As Latin American evangelical theologians awoke to dependency on the North in the post-war period, they set the trajectory for a new contextual brand of evangelical Christianity. Ecuadorian Protestant theologian C. René Padilla (b. 1932) coined the term misión integral (integral mission), which first appeared on a public stage in Lausanne at the influential International Congress on World Evangelization of 1974—signalling both the rise of leadership from the Global South and a wider turn toward holistic mission within the global Protestant evangelical community. The concept of misión integral is an understanding of Christian mission that synthesizes the pursuit of justice with the offer of salvation. Padilla utilized the kingdom of God as the central theological motif in this synthesis. The thesis explores the dynamic interplay between Padilla and the global evangelical networks that formed, developed, and diffused misión integral. This first critical study of Padilla is structured thematically in order to provide a more detailed focus on each stage of this process. Earlier studies have largely framed misión integral as responding to Catholic theologies of liberation, beginning in the late 1960s or early 1970s. In contrast, I demonstrate that the origins of misión integral are found within a cluster of political and social forces reshaping post-war Latin America: rural-urban migration flows, the resulting complications of urbanization, and the rapid expansion of the universities, where Marxist ideas of revolutionary change presented a growing appeal to students. When Padilla became convinced of the inadequacy of his received North American evangelical theology of mission to meet such challenges, he began a search for theological materials with which he could address the Latin American context. In doing so, he sought to widen the parameters of an evangelical understanding of Christian mission. Padilla’s response was not purely Latin American nor driven by exclusively Latin American concerns. However, Padilla’s theology developed through a multidirectional and international conversation with a wide variety of interlocutors. Padilla became a metaphorical sponge—appropriating new theological perspectives from his undergraduate and graduate studies at Wheaton College in Illinois, his doctoral work in New Testament at the University of Manchester, the Presbyterian missionary-statesman, John A. Mackay, and the holistic tradition of American women missionaries through his closest colleague and wife Catharine Feser Padilla. This thesis explores these multidirectional conversations that shaped the concept of integral mission, and in doing so provides a corrective to current historiography. The process of developing the contours of integral mission would continue over the next two decades in a further series of transnational theological conversations. Particularly important were those Padilla conducted with the Peruvian Baptist Samuel Escobar and the Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana (Latin American Theological Fraternity), the British Anglican John R. W. Stott and the global evangelical movement, and the Argentine Methodist José Míguez Bonino and the ecumenical movement. Padilla’s theological networks cut both ways— influencing him and diffusing his influence to a wider Christian constituency. In focusing on these interlocutors, this thesis provides an assessment of the nature of Padilla’s influence upon the growing acceptance of integral mission within global evangelicalism. Today, the language of integral mission is being increasingly adopted by evangelical mission and relief organizations, evangelical political activists, official congress declarations, and Protestant ecclesial movements around the world.

Based on the missional experiences of the Wolaita Zone Kale Heywet Church (WZKHC) in Southern Ethiopia, this dissertation argues the indispensable nature of the holistic approach to mission in order to fulfil the missional responsibility of the church effectively. Balance must be kept between the two aspects of mission (evangelism and social concern) and they need to be integrated as working towards a single goal of proclaiming the Kingdom of God. In other words, neither of the two aspects of mission may to be magnified at the expense of the other nor should they be dichotomized as two unrelated parts. Mission emerges from the nature of God. Ever since the creation of the universe God has been at work and the church takes part in what he is doing. God's mission is holistic. Through Jesus Christ, He is working towards the redemption of the whole creation to its originally intended state. The research attempts to give attention to this concept as the Kingdom-oriented (Messio Dei) mission versus church-centered mission in light of holistic approach. To weigh the experience of the church (WZKHC) from the perspective of the Scripture, OT and NT analysis will be done in detail. Furthermore, the eschatological views pertinent to the final state of the creation and millennium will also be assessed in order to find out their contribution as a root of imbalance or polarization between evangelism and social concern. The aim of the study is to find out