Chaucer the Love Poet: A Study in Historical Criticism

Treilhard, John 09 1900 (has links)
<p> This thesis is an historically based inquiry into the aesthetic function and moral significance of the themes of marriage, fornication, and adultery in Chaucer's poetry about sexual love. Its first aim is to construct a philosophic and historical framework within which to study Chaucer as a love poet and thereby to help dispel the common but fallacious idea that Chaucer's poetic compositions on the subject of love are archetypally and thematically similar to those of the romantic poets of the nineteenth-century. Chaucer's attitude toward love is interpreted as a composite product of the influences of Ovid, St. Augustine, and the Christian Church of the Middle Ages and is shown to be morally incompatible with the idea, popular in the romantic literature of another era, that the world is well lost for love. </p> <p> The first chapter of the thesis is mainly devoted to an investigation of the salient differences between Chaucer's conception of love, which is in essence abstract moral, and impersonal, and the romantic conception, which tends to be emotional, amoral, and highly subjective. This chapter describes the intellectual background of the distinctively medieval traditions of cosmological love, married love, and Ovidian love and attempts to interpret the influence of these traditions on the mind and art of Chaucer. </p> <p> After the first chapter, the focus of discussion becomes much narrower, and descriptive treatment of the history of ideas gives way to close analysis of specific cruxes in love poems like Troilus and Criseyde, the Knight's Tale, and the Parliament of Fowls. These cruxes, which include the problematic function of Chaucer's various apostrophes and invocations to Venus, and the complex moral relationship of Venus to Nature, are examined for their relevance to the question of how Chaucer actually views erotic passion in his great love poetry. The conclusion reached in the second chapter is that the various cruxes treated here can all be resolved by showing that Chaucer consistently subscribes to Augustinian doctrines of nature, grace, and sexual morality. </p> <p> The third and last chapter of the thesis departs from the conceptual approach to love taken in the previous two in that it adopts a more formalistic and aesthetically orientated mode of criticism. However, this chapter, like the preceding one, concentrates on the elucidation of cruxes and supports its generalizations about Chaucer's artistry through close analysis and attention to poetic detail. Chapter 3 deals solely with Troilus and Criseyde, analyzing the concept of "love as an art" to which the poem repeatedly alludes; interpreting dynamics of response in the poem's audience; and discussing the metaphoric association of verbal prevarication with amorous enslavement in the behaviour of Troilus, Criseyde, and Pandarus. The general conclusion of this chapter, as of the others, is that Chaucer was unquestionably a man of his time -- an orthodox member of the Church and a firm follower of the teachings of St. Augustine in matters of art as in ethics. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Doubling:

Mutlu Tunca, Gulru 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Italian architectural historian and critic, Manfredo Tafuri, with his seminal book Theories and History of Architecture, issued in 1968, started a new era in the architectural discourse. With his eminent theorization of &ldquo / architecture as the critique of ideology,&rdquo / Tafuri had shifted the critique of architecture to a political and Marxist level and this revolutionary understanding had absolute impacts on the institutionalization of the American critical discourse after 1968. This study is a historical criticism of the said intellectual interaction that examines the related theoretical transformations in discourse through specific publications, exhibitions, and symposiums. The 1972 MoMA exhibition, entitled Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (INDL) was a singular &ldquo / case&rdquo / in this examination since the first encounter of American intellectuals with the English translation of Tafuri&rsquo / s text, introducing a historical language, was through its catalog. Assigning the exhibition as a &ldquo / moment of crisis&rdquo / that had critical determining value for the comprehension of the entire sequence, this study attempts to reveal its significance, by analyzing the INDL catalog with a Tafurian methodology. In its entirety, the present study is a historical criticism of a sequence, which, however, does not refer to a linear flow of time. It is the &ldquo / project of crises&rdquo / in that particular sequence, a &ldquo / historical project&rdquo / in Tafurian sense. The project begins with the &ldquo / doubling&rdquo / of the INDL catalog. It recomposes the process into autonomous narratives, and then establishes an analytical relationship between those and Italophile inclinations in related texts, published in the periodical Oppositions between 1974 and 1984.

