Sociedade sambaquieira, comunidades marítimas / Sambaquieira Society, Maritime Comunities

Calippo, Flávio Rizzi 08 June 2010 (has links)
Using as theoretical reference approaches focused on the Maritime Archaeology (MUCKELROY, 1978; ADAMS, 1998, 2002), on the Maritime Anthropology (MALINOWSKI, 1986 [1922]; DIEGUES, 1998) and on studies of Environmental Perception (INGOLD, 2000), we tried to develop and test the hypothesis that, notwithstanding the evidence of a cultural unity that allowed for the establishment of an ample shellmound society, people of the shellmounds were organized in regional coastal communities. These would have developed and organized in different maritime communities, both coastal and fluvial, in consequence of the different ways in which they (dialectically) related with the environment. To support such hypothesis a model was elaborated predicting underwater sites, an analyses was realized of the isotopic composition of strontium (HÖLZL, 1997; PRICE et al., 2000; BENTLEY et al, 2003; HODELL, 2004), of carbon and of oxygen (KEITH, 1964; COSTA, 2000; MIZUTA, 2007) present (in samples of shells and human bones) in shellmounds located along the medium and low Vale do Ribeira, as well as in sites at the central coast (Baixada Santista and Bertioga) and north (Ubatuba) of the state of São Paulo. The evidences were correlated to the theoretical approach through a proposal elaborated from the study of the formation processes of the archaeological record developed by Schiffer (1972). Based on these analyses, beyond differentiating the people from the medium Ribeira from the coastal shellmound people, it became possible, among other things, to propose a cultural borderline between the ensembles of sites of the south/center coast of São Paulo and the shellmounds of northern São Paulo and southern Rio de Janeiro. Specifically with regard to the shellmounds of Cananéia, the isotopic analysis of shells evinced, yet, that the locals and goals of collecting were more related to cultural aspects than to the simple exploration of the more abundant resources.

Genesis and organic matter chemistry of sombric horizons in subtropical soils (Paraná State, Brazil) / Gênese e química da matéria orgânica de horizontes sômbricos em solos subtropicais (Paraná, Brasil)

Mariane Chiapini 31 January 2017 (has links)
Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. Therefore, it is important to understand the stability of SOM, which is related to several processes. Its intrinsic properties may be related to its stability, for example black carbon is considered to be relatively resistant to degradation. In most soils, the dark horizons coincide with the superficial layers or horizons due to the greater accumulation of organic matter, but in the southern states of Brazil, the presence of soils with dark subsurface horizons is frequently observed. The dark subsurface horizon of these soils are similar to a sombric horizon. Aspects about its origin, formation and preservation have not yet been fully elucidated. The objective of this work is to understand the formation of \'sombric\' horizons in soils of the region from Tijucas do Sul (Paraná, Brazil). Five soil profiles were described and collected, from which three originate from a toposequence and contained a \'sombric\' horizon (P1-P3), a reference soil that is representative of the area (P5) and an intermediate soil (P4) that showed morphology between the reference soil and the soils with a \'sombric\' horizon. To this end SOM is studied for its molecular composition by the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (pyrolysis-GC-MS). In addition, 13C isotopic composition (δ13C) and phytolytic composition were studied in order to understand paleoclimatic conditions. These results will be related to past environmental conditions using 14C dating techniques, and supported by classical soil analysis. The samples of the horizons were submitted to the SOM chemical fractionation, generating two fractions: extractable fraction with NaOH (EXT) and residue (RES). The morphology of the profiles showed an intense biological activity in A horizons and a wide distribution of microfragments of charcoals. The lateral continuity of \'sombric\' horizons in toposequence soils was also observed, which differentiated them (P1-P3) from buried A horizons. The distribution of SOM in the fractions studied was the same for the five profiles studied: EXT> RES. Products related to wildfires such as polyaromatics (PAHs; BC) were found in all profiles, but in greater relative abundance in the \'sombric\' horizons, indicating a higher incidence of fire during the formation of these horizons and these compounds can be related to the maintenance of dark color of the \'sombric\' horizons. In relation to the paleoclimatic conditions it was observed that the dark subsurface horizons were developed during the Mid-Holocene under vegetation composed mainly by C4 grasses with shrubs, evidencing a drier climate corresponding to a higher fire incidence.

