This dissertation, about the literary criticism of Benedito Nunes, divided in two parts, is based on a variety of textual genres (attempts to write novels, poems, aphorisms, chronicles on science, poetry and philosophy, interviews, criticism on poetry and novels). In other words, this study is about Nunes? first texts on some newspapers of Belém do Pará: "Supplement of Art and Literature", on the newspaper Folha do Norte (1946-1951), in which the author starts his career as a literary critic, also writing on magazines such as Encontro (1948) and Norte (1952). This study is also based on Benedito Nunes? writings on other newspapers of Brazil, such as the "Sunday Supplement" of Jornal do Brasil and on the supplements of journals like O Estado de São Paulo and O Estado de Minas Gerais (texts containing analysis of poems, novels and philosophy); and, still, Nunes? first books: O mundo de Clarice Lispector (1966) and O dorso do tigre (1969). The latter causes the writer to be considered one of the exponents of modern literary criticism in the second half of the twentieth century in Brazil, mainly of the works of art of writers who published from the decade of 1940 on, namely, Clarice Lispector, Guimarães Rosa and João Cabral de Melo Neto, just to name a few. The compilation of the texts published on journals, besides enabling the identification of the main readings of Benedito Nunes, which were incorporated to the conception of his criticism, considering some Christian philosophers as Saint Thomas Aquinas, Pascal, and, particularly, a precursor of existentialism, Kierkegaard, which will be constant in the analysis of the Brazilian author, makes it possible to trace the intellectual path followed by Benedito Nunes, specially as a literary critic. The writer will, lately, add the ideas of Sartre and Heidegger to his analysis. Specifically considering Heidegger, who Nunes studies throughout his whole life, it is possible to see the ontological conception of artistic creation by verbal language, which, to the German philosopher, corresponds to the foundation of the self by the word. Regarding the division of this study, the first part contains the intellectual path Benedito Nunes followed, as well as analysis of the material compiled from the newspapers and from the two books of this Brazilian critic. The second part contains a sample of the material which was compiled / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutora em Teoria e História Literária

Multiculturalism as a challenge in contemporary Finnish picturebooks:reimagining sociocultural categoriesPesonen, J. (Jaana) 25 November 2015 (has links)
Abstract
This study focuses on representations of multiculturalism in children’s literature. Children’s books are seen as cultural products which do not only reflect but also construct our social reality. The research consists of four peer-reviewed articles and a summary part. This interdisciplinary research is theoretically positioned in both cultural studies and social sciences, with the key concepts of multiculturalism, identity, ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. More specifically, the study contributes to the discussions of multicultural children’s literature as both pedagogy and art.
The methodological-theoretical framework is based on the social constructionist approach. Language is understood as socially, historically, sociopolitically and ideologically constructed; hence performativity, discourse and representation are considered as key concepts of the analysis. Intersectionality functions as both a theoretical framework which guides the understanding of multiculturalism, as well as an analytical tool for examining the data. The data consists of children’s picturebooks which are analysed by applying the method of close reading. Intersectional analysis also makes the numerous sociocultural categories, i.e. ethnicity, nationality, gender, language, dis/ability and age visible in the studied books.
The results show that representations of multiculturalism are connected to the ideas of nationality, which again relates to the ideas of belonging and exclusion – often meaning Finnish/non-Finnish division. The representations of multiculturalism can reproduce and circulate discourses of differentiation, and thus legitimise exclusion and marginalisation of people. However, picturebooks can also display representations of multiculturalism that challenge the normative assumptions of ‘difference’ and ‘normal’. In the studied books, challenging the dominant sociopolitical discourses seems to further the understanding of ‘us’ in a more inclusive way which then might prevent exclusion of people who differ from the ‘norm’. The didactic quality of children’s books is manifest in anti-racist strategies with the aim of reducing racism by making it visible. The study shows that children’s literature offers possibilities for readers to question implicit assumptions about the self and other, and thus can support readers in becoming more culturally aware and sensitive.
Tutkimuksen metodologis-teoreettisen perustan muodostaa sosiaalinen konstruktivismi.

