The process of Individuation in Willy Loman : A Jungian Archetypal Literary Analysis of the Protagonist in Arthur Miller’s Play Death of a Salesman Compared to the Classical Hero of Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey

This study is an archetypal literary analysis of Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman and Homer’s The Odyssey. The analysis aims to demonstrate how Arthur Miller’s protagonist, Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman demonstrates several stages of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of the individuation process, similar to Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey. This is done by identifying set archetypes and stages of Jung’s individuation process, the persona, the shadow, the anima, and the self. After that, the stages are applied to both Miller’s play and Homer’s epic poem. The analysis shows that both protagonists demonstrate and complete Jung’s individuation process. Willy Loman completes a symbolic journey, whereas Odysseus completes a physical one.

Possuidor de um vasto conhecimento, Medeiros invadiu também o mundo jornalístico, onde se exercitou assiduamente até o final de sua vida. Desse modo, teve a direção de O Fígaro e O Clarim, além de ter escrito em periódicos famosos da época como, por exemplo, o vespertino carioca A Notícia. Nele, o jornalista colaborou muito, desdobrando-se em várias seções, tais como: "Notas", assinando como "Rifiúfio Singapura"; "Ecos", assinando como "Max", e também "Crônica literária", escrevendo com o pseudônimo "J. dos Santos", o seu único responsável. Nessa última colaboração, J. dos Santos informava semanalmente lançamentos de livros, com o intuito provável de persuadir o público leitor a adquiri-los, além de naturalmente divulgar iniciativas editoriais. Em 12 anos de publicação da "Crônica literária" (1897-1908), foram registradas exatas 981 resenhas, sendo que, em raros momentos, J. dos Santos usou seu espaço com outras finalidades. Ademais, o jornalista não apenas noticiava livros de vários gêneros, mas também criticava com grande sensibilidade, mostrando-se, consequentemente, um crítico bastante perspicaz e capacitado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi o enfoque sistemático de todo o trabalho do crítico no período da mencionada seção de A Notícia, observando inevitavelmente o seu método crítico. Além da indexação de todos os textos da "Crônica literária", resenharam-se 32 obras do escritor Medeiros e Albuquerque com o intuito de divulgar sua diversificada produção artística / Abstract: The author Medeiros e Albuquerque (1867-1934) was born in Pernambuco. He often wrote not only literary works, but also other types, revealing thereby a very large production. Possessing a vast knowledge, Medeiros also invaded the world of journalism and dedicated himself until the end of his life. Thus, he had the direction of O Fígaro and O Clarim, and wrote for some famous newspapers of his time, for example, the Rio evening A Notícia. In it, the journalist contributed much, unfolding in several sections, such as "Notas", signing as "Rifiúfio Singapura"; "Ecos", signing as "Max", and "Crônica literária" writing, solely, under the pseudonym "J. dos Santos". In this latest collaboration, J. dos Santos reported weekly book launches, probably all with the aim of persuading the readers to acquire them, and naturally promote publishing initiatives. In 12 years of publication of the "Crônica literária" (1897-1908), there were accurate 981 reviews, and, eventually, J. dos Santos used his space for other purposes. Moreover, the journalist have not only reported books of various genres, but also criticized them with great sensitivity, being therefore a very insightful and knowledgeable critic. The dissertation summarises the life and work of renowned Czech Jewish writer, translator, journalist and scientist Jiří Weil (1900-1959) in the reference period 1939-1959. It presents the results of research conducted in more than twenty, both domestic and foreign archives (Literary Archive of the Museum of National Literature, Security Services Archive, National Archive, Archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague, Beroun Archive, Central Military Archive, Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and others), accompanied by the accounts of selected eyewitnesses, placing events in a narrower historical context and presenting the life and work of Jiří Weil from a hitherto unknown perspective. Modern critics and biographers often cite the need for a new study of Hawthorne and his wife, for a study of sex and sex symbolism in Hawthorne, and for a study of the love element in general in his works. Such aspects of his fiction have been all but totally overlooked by earlier critics who confined their comments largely to the sin and isolation of the characters. This paper cannot hope to satisfy any one of these needs, but does undertake to look at Hawthorne's treatment of the remedial effects of heterosexual love in lives where such love operates, and of the disaster which ensues in lives where it is excluded.