Avaliação do estoque e composição isotópica do carbono do solo no Acre. / Evaluation of the stock and isotopic composition of carbon in the soil of Acre.

Antonio Willian Flores de Melo 29 January 2004 (has links)
The State of Acre is located in the extreme west of Brazil, occupying an area that had great geological influence from the mountain chain of Andes. The soils present pedologic characteristics very different from the ones found in the remaining of Brazilian Amazon, prevailing Inceptisols, Alfisols, and Ultisols, generally eutrophic, young and little weathered. Not much is known about the impact of the use of the earth on the organic matter in these soil conditions. This work had as objectives to estimate the stock of carbon of the main classes of soils of the State of Acre and to compare with studies carried out for the Amazon area. To evaluate the effect of the change in the use and covering of the earth on the stock of carbon and isotopic composition of the organic matter in two soil conditions in Acre. To reach the objectives the work was performed in two scales, local and regional. The first case estimated the stocks of carbon up to one meter deep, using a map of soils in the scale 1:1.000.000 and analytic data of pedologic profiles accomplished in the area. The second case determined the concentration of carbon, d13C and density of the soil of samples collected at 12-15, 20 year-old pasture lands, and forest in the depths 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 50-60, 70-80 e 90-100 cm, in Ultisols (well drained) and Alfisols (poorly drained). The soils of Acre store around 1 Pg of carbon in the first meter of depth, around 75% of this value is concentrated on the first 30 cm. The soils of Acre present smaller concentration of carbon (6.5 kg m-2, average) when compared with the average of the soils of the Amazon, although they present better fertility. The main reason for this result is the large rate of incident decomposition on these soils due to the constant drought cycles and moistening. These cycles are associated with the physical characteristics (mainly structure) incipient of these soils that impede the percolation of the pluvial waters saturating very quickly and favoring superficial flow off. As the water concentrates on the surface of the soil, it tends to evaporate easily. The effect of the change in the covering and land use on stock and dynamics of the organic matter of the soils happens differently in Ultisols (well drained) and Alfisols (poorly drained). In the two conditions of soils there was a tendency to decrease the total stock of carbon and increase carbon of C4 origin, however, in Ultisols it was very stressed. Pasture lands on Alfisols presented larger stock of carbon (average of 8.4 kg m-2 to 1 m), however, the data of d13C showed that most of carbon was remaining of the forest and a small proportion was introduced by the pasture land (< 40 % to 0-5 cm in 20 yr old pasture). The inverse fact occurred with pasture lands on Ultisols that presented smaller stock (average of 6.4 kg m-2 to 1 m) and great proportion of carbon of the pasture land (> 70 % to 0-5 cm in 20 yr old pasture). This result suggests two conclusions. 1) the rate of carbon decomposition in Alfisols is smaller than in Ultisols, and the time of residence of the organic matter is larger. Ultisols tend to lose carbon more readily with the change in the land use and covering of the land. 2) pasture productivity is low on Alfisols, indicating that besides soil fertility other characteristics, as structure, should be considered in order to establish the management practice to obtain the best output from the grass.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Leandro.pdf: 1098668 bytes, checksum: d672d3888ee8760a698a4ba11e3e1121 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012 / Na costa brasileira, o peixe-boi marinho, Trichechus manatus, apresenta distribuição fragmentada e restrita a algumas regiões com características ecológicas distintas. / On the Brazilian coast, the manatee Trichechus manatus has a fragmented distribution, restricted to a few regions with different ecological characteristics. It is considered a generalist and opportunistic herbivore, consuming a wide range of vegetation from rivers, seas and estuaries, however, information about the ecology of the species in the country is scarce. The aim of this study was to study the trophic ecology of T. manatus in Brazil through stable isotopes. Samples of teeth (n=22) and bones (n=21) of stranded manatees and plants were collected in the northeastern region of the country for the analysis of stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). The animals were grouped in five regions: Alagoas, Ceara, Maranhão, Paraíba (that includes individuals from Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte) and Piauí. The plants, obtained from these same areas, were categorized in four main groups: macroalgae, mangroves, seagrasses and saltmarsh plants. The bayesian mixture model for stable isotopes SIAR (Stable Isotopes Analysis in R) was used to estimate the proportions of the sources in the diets of the groups of manatees. There were no differences in the values of δ13C and δ15N among teeth and bones, age classes or between sexes. There were, however, regional differences in isotopic compositions of manatees, especially for δ13C. Carbon stable isotope compositions ranged from depleted in 13C in Maranhão (- 15,7±1.6‰), to more enriched in Ceará (-7.0±0.5‰), whereas Alagoas (-9.3±0.4‰), Piauí (-9.3±0.6‰) and Paraíba (-11.4±2.8‰) presented intermediate values. Manatees from Paraíba had higher 15N values (8.8±1.2‰) than those from other regions. The mixture model also indicated regional variation on the manatees diet. Animals from Ceará feed almost exclusively on seagrasses (97.3%), while manatees from Alagoas and Paraíba graze mainly upon seagrasses (69.4%) and macroalgae (64.4%), respectively. Individuals from Maranhão were feeding mainly on saltmarsh plants (68.7%), despite mangrove dominate the area. Individuals from Piauí, on the other hand, had a more diversified diet, where seagrasses (28.5%), saltmarsh plants (27.1%), macroalgae (24.0%) and mangroves (20.4%) were assimilated in similar proportions. This study i the first to use stable isotopes do investigate the feeding ecology of manatees in South America. The spatial variation in the manatee’s diet demonstrates that proper conservation strategies for the species should include the maintenance of different macrophyte habitats along the northeastern Brazil.