O ROMANCE ESTILHAÇADO: LA VIDA EN LAS VENTANAS, DE ANDRÉS NEUMAN E BERKELEY EM BELLAGIO, DE JOÃO GILBERTO NOLL / THE SHATTERED ROMANCE: LA VIDA EN LAS VENTANAS, BY ANDRÉS NEUMAN AND BERKELEY AT BELLAGIO, BY JOÂO GILBERTO NOLLMelo, Ivana Ferigolo 26 February 2013 (has links)
From the second half of the twentieth century, the West starts to record significant changes in the social, political, economic, ideological and cultural sphere. For many scholars/researchers, one of the central consequences of these changes is the consolidation of a globalized world, borders and national identities weakened or dissolved and lacking in grand narratives of utopian nature and homogenizing. Such globalized reality seems to resonate in the instance of cultural production and thus literary. One of the signs of this impact tends to be the appearance of certain narratives, to distance themselves from the most expressive modalities expressed by romance throughout modernity, requesting literary criticism defining new parameters for analysis and interpretation. Two examples, among others, of reports that seem to show a large gap in relation to expressions of romance in modernity are La vida en las Ventanas, the Spanish-Argentine writer Andrés Neuman and Berkeley in Bellagio, the author João Gilberto Noll. Assuming that these narratives present ties to the social, existential and spiritual atmosphere that is drawn in the West, from the second half of the last century, this work seeks to clarify, from the analysis of both narratives, that the understanding of the cultural and aesthetic sense of these reports depends on the definition of parameters differentiated analysis and interpretation of which were developed throughout modernity to the romance genre. In this sense, the work is structured from the review of relevant placements of literary criticism in Spain and Brazil today; recovery of the novel theories elaborated by authors such as Lukacs, Feher, Bakhtin, among others, and the review and discussion the thought of authors who try to explain the peculiarities of Western historical phase following the second world war, as Vattimo, Jameson, Anderson, Habermas, Lasch, etc.. It is concluded from the analysis of the works that the motives that drive the contemporary novelistic creation differ from that motivated formalization throughout modernity, the romance factor that leads to formal register modifications and requiring other analytical and interpretive devices.

Julius Wellhausen die denke van ’n ou-testamentikus (Afrikaans)Serfontein, Gideon Johannes 09 May 2012 (has links)
Julius Wellhausen is known as the father of the Classical form of the source hypothesis. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Wellhausen‘s life, his greatest works and his influences on the study of the Pentateuch, including observing the process that paved the way for him to become the bearer of this title. Lastly, whether his source hypothesis has any relevance with the study of the Pentateuch in this day and age will also be answered. In the first chapter the role of Old Testament, critics like Spinoza, Simon, Astruc, De Wette, Hupfeld, Reuss, Kuenen and Graf will be examined. They all played a part in establishing the source hypothesis to which Wellhausen gave its final form. The era of the Enlightenment got momentum in the beginning of the nineteenth century. This movement also played a major role in creating the environment in which a critical examination of the Bible and its sources could be done. Wellhausen was influenced by this new way of thinking and was helped by the findings of other Old Testament critics that preceded him. In chapter two, his student life and the role of his teacher Heinrich Ewald will be examined. One of Wellhausen‘s aims was to write a history of Israel. To execute this he required sources. In chapter three, the first chapter (Genesis) of his book, Die Composition des Hexateuchs will be examined to get an idea of the method he used in the recognition, grouping and dating of the sources. The sources he identified in Genesis were the Yahwist, Elohist, Jehovist and Q (book of the four covenants and later called the Priestly source). Wellhausen used these sources to construct a history of Israel. In Chapter four an examination of his Geschichte Israels up to the beginning of the Christian era will be done. His greatest work was most certainly, his Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels and in chapter five this masterpiece will be examined with special emphasis on the first part, namely Geschichte des Kultus. After Wellhausen has compared the different sources with each other, he came to certain conclusions. During the religion of Israel there was a development that can be traced from the earlier sources of the Yahwist(J), Elohist(E) to Deuteronomy(D) and finally to the Priestly Source(P). Early sources indicate that the worship of Israel was a spontaneous and free willing act. There were no rules regarding the place of worship, sacrifice, the sacred feasts and the clergy. In Deuteronomy this have now changed and laws were introduced regarding these aspects which the Israelites should adhere to. In the Priestly Source these laws are now assumed. From the outcome of these findings, it was clear for Wellhausen that the Priestly Source is the youngest of the sources. Therefore P should be dated in the exile or post-exilic period. Chapter six is a summary of Wellhausen‘s source hypothesis and how his source hypothesis assisted other scholars during their own research and findings. This study will close with a modern view on his source hypothesis and its relevance for today. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Old Testament Studies / unrestricted

