Digital signal processing extra-tropical cyclones warning system using WiMAX

Al-Breiki, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Naser January 2013 (has links)
This research project proposed a unique solution to make use of these base stations to keep all subscribers alerted with warning of possible disaster should that be required. As the current, network does not provide a provision for such a noble approach, a new network model has been developed and simulated to interface a sensor (weather station, WeS), with WiMAX weather station. The weather station is based on DSP processor to receive a digitised sensor values, process these values, analyse them and if they fall within the alert zones, packet them according to WiMAX protocol and send them to subscribers. The developed standard bypasses any commercial network to offer free transmission to subscribers. This setup is also able to extract information on weather condition or react on uncertainty, i.e. disaster scenarios. Natural disasters, such as torrent, tornado/ hurricane, volcano eruption, earthquake, Tsunamis or landslide are increasing. Unfortunately they bring with them human tragedies, environment catastrophes, villages, cities and counties are subject to endless devastation during and after the destructive forces. Water, electricity and gas supply are most disrupted and difficult to restore in short time. However, communication is another item that can be affected adversely but WLAN with specific considerations, should be excluded from the effect. This project presents a solution, albeit minor relative to the maximum effect of the disaster, but will keep the telecommunication/communication in operation. Our novel technique, a “Clone Wireless Wide Area Network (CloneWAN)” is a clone wireless network to the wired Network. In the event of natural calamities, it gives continuity of network operation. It is based on WiMAX. The realization of CloneWAN has been formed and simulated to set the national network of the UAE at its correct form. CloneWAN model has been simulated with Opnet platform. All results revealed that the model is complete. The interface to Alerting System is discussed. Results show that the dynamic behavior of the parameters delay and Throughput of CloneWAN model is stable over various and different load scenarios. WiMAX is a de-facto standard in the current and future network requirement standards. Its main component is the Base Station which is normally stationed in the air, high enough to couple signals from other base stations. It is purpose is merely focused on networking signals for commercial purposes. The suggested hardware interface for the Weather Station is based on DSP SHARC processor. The model has been written in C and simulated under Opnet package. A number of scenarios have been set to represent different disasters worldwide. All results are listed and discussed later in the thesis.

A Real-Time Telemetry Data Processing System with Open System Architecture

Jun, Zhang, MeiPing, Feng, Yanbo, Zhu, Bin, He, Qishan, Zhang 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / In face of the characteristics of multiple data streams, high bit rate, variable data formats, complicated frame structure and changeable application environment, the programmable PCM telemetry system needs a new data processing system with advanced telemetry system architecture. This paper fully considers the characteristics of real-time telemetry data processing, analyzes the design of open system architecture for real-time telemetry data processing system(TDPS), presents an open system architecture scheme and design of real-time TDPS, gives the structure model of distributed network system, and develops the interface between network database and telemetry database, as well as telemetry processing software with man-machine interface. Finally, a practical and multi-functional real-time TDPS with open system architecture has been built, which based on UNIX operating system, supporting TCP/IP protocol and using Oracle relational database management system. This scheme and design have already proved to be efficient for real-time processing, high speed, mass storage and multi-user operation.

Vliv florální morfologie na percepci květů člověkem / The influence of floral morphology on the perception of the flowers by man

Hůla, Martin January 2015 (has links)
Human preference of flowers is a largely unexplored area of research. Although some authors mentioned this topic, it was usually a very brief comment. They typically stated that flowers are most likely preferred because of their coloration and symmetry. But flowers have many forms and colors and it is obvious that some of them are preferred more than others. The aim of this paper was to explore which morphological characteristics of flowers are important for human preference. We discuss how individual differences between people affected their rating of flower attractivity. The effect of flower color, symmetry, complexity, angularity and prototypicality on human preference was experimentally verified. It is described how the flower preference can be influenced by the sex, age, level of expertise and other characteristics of the raters. The results can provide a valuable source of information for experts in horticultural therapy, garden and interior designers, plant breeders, gardeners and other persons interested in the aesthetic value of flowers. There is a lack of relevant sources on this topic not only in the Czech Republic, but also worldwide.

The survivors' affair

Euteneuer, Jacob January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of English / Daniel A. Hoyt / In this project, the opening chapters of a novel, a fifty-foot man falls to the ground in Athens, Ohio. He is pronounced dead at the scene. What begins as a bizarre happening in a small college town soon spirals into an event with global repercussions. The federal government puts together a team of four scientists: Peter, a biologist; Jonathon, an archaeologist; Alexa, a forensic scientist; and Carly, a geneticist. As politicians, the media, and religious figures latch on to the giant man, the scientists try to determine if the body is real. Meanwhile, a religious cult develops in Athens. The cult believes the body is the Judeo-Christian God because it resembles images of God in popular and classic works of art. The giant man came from up in the clouds, has a white, billowing beard, and is old. Cult members tie bandanas around their eyes because they believe humans are not meant to look upon the body of God. The novel is told from a third-person omniscient point of view and shows the far-reaching consequences of such a fantastic event in our contemporary world. The novel delves into the mind of the Pope, a mortician, a lawyer, clergymen, students at Ohio University, the mayor of Athens, and a four-year-old boy, among many others. These characters try to come to terms with what it means to have the unreal and the impossible happen in their ordinary lives.