the factors that contribute to the imbalanced and non integrated approach to mission in the WZKHC in order to help the church regain the holistic perspective. I tried to analyze the presence of the concept of development and justice of Integral Mission on São Paulo soil, and for such analysis was taken as a research subject the First Baptist Church of São Paulo. This work was developed in the Post-Graduation Program in Religious Studies, and belongs to the line of research "Religion, Society and Culture". The methodology used in data collection was a bibliography review and field research through interviews. The questions that guided the research were: What is development and justice in Integral Mission? Is it posible to notice the presence of these concepts in the practice and theology of the First Baptist Church of São Paulo?After an analysis of Integral Mission and the researched church, we found the similarities and differences, as well as assumptions that justify these facts. In the first chapter it was presented the Integral Mission, History, Theology, and Method. In the second chapter the concepts of development and justice were developed. The last chapter presented the First Baptist Church of Paulo, and sought to establish a dialogue between the concept of Development and Justice of Integral Mission and theology and praxis of First Baptist Church of São Paulo. / No presente estudo sobre o tema: “Desenvolvimento e Justiça na Missão Integral: Uma análise crítica da presença da Teologia e Práxis da Missão Integral no Solo Paulistano” procura-se analisar a presença do conceito de desenvolvimento e justiça da Missão Integral no solo paulistano. Para tal análise tomou-se como sujeito de pesquisa a Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo. Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida no Programa de Pós- Graduação em Ciências da Religião, e pertence à linha de pesquisa “Religião, Sociedade e Cultura”. A metodologia adotada na coleta de dados foi de uma revisão bibliográfica e pesquisa de campo por meio de um roteiro de entrevista. Os questionamentos que nortearam a pesquisa foram: O que é desenvolvimento e Justiça na Missão Integral? É possível notar a presença desses conceitos na práxis e na teologia da Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo? Após uma análise da Missão Integral e da Igreja pesquisada, foi possível verificar as aproximações e distanciamentos, assim como hipóteses que justificassem esses fatos. No primeiro capítulo foi apresentada a Missão Integral, sua história, teologia e método. No segundo capítulo os conceitos de desenvolvimento e justiça foram trabalhados. O último capítulo apresentou a Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo; buscou estabelecer diálogo entre o conceito de Desenvolvimento e Justiça da Missão Integral e a teologia e práxis da Primeira Igreja Batista de São Paulo.

This dissertation traces the development of the Centro de Estudios Teológicos Interdisciplinarios (CETI) from its inception in Argentina in 1982 until 2002, when the first dean, Catalina Feser Padilla, stepped down. Born out of the self-theologizing of “radical evangelical” Protestant communities—Comunidad Internacional de Estudiantes Evangélicos, Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana, Escuela Bíblica de Villa María, and Comunidad Kairós—CETI has furthered misión integral within Latin America and beyond. Grounded in the history of CETI, this dissertation argues that CETI constitutes a generative model of theological formation for integral mission because of its theological, missiological, and pedagogical commitments: doing theology in response to context, a radical evangelical perspective, an integral mission intent, and a focus on the formation of all Christians through interdisciplinary dialogue, communal design, and implementation. Although studies have been done of the integral mission movement, this dissertation breaks new ground by focusing on CETI, which has been running continuously within Latin America since 1982. The dissertation is based on the historical analysis of primary sources housed in a virtual repository and in the offices of the Fundación Kairós, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Findings were corroborated through personal interviews and correspondence with key people involved in the creation and development of CETI. Chapter One introduces the research and clarifies key concepts. Chapters Two and Three portray the academic and ecclesial communities out of which CETI was generated. Chapter Four surveys the development of CETI and portrays the key role of its first dean, Catalina Feser Padilla. Chapter Five offers a theological, pedagogical, and institutional analysis of CETI along with narrative accounts that provide insight into the missional and ethical impact of the program. Chapter Six serves as a conclusion and refers to the reach of CETI beyond Latin America after 2011 through the auspices of the International Fellowship of Mission as Transformation. The final section raises critical questions for the ongoing development of CETI within Latin America, and for the expansion of theological formation for integral mission into other parts of the world.