Within the folds : how biomedical science is redefining traditional concepts of parenthood and parenting (Researching 'Within the folds' : critical commentary)Windridge, Lucy January 2015 (has links)
Within the Folds is a 70,000 word novel where prehistory and the near future meet together in a narrative examining the forces of evolution and duration. The work particularly focuses on the conceptual changes taking place in parenting models as biomedical science gives opportunities to reproductive paradigms which were previously impossible. Taking the premise that developments in human engineering are unstoppable, I explore the transgenic boundaries between 'natural evolution' and proactive human design, conceptually and thematically, as new models of gender roles within family life become inevitable.

This research takes a reading of the work of Alberto Pucheu, bringing to light the discussion on the poetic, critical and philosophical work, seen as a creative attitude. For the author, there is a lack of distinction between poetry and philosophy, and between poetry and criticism which are knowledges that are in a "dissolving boundaries", whose encounter takes place within the creation itself. In this hybrid approach, will seek to understand the way in which the merger occurs between these fields, focusing on the post-structuralist thought, as Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze and Giorgio Agamben, thinking, therefore, the relationship between man and city, image and concept, as well as the rapprochement between body and machine, real and language.

Presença francesa na crítica literária de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda (1920-1930) / French presence in the literary criticism of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda from 1920 to 1930Grace Alves da Paixão 30 March 2015 (has links)
This thesis is part of the scholarly literature that aims at analyzing the relationship between Sergio Buarque de Holandas oeuvre and foreign literatures. The goal is to present a discussion on the presence of French literature in his texts on literary criticism published between 1920 and 1930, a period in which the author established an intense dialogue with French cultural, literary and scholarly elements. The conclusion presents a portrait of the scholar as part of the radical Modernist group in its so-called heroic stage, immersed in the disquietude typical of his generation toward his own nationality and national culture but, at the same time, open to dialogue with the various literatures of the world, among which the French one plays an important role in his considerations.

“If I Could Only Win Your Love”: Lyrical Analysis of the Sacred and Secular Songs of the Louvin BrothersPorchak, Aynsley 01 May 2020 (has links)
In this thesis, I demonstrate how analysis through literary criticism can provide a commentary on Appalachian song. While literary analysis of both sacred and secular song lyrics is an approach that is largely overlooked in this region’s traditional music, it nonetheless provides insightful perspective on the art form itself. As I argue, one particular duo of Appalachian musicians, the Louvin Brothers, are uniquely suited to this inquiry. I propose that themes that are found in many of the Louvin Brothers’ songs, such as love, acceptance, and rejection, create a bridge between the historically documented theoretical gap between bluegrass and country music’s sacred and secular songs. I document how the Louvins successfully navigated these traditionally separate subgenres using these common subjects while offering a commentary on musical history, their own upbringing, and religion.

A literary-exegetical- and social-scientific analysis of the book of Jonah : an exposition of its ancient social valuesSchader, Jo-Mari January 2016 (has links)
By approaching the book of Jonah historical-critically, it has been indicated that the book of Jonah
likely dates to the Persian Period (more neutrally the post-exilic period), is a parody on the prophetic
traditions, and has a unified structure. It has been proposed by some that the book of Jonah was written
for the Yehudite elite, as a meant, by the author, for his audience to reflect critically on themselves.
When a literary-exegetical analysis was conducted of the book of Jonah, it was indicated that the
author of the book employed various literary and stylistic techniques that contributes to the unified
structure of the book of Jonah. It has also been indicated that all the prayers in the book is poetry, and
serves to pause the narration, and are employed to emphasise their content. The author also inverts the
typical Ancient Near Eastern values in his characterisation of the role players to thwart the reader's
typical expectations of each. The application of social-scientific criticism then supports the theory that
the book of Jonah is indeed a parody, and that its main theme in the book of Jonah relates to the
compassion and mercy of Yahweh/God which outweighs his desire to destroy the inhabitants of
Nineveh and their animals, and appears to be conditional, as repentence is a requirement. / Thesis (DLitt)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Ancient Languages / DLitt / Unrestricted
