How First-Generation Students Spend Their Time: Clues to Academic and Social IntegrationRudd, Heather Renee 24 May 2006 (has links)
This study explored the activities in which first-generation students engage that might promote academic and social integration. Additionally, differences in activities by race were examined. Participants included fifteen Caucasian and fifteen Multicultural first-generation, first-year students. Respondents maintained logs of their daily academic and social activities for a two-week period during their first semester on campus. The logs yielded both quantitative and qualitative data.
The results revealed several interesting findings. First, first-generation students engaged in a number of academic behaviors that often contribute to academic integration and success. Although they were not always confident in their abilities as a student, first-generation participants attended most of their classes, completed assignments, participated in class discussions, and visited their professors to seek assistance. Second, although informants seemed to devote more time to academic pursuits, they did take time to enjoy conversations and activities with peers and attend meetings and events on campus. Third, Caucasian and Multicultural first-generation students were nearly equally involved in academic pursuits. However, Caucasian students focused on developing personal relationships with those who support their success, while Multicultural students focused more on results and achievement. Fourth, both Caucasian and Multicultural students found ways to be involved socially on campus, but Caucasian students were more comfortable describing their time spent out of the classroom.
In general, the students in this study were not as much at risk as results from prior research on first generation students has suggested they might be. In their first semester, they found ways to participate successfully in the academic and social environments of college. / Master of Arts

The impact of the economic partnership agreement for regional integration in the Southern African custom union member states / Leonard NkotsoeNkotsoe, Leonard January 2011 (has links)
The Cotonou Agreement introduces new fundamental principles with respect to trade
between the European Union and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries relative to
the Lome Convention: in particular non-reciprocal preferential market access for ACP
economies will only last until 1 January 2008. After that date, it will be replaced by a string
of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) meant to progressively liberalise trade in a
reciprocal way. The progressive removal of barriers to trade is expected to result in the
establishment of Free Trade Agreements between the EU and ACP regional groups in
accordance with the relevant WTO rules and help further existing regional integration efforts
among the ACP.
Most discussions of economic development in Africa focus on regional integration as an
important element. From the first post-colonial meetings, African leaders emphasised
regional integration as a key element of their strategies. In the most recent African plan for
economic development, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), regional
and sub regional approaches to development are again a key element. The plan sees the small
size of countries, low incomes, and consequently limited markets as a limit to economies of
scale, thus denying attractive returns to investors and in so doing constraining the
diversification of production and exports. This is the key reason for pooling resources in
order to enhance regional economic integration.
The decision by Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland to sign the interim EPA came in the result
of SACU's failure to negotiate as a bloc with a view to sign the EPA.
In this research, the following statistical techniques were applied: t-test, f-test, regression
analysis and its forecasts model for seven Southern African Development Community-
Economic Partnership Agreement (SADC EPA) group trading with the European Union, is
used to simulate the opportunities and benefits of EPAs for countries of the SADC region.
Simulation results show that EPAs with the EU are welfare-enhancing for SADC overall,
leading also to substantive increases in real GDP. For most countries further gains may arise
from intra-SADC liberalization. / Thesis (M.Com.(Economics) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2011

När flyktingarna kom och berikade byn : En undersökning om hur integration kan bli hjälpt av två kristna församlingar i ett litet samhälle i mellersta NorrlandHafstad-Eriksson, Marie January 2016 (has links)
This is a study of two Christian churches in the north of Sweden in a small village called Stöde. In Stöde there are about 3000 people and the village has been a refugee center since the year 2010. At first the new people had some difficulties to get closed to the people from Stöde. The two Christian churches started up some Swedish education and became a meeting point for the immigrants. In my study I look fore if the two Christian churches can be a good way to integration. I also look if the two Christian churches will get some things out of the work with the immigrants. I have study the time from 2010 to 2015. In the study I interviewed one priest from the Swedish church and one pastor from the church of Euqumenia, Bethel. Both churches exist in Stöde. The immigrants come from different places and many are Muslims but it`s no problem because everyone is welcomed to both of the Christian churches. Perhaps is it so that the immigrants make the small village of Stöde alive again. And the both churches in Stöde has made a good work and tried to make the immigrants integrated in Sweden.

Roma and the contradictions of European inclusion policies : citizens associated with European societiesSzilvási, Marek January 2015 (has links)
The research addresses the relevant contradictions of European Roma inclusion policy-making. The situation which many Roma in European societies experience nowadays combines deprivation and exclusion on the grounds of civil and political recognition, cultural identity and minority rights, and socio-economic justice in (re-)distributing resources. The recent European call for specific Roma-targeted policies is also articulated in these three discourses of inclusion, whether these policies should be based on their distinctive ethnic identity to be emancipated, legally- and politically-defined citizenship to be enforced, or socio-economic precariousness to be improved. Each of these three discourses addresses different type of inequalities; sometimes they can complement each other in promoting substantial equality, whereas at other times one politics of inclusion can reinforce the existing inequalities of another type. These domains are closely connected with and burden one another reciprocally – in the sense that better solutions of the problems of one domain can increase the problems in another and well-intended policies can thus turn into new forms of exclusion. The research confirmed the uncertainty among international policy-makers regarding what should serve as a conceptual base for European Roma inclusion policies. It furthermore traced a lack of attempts to reconcile the identities of passive service recipients and those of actively claiming citizens. It also revealed that most of the policies are designed within patron-client relationship where the benefits of patrons exceed the benefits of activated Roma. Finally, it proposes to recalibrate inclusion policies towards accentuating socio-economic rights and concludes that integration through-and-to low-skilled job does not meet the objective of inclusion.
