basic structures of residential homes are discussed in order to help the user identify the areas of the house for which renovation is required to improve the energy efficiency of the building. These aspects include doors, roof and wall in addition to various systems of electrical wiring, mechanical systems of ventilation, heating and cooling and plumbing systems for the efficient flow of water throughout the house. The renovation options have been described in detail to provide as many possibilities to the user as possible. The building taken for renovation is a 1953 suburban home which has been awarded the honor of being the first building to be labeled as Zero Energy Home in its vicinity. This has made the home so efficient that its expenditure of energy has become equivalent to its energy generation, therefore, cancelling each other out and creating an estimate of zero energy.
