Evaluation and analysis of total flexibility in the production using Monte Carlo simulationTaudes, Alfred, Natter, Martin, Schauerhuber, Markus January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
Nearly unpredictable turbulence on an overall economic level, radical changes in the legal framework and a shift in the moral concepts prevailing in the general public emphasize the importance of increased corporate flexibility. Usually, most flexibility measurements suffer from the defect that they are not pecuniary, that interactions between different flexibility dimensions are not considered and that they lack the required relatedness to the respective context. These problems contribute to a large extent to the fact that, when making investment decisions, the value of flexibility is considered but intuitively or insufficiently. Frequently, the results are irrational myopic pseudo decisions. The present work can be regarded as an attempt to design a pecuniary and context-related flexibility measure of three single flexibility dimensions in an extremely simplified framework and under restrictive assumptions. The primary method used is Monte Carlo Simulation. The present study shows that the value of flexibility can be substantive and that taking into account the interactions of various single flexibilities when strategic investments are made can be of great importance. In this paper, we work out the connection between "environmental volatility" and the "value of flexibility". Our work shows a numerically strong positive relation between these two properties. Human system modelling in support of manufacturing enterprise design and changeKhalil, Siti Nurhaida January 2012 (has links)
Organisations comprise human and technical systems that typically perform a variety of business, engineering and production roles. Human systems comprise individuals, people groups and teams that work systematically to conceive, implement, develop and manage the purposes of any enterprise in response to customer requirements. Recently attention has been paid to modelling aspects of people working within production systems, with a view to improving: production performance, effective resource allocation and optimum resource management. In the research reported, graphical and computer executable models of people have been conceived and used in support of human systems engineering. The approach taken has been to systematically decompose and represent processes so that elemental production and management activities can be modelled as explicit descriptions of roles that human systems can occupy as role holders. First of all, a preliminary modelling method (MM1) was proposed for modelling human systems in support of engineering enterprise; then MM1 was implemented and tested in a case study company 1. Based on findings of this exploratory research study an improved modelling method (MM2) was conceived and instrumented. Here characterising customer related product dynamic impacts extended MM1 modelling concepts and methods and related work system changes. MM2 was then tested in case study company 2 to observe dynamic behaviours of selected system models derived from actual company knowledge and data. Case study 2 findings enabled MM2 to be further improved leading to MM3. MM3 improvements stem from the incorporation of so-called DPU (Dynamic Producer Unit) concepts, related to the modelling of human and technical resource system components . Case study 4 models a human system for targeted users i.e. production managers etc to facilitate analysis of human configuration and also cost modelling. Modelling approaches MM2, MM3 and also Case Study 4 add to knowledge about ways of facilitating quantitative analysis and comparison between different human system configurations. These new modelling methods allow resource system behaviours to be matched to specific, explicitly defined, process-oriented requirements drawn from manufacturing workplaces currently operating in general engineering, commercial furniture and white goods industry sectors.

Order Driven Flexible Shop ManagementBulut, Aykut 01 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The difficulties in responding to variation in product order mixes and load levels effectively in make to order are known. Most of the existing approaches consider releasing jobs to the shop (input control), changing capacity levels (output control) in a controlled way, order acceptance with different definitions of work load and due date assignment. Controlling the processes, routing options and the order accepting capacity with various tool combinations that will decrease tool loading are not considered
properly.
However the manufacturing flexibility provided by the computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines, provides both part variety and due date achievement given a reasonable extra capacity. Positive effects of flexibility on the due date achievement of the make to order is shown with a variety of experimental and field studies leaving little doubt. However taking flexibility only as a strategic issue and not considering it as a means of planning and management in either the short term or medium term decisions have been commonplace practice.
In this study, benefits of providing three kinds of flexibility, considering order pool and acceptance probability of the new arrivals in a periodic setting, is the focal issue. If the required flexible environment is provided, the necessity to make a detailed job loading, route planning and scheduling will be reduced to a low level and a high shop congestion and due date achievement will be realized simultaneously. A typical realistic shop with a scaled part mix is assumed in the flexibility management modeling and simulation experiments are conducted applying periodical flexibility planning approach. These experiments briefly support the ideas that worth of anticipation is more than plain expectations and flexibility improves robustness.