Mate value and partner-directed insults

Unknown Date (has links)
To prevent a partner's infidelity and relationship defection, men perform mate retention behaviors. Some of these mate retention behaviors are high-risk because they decrease the likelihood of infidelity while potentially increasing the likelihood of relationship defection. Although previous research has indicated that mate value may be related to mate retention generally, research has not addressed these cost-inflicting mate retention behaviors specifically. The current research examines the relationship between men's and women's mate values and men's use of partner-directed insults - a specific type of cost-inflicting mate retention behavior. The results from a sample of 158 women indicate that although men's and women's mate values predict men's partner-directed insults, men's mate value is a better predictor than is women's mate value. Women who report that their partners have lower mate value also report that their partners insult them more frequently than women who report that their partners have higher mate value.

Larsson, Kajsa January 2019 (has links)

Lyric Poetry, Conservative Poetics, and the Rise of Fascism

Lisiecki, Chet 17 October 2014 (has links)
As fascist movements took hold across Europe in the 1920s and 1930s, there emerged a body of lyric poetry concerned with revolution, authority, heroism, sacrifice, community, heritage, and national identity. While the Nazi rise to power saw the deception, persecution, and brutalization of conservatives both in the Reichstag and in the streets, these themes resonated with fascists and conservatives alike, particularly in Germany. Whether they welcomed the new regime out of fear or opportunism, many conservative beneficiaries of National Socialism shared, and celebrated in poetry, the same ideological principles as the fascists. Such thematic continuities have made it seem as though certain conservative writers, including T. S. Eliot, Stefan George, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, were proto-fascist, their work cohering around criteria consonant with fascist ideology. My dissertation, however, emphasizes the limits of such cohesion, arguing that fascist poetry rejects, whereas conservative poetry affirms, the possibility of indeterminacy and inadequacy. While the fascist poem blindly believes it can effect material political change, the conservative poem affirms the failure of its thematic content to correspond entirely to material political reality. It displays neither pure political commitment nor aesthetic autonomy, suspending these categories in an unresolved tension. Paul de Man's work on allegory hinges on identifying a reading practice that addresses this space between political commitment and aesthetic autonomy. His tendency to forget the immanence of history, however, is problematic in the context of fascism. Considering rhetorical formalism alongside dialectical materialism, in particular Adorno's essay "Lyric Poetry and Society," allows for a more rounded and ethical methodological approach. The poetic dramatization of the very indeterminacy that historically constituted conservative politics in late-Weimar Germany both distinguishes the conservative from the fascist poem while also accounting for its complicity. Fascism necessitated widespread and wild enthusiasm, but it also succeeded through the (unintentional) proliferation of political indifference as registered, for example, by the popularity of entertainment literature. While the work of certain conservative high modernists reflected critically on its own failures, such indeterminacy nonetheless resembles the failure to politically commit oneself against institutionalized violence and systematic oppression.

Homens jovens e a internação psiquiátrica: relações de cuidado e família / Young men and the psychiatric hospitalization: care relationships and family.

Moura, Deborah Maria Amed Ali de 26 August 2011 (has links)
The current public policies of mental health in Brazil set the attendance of the person with mental disorder preferably in the extra hospital services. In conformity with that, they also set the progressive extinction of the asylum care model. Recent researches point out this context and its protagonists: the government, the society, the family members, and the person with mental disorder. The mental disorder episode causes a significant impact in people\'s lives. They suffer from the symptoms and also because they get unable to work and have leisure activities, from discrimination, having difficulties to assume life responsibilities and fearing being heavy to others. Men can suffer from this situation in a different way women can, once they have a different social and moral charge. The male dimension is related to work, virility, family financial support and protective attitude towards its family members. The young men psychiatric hospitalization situation interferes in the men\'s lives plans, in a moment they are in the middle of projects such as studies, career, constitution of their own families. The family caregivers (typically closer relatives) are also affected in their lives projects. Taking care of a person with mental disorder can bring satisfaction but also an extra load of activities for life. This situation leads to a need of reorganization towards the sick person. From this perspective the main objective of this research is to know the life situation and the family care involving young men in psychiatric hospitalization, considering the moment before, the hospitalization moment, and after psychiatric hospitalization through the informal family caregiver and the young men with mental disorder discourse, in what refers to the comprehension of the mental disorder, the organization of the family routine, the relationship among the family members, and the family caregiver\'s and young men\'s conceptions about the mental disorder. In the following step three cases studies were located from a previous contact with a psychiatric hospital in town, according to the following criteria: a) for the young man: the first hospitalizations in the psychiatric hospital; age under 40 years old; the main diagnosis in mental and behavior disorder; for the family caregiver: lived with the patients before and after the hospitalization, being in condition to answer the interviews and relate their life situations. There were interviews, informal talks, writings in the field diary, and documents consulting in this study. The qualitative analysis allowed the main categories\' formation that pointed out to: a coexistence of different conceptions of mental disorder; the treatment made mainly by medication; the family caregiver\'s burden; the presence of physical and emotional symptoms due to emotional burden; spirituality and social support net as protection factors for burden; the conflicted familiar relationship relevance driving to psychiatric hospitalization; the attendance of the young men with mental disorder in the public health services mainly by medicine; the necessity to articulate the public health services, and also the social support net as a way to attend them in these situations that asks for long term treatment.