Freshwater sponges (Porifera) produce siliceous spicules with taxonomic and paleoenvironmental value. Sediments with high concentrations of spicules, called spongilite, are present in NW Minas Gerais (Brazil). They formed during the last 28000 years. In order to investigate the reliability of these deposits to record past environmental changes, we proceeded to two kinds of calibration, from sponges currently produced in a small lake of NW Minas Gerais (Lagoa verde). (1) The ecology of M. spinata, the only sponge of the lake, was monitored over its annual cycle. The sponge produced 4 spicules categories in relation with seasonal changes in precipitation, evaporation, water temperature and dissolved silicon content. These relationships confirm previous paleoenvironmental reconstructions from fossil spicule assemblages. (2) The oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of biogenic silica is commonly used as a paleoenvironmental proxy. This proxy has never been calibrated for fresh water sponge spicules. We checked whether M. spinata formed its spicules in isotopic equilibrium with the lake water. The δ18O signature of the spicules showed a positive thermo-dependent relationship with the δ18O of the lake water, conversely to what was expected for an equilibrium precipitation. This result suggests that a biological kinetic fractionation occurred. This kinetic fractionation needs to be systematically characterized for paleoenvironmental reconstruction purpose.

This work focuses on the determination of the carrier diffusion length in two wide bandgap semiconductors: the ternary alloy ZnMgO and diamond. This determination has been achieved by using of ZnMgO/ZnO/ZnMgO and 13C/12C/13C heterostructures containing ZnO or 12C collecting wells. Their transverse section was scanned by CL spectroscopy with a nanometer scale resolution in excitation. The effective excess carrier diffusion length is deduced from the evolution of the well emission intensity with the distance between the excitation impact and the well.In ZnMgO, the value at 300 K is 55 nm, obtained from a cleaved cross section. It is close to the bulk material diffusion and is attributed to a mixed diffusion of excitons/free carriers. A decrease of down to 8 nm is observed in the thinnest portions of cross sections shaped by focused ion beam (FIB). This effect is attributed to non-radiative surface recombinations. These thin slabs appear of great interest to enhance the spatial resolution of CL images. In diamond, the exciton diffusion at 20 K exhibits a slight dependence on the incident electron energy. This indicates that the exciton diffusion length is around 15 µm in 13C bulk diamond. The values decrease down to 3.3 µm at 118 K.Finally, we highlighted the formation of polyexcitons in diamond by increasing the electron-hole pairs density either by the excitation power, or by the spatial confinement of excitons in thin 12C wells.