He is now completely isolated from humanity by his own choice, from God by the incongruity of his presumptive claims, and from himself by the absence or any further self-comnunication on the basis of honest humility.

The Rape of Hylas in Theocritus Idyll 13 and Propertius 1.20

The Hylas myth, in which the eponymous boy beloved of Heracles is raped by water nymphs while drawing water from a spring, seems to have been a wildly popular subject among the literary circles of Augustan Rome. Indeed the rape of Hylas had been so ubiquitous that Virgil himself could claim that no one was unfamiliar with it (Georgics 3.6: cui non dictus Hylas puer?). Yet despite this declaration, few renditions of the Hylas myth survive. Propertius 1.20, an Augustan era Latin poem in elegiac couplets, is one extant version of the rape of Hylas. While the similarities between this poem and Theocritus Idyll 13, a short Hellenistic hexameter poem composed well before Propertius, have long been observed by modern scholars, there has been no sustained effort to connect these two accounts of the Hylas myth conclusively. Instead, what little scholarly work that has been done on these poems either appraises them in isolation, or seeks a non-Theocritean template behind Propertius 1.20. With this thesis, I aim to prove definitively that Theocritus Idyll 13 is the major model for Propertius 1.20. In my first chapter, I provide a brief overview of the rape of Hylas throughout all of Greek and Latin literature. In my second chapter, I examine Theocritus Idyll 13 with particular attention to its wit, humour, and narrative. In my third chapter, I offer a thorough literary-critical appreciation of Propertius 1.20, establishing links to Idyll 13 wherever possible. Finally, in my conclusion, I consider the possible influence of other poets and mythographers upon Propertius, before appraising 1.20 both independently and within the context of the Propertian Monobiblos. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / The rape of Hylas is a minor event occurring during the famed expedition of the Argo. A handsome boy named Hylas, who is the beloved of the mighty hero Heracles, fetches water during a brief landing on their voyage to Phasis. As Hylas draws water from a spring, water nymphs abduct him. Heracles, now bereaved, rampages madly in futile search while the other Argonauts sail on without him. Such are the general details of the Hylas myth. This thesis examines two versions of the Hylas myth, the first by Theocritus, a third century BC Hellenistic poet, and the second by Propertius, a first century BC Roman poet. My objective is to prove definitively that these two accounts are connected, with Propertius having modelled his treatment on the rendition provided by Theocritus. This will be achieved through a thorough literary-critical appreciation, with particular focus on wit, humour, and narrative.

A Deconstruction of Puritan Ideology Through the Works of John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson

Originated by Jacques Derrida, deconstruction analyzes the relationship between text and meaning. This thesis applies Derrida's theory of deconstruction to three early American Puritan figures: John Winthrop, Mary Rowlandson, and Anne Bradstreet. By questioning the conceptual distinctions known as oppositions in Puritan ideology through the works of these aforementioned individuals, this thesis questions and corrupts the binaries within each text used. The emergence of new meaning through a deconstruction of Puritan ideology establishes a valid site from which to explore radical, repressed, historical, cultural, and theological narratives of religious prosperity. By enforcing narratives from Derrida's Of Grammatology, post-structuralist ideology will presume no absolute truths within a text; therefore, ambiguity is pertinent in a deconstructive critical examination. The argument in this thesis is then—through a deconstructive critical examination of Puritan ideology, are similarities present though different mediums of linguistic discourse, and can this thesis formally decenter the transcendental signifiers present. The critical approach to deconstructing each medium of discourse analytically breaks down the systematic organization of language as a whole and overturns structuralist oppositions—as to displace the authority, and formally find new importance in a text.