A literary-exegetical- and social-scientific analysis of the book of Jonah : an exposition of its ancient social values

Schader, Jo-Mari January 2016 (has links)
By approaching the book of Jonah historical-critically, it has been indicated that the book of Jonah likely dates to the Persian Period (more neutrally the post-exilic period), is a parody on the prophetic traditions, and has a unified structure. It has been proposed by some that the book of Jonah was written for the Yehudite elite, as a meant, by the author, for his audience to reflect critically on themselves. When a literary-exegetical analysis was conducted of the book of Jonah, it was indicated that the author of the book employed various literary and stylistic techniques that contributes to the unified structure of the book of Jonah. It has also been indicated that all the prayers in the book is poetry, and serves to pause the narration, and are employed to emphasise their content. The author also inverts the typical Ancient Near Eastern values in his characterisation of the role players to thwart the reader's typical expectations of each. The application of social-scientific criticism then supports the theory that the book of Jonah is indeed a parody, and that its main theme in the book of Jonah relates to the compassion and mercy of Yahweh/God which outweighs his desire to destroy the inhabitants of Nineveh and their animals, and appears to be conditional, as repentence is a requirement. / Thesis (DLitt)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Ancient Languages / DLitt / Unrestricted

Historical Linguistic Analysis of Traditional English Christmas Carols.

Baker, Tami Lynn 01 May 2001 (has links) (PDF)
Through the process of historical linguistics it is possible to determine approximate dates of authorship and meaning that establish the conventions of a particular genre. To accomplish such a study, elements of phonology, morphology, and syntax are compared and the results create a field of descriptors representative of a style of writing of a period. By using the method on eight well-known Christmas carols, four were determined to have been written prior to the dates previously speculated, possibly originating in the Middle Ages. The remaining four were written based on the conventions set by the earlier medieval carols.

From Dogs to Kings : Master Narratives and Plurality of Voices in Treasure Island and Black Sails / Från hundar till kungar : `master narratives’ och en mångfald av röster i Treasure Island och Black Sails

Razman, Diana Cristina January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to show how both Treasure Island and Black Sails depict master narratives that are mainly influenced by imperialist ideology. The essay analyzes elements present in both the novel and the television series that reflect imperialist practices such as “othering,” propaganda, and exploitation. The aim of this essay is also to underline the plurality of voices created by various narratives of marginalized people present in the two sources. By analyzing the perspective and social organization of minority groups such as children, gay men, and people with disabilities, this essay demonstrates how the narratives of marginalized people can be both subversive and complementary to the master narrative.

That study sought to assess the influence of so-called childhood studies dissertations developed in the Graduate Program in Environmental Education - PPGEA / FURG . The aim was to understand how the concepts and principles of such a study , often found in academic literature about childhood , as well as courses in pedagogy and school practices have been articulated by researchers at PPGEA in their research . To fundamentarmos research , we use the referential anchored in a perspective of historical and dialectical materialism , as the authors of the Historical- Critical Pedagogy , the Historic-Cultural Theory , Critical Environmental Education beyond . One of the data pointed to by the study is that the research developed in the program carry direct influences of constructivist theories and postmodern studies , which are present in the conception of the child and childhood , the concepts used during searches in the settings as they should be the spaces of childhood education, advocacy found on the posture of the adult in relational processes , in that the researchers understand how the role of education and teacher . You could say that research that use the concepts of childhood studies , take into account the context in which children are inserted , worrying to describe it , point , sometimes the needs and demands of this place but at the same time, greater emphasis is placed on the relationships that occur in these environments, especially the re-significations that children can make from it would be for scholars , the " adult culture " . Given this, advocated the need for an articulated conceptions of pedagogy historical-critical work, who understands the importance of a caring school and equip oportunizar children access to socially produced knowledge , apart from alienating practices and fetishized.

Outsiders to Whom? Reimagining the Creation of Young Adult Literature in the United States

Eveleth, Kyle W. 01 January 2019 (has links)
The study of young adult literature has become widespread within Children’s and Young Adult Literature specifically and literary studies as a whole. However, the term “young adult” which defines and focalizes both the literature itself and the ostensible readers for whom it is produced remains a poorly-examined area. The present study examines the creation of one branch of what we now call “young adult literature” from its roots in the United States in the early twentieth century to its emergence as a dominant literary form in the mid-to-late 1960s. In doing so, it seeks to reconcile emerging professional, psychological, sociological, pedagogical, cultural, and ideological discourses concerning adolescence and young adulthood with works of fiction prepared specifically for their consumption. It also seeks to position the changing role of adolescent subjects into the larger framework of American Studies by examining how these texts reflected, tested, and reinforced dominant paradigms of thought surrounding how adolescents would become actualized American subjects. At the same time, it broaches concerns within these dominant paradigms that have been overlooked in constructing historical approaches to the development of young adult literature, and it suggests a few methodologies by which to recover these undiscussed threads.