This thesis focuses on flexibility issues in supply chain. These issues are becoming more and more important for firms because of the increasingly changing business environment and customer behaviors. Although some of these issues have been tackled in academic research in recent years, but studies have mainly concentrated in conceptual levels and there is little consensus even on the definition of flexibility. This thesis aims at defining a new framework for the supply chain flexibility, proposing quantitative measures of the flexibility and optimizing the use of flexibility, especially in an integrated production and transportation planning context. The new framework of supply chain flexibility is based on classification of different flexibility aspects in a supply chain into three main categories - manufacturing flexibility, logistic chain flexibility and system flexibility. These flexibility types are further distinguished into major flexibility dimension and other flexibility dimension. In order to measure supply chain flexibility from a quantitative point of view, Mechanical Analogy method is particularly discussed. A procedure is established to enlarge and carry out this method in supply chain, provided with a case study to evaluate the flexibility of Louis Vuitton stores. One of the most important issues is to optimally make use of the available flexibility. We investigate an Integrated Production and Transportation Planning problem with given flexibility tolerances, where the production and transportation activities are intimately linked to each other and must be scheduled in a synchronized way. Particularly, heterogeneous vehicles are taken into account. Two mixed integer linear programming models are constructed.Three algorithms are developed and compared with linear relaxation bounds for large sized real life instances and with optimal solutions for small sized instances. These comparisons show the effectiveness of our heuristics in solving real life problems

[en] OPERATIONALIZATION OF MANUFACTURING FLEXIBILITY: ANALYZING THE BUYER-SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIP INFLUENCE / [pt] OPERACIONALIZAÇÃO DA FLEXIBILIDADE DE MANUFATURA: ANÁLISE DAS INFLUÊNCIAS DO RELACIONAMENTO PRODUTOR-FORNECEDORROGERIO ODIVAN BRITO SERRAO 10 February 2006 (has links)
[pt] O tema principal desta tese é a operacionalização da
flexibilidade de manufatura, a partir de duas abordagens:
teórica e empírica. A abordagem teórica visa a discussão
No
fornecedor.
manufatura apresentados pelas empresas estudadas. / [en] The purpose of this dissertation is to study the
operationalization of manufacturing flexibility, focusing
on aspects of relationships in the supply chain and their
impact on manufacturing flexibility. The research involves
four manufacturing companies for studying the influence of
four aspects of buyer-supplier relationship -
trust/commitment, information sharing, supplier
development and joint product development - on three
external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility - mix,
new products and volume. The study also observes the
generalized effects of these relationships on
manufacturing performance and on the levels of
manufacturing flexibility shown by the companies studied.
The buyer-supplier relationships are deeply analyzed and
their general characteristics and effects on the
operationalization of manufacturing flexibility are
presented. In addition, the analysis of scope and
achievability factors indicated the presence of little
explored flexible resources in the companies studied.
Finding ways for operationalizing flexibility must be seen
as a priority question to obtain competitive advantage in
manufacturing systems. This work shows how the
relationships between the buyer and supplier can influence
several external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility
and, consequently, manufacturing performance.

Processo de trabalho, divisão sexual do trabalho e práticas sociais das operárias na indústria eletroeletrônica no contexto da flexibilidade produtiva / Labour process, sexual division of labour and social practises of female industrial workers in eletricial & eletronic industry on manufacturing flexibility contextThaís de Souza Lapa 19 December 2014 (has links)
The manufacturing flexibility processes together with technological and organizational changes in companies, which have occurred in Brazil under the aegis of the capitalist productive restructuring since 1980 and with special emphasis in 1990, are observed in this study in light of the sexual division of labour issues, taking the electrical & electronic field to be analysed, which has the highest proportion of women in the metallurgical industry. The research is built on the gender-awareness issues as knowledge object in the analysis of the working class, seeking to contribute to the sociology of work with a gendered empirical and theoretical reflection on work, thus justifying the need to recognize the gendered composition of the working class and claiming the inseparability of gender and class dimensions. Based on the sectorial study focused on two transnational electrical & electronic industries of the telecommunication and computer field, whose plots analysed are located in cities in the countryside of São Paulo State, characteristics of labour process were identified and analysed in various productive sectors of the companies. These companies have manufactured in Brazil - one since the 90s and the other since 2000 telephones, cellphones, tablets, monitors, laptops, among other pieces of equipment, and employed mostly women. Focused on the labour process, the research sought to investigate contemporary forms of work organization (flexible or rigid) in the electrical & electronic industry and their resultant working conditions, especially towards the female workers. Such conditions exist in an environment with internal and external flexibility of the productive process. However, these conditions would maintain strict management mechanisms such as predetermined tasks, strict time management, breaks and cadence and pressure to reach targets, methods which prevail in the Taylorized occupations which are often female occupations as well. Thus, the criteria and the forms presented to the sexual division within the labor process were analysed in various sectors of both factories, covering historical continuities and changes in this division, as well as specificities over the control and the qualification of female labour. Elements of subjectivity and the social significance of labour for the female workers were investigated, as well as the social practises that derive from their condition of gendered subjects, generated in social relations of sex/gender and class, in and out of the factory. Through semi-structured interviews with both female and male workers and trade union leaders, representatives of the workers from both companies, the study sought to understand to which extent the forms of productive organization and the sexual division of labour identified in the electrical & electronic industry influence on the reproduction of the social relations of class and gender and / or on the possibility of their transformation.