Variations climatiques et variations du cycle hydrologique aux basses latitudes au cours du Quaternaire : une approche combinant modèle et données / Climate and low latitude water cycle variations during the Quaternary : a model-data approach

Extier, Thomas 18 October 2019 (has links)
Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles are recorded in various climatic archives from high to low latitudes. The EPICA Dome C ice core provides a high-resolution record over the last 800 ka of δ18Oatm (i.e. δ18O of atmospheric O2) which combines past variations of the low latitude water cycle and of the biosphere productivity. In absence of annual layer counting, this proxy can be used for orbital dating in association with the June 21st insolation at 65°N to build an ice core chronology. However a lag of 6 ka between the δ18Oatm and the insolation, classically observed during glacial-interglacial terminations, is applied to the entire record during the chronology construction. This lag and the complexity of the δ18Oatm signal are the main reasons why the ice core chronology presents a high 6 ka uncertainty which limits their interpretation, jointly with other paleoclimate archives, in terms of past climate and environmental variations. To solve this issue I have developed a new ice core chronology based on the relation between the δ18Oatm and the δ18Ocalcite of east-asian speleothems, using new isotope measurements allowing for the first time a complete record over the last 800 ka at Dome C. This new chronology reduces the uncertainties compared to the actual ice core chronology strongly based on δ18Oatm and shows a better sequence of events between the high and low latitudes records. Then, I have developed a model to reproduce the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 to address the lack of quantitative interpretations of this proxy and to check our assumption of synchronicity with the δ18Ocalcite over several climatic cycles. To reproduce the variations of the δ18Oatm, it was necessary to couple the intermediate complexity climate model iLOVECLIM and the vegetation model CARAIB. Finally, the δ18Oatm variations simulated with the new coupled model over several thousand years are in phase with the insolation of the Northern hemisphere (except during Heinrich events) and with low latitudes δ18Ocalcite variations. This can be explained by changes in the low latitude water cycle related to changes in the isotopic composition of meteoric water used by the terrestrial biosphere during photosynthesis.

[pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DA MATÉRIA ORGÂNICA PARTICULADA NA TRANSIÇÃO BAÍA DE GUANABARA OCEANO COSTEIRO USANDO MARCADORES ISOTÓPICOS E MOLECULARES / [en] CHARACTERIZATION OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC MATTER IN A GUANABARA BAYCOASTAL OCEAN TRANSITION USING ISOTOPIC AND MOLECULAR MARKERS

JULIANNA MARIA DE ALMEIDA MARTINS 17 July 2020 (has links)
[en] Suspended particulate organic matter (POM) present between Guanabara Bay and the coastal ocean was characterized by elemental composition (C and N), isotopic ratios (delta13C and delta15N) and molecular markers (sterols, n-alcohols and fatty acids) in two periods (summer and fall) along a transect and a fixed station. Elemental (C/N of 5 to 23) and isotopic (delta13C= -27.7 to -16.2 per thousand and delta15N = 2.4 to 11.2 per thousand) signatures were typical for the predominance of planktonic organic matter. Fatty acids (totals of 12.08 ± 7.78 microgram L–1 in summer and 22.06 ± 1.75 microgram L–1 in the fall for the transect, and 13.47 ± 5.15 microgram L–1 in summer and 15.84 ± 3.61 microgram L–1 in the fall for the fixed station) were presente as short-chain, monoand poly-unsaturated compounds. Total sterol concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 7.32 microgram L–1, with the predominance of cholesterol and phytosterols. n-alcohols were a minor component (0.01 to 5.67 microgram L–1 ). The multi-proxy approach revealed an overwhelming contribution of autochthonous POM sources, reflecting the influence of the Guanabara Bay outflow on ecological processes in the transition zone considered herein. Fecal contribution to POM was also identified, albeit as a less significant component, possibly due to dilution caused by autochthonus sources or degradation of fecal markers. Moreover, the terrestriallyderived POM was not exported from the bay and, therefore, must experience an accumulation process in the inner bay sediments. This supports the need to quantify such continental contribution to better establish the carbon balance in the bay.