This analysis will give birth to the Theology of Integral Mission in order to be seen whether these churches really felt the effects of this theology in this period. The pastoral practices of these churches to be observed by means of minutes, newsletters, conference proceedings, published papers, newsletters, documents of Mennonite Brethren churches of St. Paul and other materials that address the topic in question. The areas analyzed in the pastoral practice will be three, namely education through teaching Sunday school, social practice and worship (liturgy and preaching of the Word). They will also be presented the concepts of pastoral practice, Integral Mission and Christian praxis and, finally, proposals for a pastoral praxis in the light of Integral Mission, will be offered to the Mennonite Churches of St. Paul. / Esta pesquisa pretende analisar, durante o período de 2000 a 2010, três Igrejas Evangélicas Irmãos Menonitas, sendo elas a Primeira Igreja Evangélica Irmãos Menonitas de São Paulo, a Comunidade Cristão das Boas Novas e a Primeira Igreja Evangélica Irmãos Menonitas do Campo Limpo, situadas nos respectivos bairros de São Paulo, Planalto Paulista, Campo Belo e Campo Limpo. Esta análise se dará à luz da Teologia da Missão Integral, de modo que será observado se tais igrejas de fato sofreram influências desta teologia neste espaço de tempo. As práticas pastorais destas igrejas serão observadas por intermédio de atas, boletins, anais de congressos, trabalhos publicados, informativos, documentos das igrejas Irmãos Menonitas de São Paulo e outros materiais que abordem o tema em questão. Busca-se desenvolver o tema a partir da percepção dualista presente nesta soteriologia, bem como a concepção a-histórica da mesma e apresenta como contraponto a teologia Moltmanniana. O trabalho se desenvolve em três capítulos que buscam estruturar esta dissertação: No primeiro, descreve-se a pós-modernidade na visão de Zygmunt Bauman e a herança teológica herdada pelo protestantismo brasileiro de missão; no segundo, desenvolve-se a observação da crise de modelo soteriológico dualista presente na teologia tradicional protestante e no terceiro, a apresentação da teologia Moltmanniana na prática de um seguimento de Cristo e da Missão Integral, propondo uma visão que envolva o ser humano em sua integralidade. / [en] This research focuses on the critical study of soteriology traditionally taught by Brazilian Protestantism focused on Mission. We seek to develop this critique from the dualistic perception present in this soteriology as well as ahistorical conception of it. Moltmanniana theology is presented as a counterpoint. The work is developed in three chapters that seek to structure this thesis: In the first chapter, it is described the postmodern vision of Zygmunt Bauman and theological heritage inherited by Brazilian Protestantism focused on Mission. In the second, it is developed the observation of the dualistic soteriological model crisis in traditional Protestant theology. Finally, the third chapter presents Moltmanniana theology in a practical way concerning concepts of Following Christ and Integral Mission, proposing a vision that involves the human being in his entirety.

[pt] O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar algumas características consequentes da salvação líquida sobre a espiritualidade cristã, observando a deturpação causada e potencialização pelas características da contemporaneidade, que nos desumanizam. Busca-se desenvolver o tema a partir, da pesquisa sobre a espiritualidade cristã, unida a uma investigação sobre a contemporaneidade, num primeiro momento. Em seguida, diante da percepção da espiritualidade cristã deturpada, fruto de uma salvação líquida, apresentamos a espiritualidade da Missão Integral, como caminho para a humanização. No capítulo quatro apresentamos a pneumatologia do teólogo alemão Jürgen Moltmann como possibilidade de enriquecimento da teologia da Missão Integral em sua caminhada rumo a humanização do ser humano. Por fim, apresentamos o que chamamos de espiritualidade cristã missional e humanizadora, que nos torna seres humanos vitalizados pelo Espírito da Vida. / [en] I introduce you my job wich objective is to do a investigation about some consequential characteristics of liquid salvation on Christian spirituality, observing the misrepresentation caused by the characteristics of contemporaneity, which dehumanizes us. At the first moment, I seek to develop the theme from the research on Christian spirituality, together with an investigation about contemporaneity. Then, in face of the perception of distorted Christian spirituality, fruit of the liquid salvation, I show you the spirituality of the Integral Mission, as a path to humanization. In chapter four I present the pneumatology of the german theologian - Jürgen Moltmann as a possibility of enriching the theology of the Integral Mission in the direction for the humanization of the human being. Finally, I present what we call of Spirituality Missional Christian and Humanizing, which makes us human beings vitalized by the Spirit of Life.
