[pt] ESTUDO DA DEPOSIÇÃO TERMOFORÉTICA DE PARTÍCULAS NA FABRICAÇÃO DE FIBRAS ÓTICAS / [en] STUDY OF PARTICLE DEPOSITION BY THERMOPHORESIS IN OPTICAL FIBER FABRICATION

MONICA FEIJO NACCACHE 14 September 2012 (has links)
[en] The present work sets forth a numeriacal simulation of the processo f particle deposition in a laminar pipe flow subjected to external heating. The simulation is aimed at modeling the MCVD (Modified Chemical vapor Deposition) process utilized in the frabication or performs for optical fiver production. In this process, the particles convected with the carrier gas are deposited on the inner wall of the pipe due to thermophoretic forces. The deposition efficiency is obtained by numerically solving the differential equations governing conservation of mass, momentum, energy, and chemical species (particle concentration). The latter equation was solved utilizing a velocity field calculated by adding the carrier gas velocity to the thermophoretic velocity, obtained from the local temperature gradients. In order to assess the effects of axial thermophoretic velocities on particle deposition, the governing equations were considered in their elliptic form. The results presented revealed that the inlet which produce significant axial thermophoretic velocities and markedly influence the particle deposition efficiency.

[en] DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A CHOLESTERIC LIQUID CRYSTAL LASER SYSTEM COUPLED TO AN OPTICAL FIBER / [pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO E CARACTERIZAÇÃO DE UM SISTEMA LASER DE CRISTAL LÍQUIDO COLESTÉRICO ACOPLADO À FIBRA ÓPTICA

MICHELE FIGUEIREDO MOREIRA 10 August 2004 (has links)
[en] In this work, we have studied the viability of developing a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) laser system coupled into an optical fiber aiming its application as temperature sensor. Sensors made of CLC laser coupled to optical fibers are a very attractive proposition due to the enormous advantages of the optical fibers and the response of the liquid crystal to various external stimuli. The laser emission occurs at the low energy edge of the reflection band, and the corresponding wavelength is determined by the pitch and the extraordinary refractive index. These parameters can be altered by a change in the external temperature, leading to variations in the wavelength of the CLC laser emission, which can be used to monitor the external temperature. We obtained a stable laser emission in a CLC laser system coupled into an optical fiber when pumped by the second harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser. A technique to anchor the liquid crystal at the optical fibers ends was developed. The temperature dependence of the laser emission was investigated in two situations, placing the CLC laser between optical fibers and into the glass cells. Several liquid crystals were studied in order to optimize the laser response with temperature. Discrete variations in the temperature dependence of the laser emission wavelength were observed when the glass cell system was used. We associated this behavior to a temperature dependence of the surface anchoring of the liquid crystal molecules in the glass surface.

[en] DEVELOPMENT OF A STRAIN MEASUREMENT SYSTEM USING BRAGG GRATINGS IN OPTICAL FIBERS / [pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE UM SISTEMA DE MEDIÇÃO DE DEFORMAÇÃO UTILIZANDO REDES DE BRAGG EM FIBRAS OPTICAS

RICARDO LEIDERMAN 15 June 2016 (has links)
[en] The goal of the present work has been to develop a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor system. Experiments with an optical spectrum analyzer have confirmed that there is a linear relationship between the strain in the gratting and the shift of the central wave length reflected by the sensor. Based on this measurement principle, a simple and inexpensive optical circuit for demodulation of the sensor s reflected signal has been developed. Two photodetectors are employed in order to reduce the influence of power fluctuations of the optical source as well as of other losses. The measurement system has been calibrated both numerically and experimentally with satisfactory agreement. Suggestions are made in order to improve the calibration techniques, and a method for decoupling the temperature effects from the strain measurement is proposed.

[en] BIOSENSOR AND ELECTROOPTICAL DEVICE WITH SPECIAL FIBER OPTICS / [pt] BIOSSENSOR E DISPOSITIVO ELETRO-ÓPTICO EM FIBRAS ÓPTICAS ESPECIAIS

ALEXANDRE DE RESENDE CAMARA 05 April 2017 (has links)
[en] The present work investigates the use of fiber optics in biosensing and the creation of a second order nonlinearity to be use in the development of sensor devices. The goal of the proposed biosensor is to diagnose one of the diseases with highest incidence in tropical countries: Dengue. Dengue is a dangerous disease that every year affects more and more people, despite the efforts made to deal with the transmitter, the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Furthermore, since Dengue symptoms resemble flu symptoms, wrong diagnoses are frequently made. As a consequence, wrong medicines may be prescribed, and that may lead the patient to death. Another problem in diagnosing Dengue is the long time is necessary for the laboratorial exams to give a result. In an attempt to offer a solution that could minimize these problems, an LSPR-based fiber optic sensor was adapted for antigen NS1 detection. This sensor is potentially able to perform a Dengue s virus diagnosis in a short period of time in an infected patient s blood. It uses gold nanoparticles that are functionalized with Dengue s antibodies. The antibody, anti-NS1, was immobilized in gold nanoparticles deposited at the endface of a multimode optical fiber. The LSPR sensor is able to detect different concentrations of the antigen NS1 with a limit of quantification equal to 0.074 microgram per milliliter, and may be used in the acute phase of the infection. Another part of the present work investigates the possibility of performing structural modifications in the optical fiber to change the optical properties of silica. Through the electro-thermal poling technique it is possible to record electric fields as high as 108 volts per meter in the core of the fiber, making possible the use of these modified fibers as phase and amplitude modulators, optical keys, pulse selectors, voltmeters, etc. This work also shows a very detailed study of electro-thermal poling in optical fiber through simulations, using the software Comsol Multiphysics, considering various parameters that are involved in the process in order to obtain high second order nonlinearity. Furthermore, experiments on eletro-optical poling were performed to investigate the mechanism involved in this poling process, in order to understand the role of the carriers present in the material in the generation of the second order nonlinearity.

[en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE PROCESS OF DIFFUSION IN SHALES USING OPTIC FIBER / [pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DO PROCESSO DE DIFUSÃO EM FOLHELHOS USANDO FIBRA ÓPTICA

LUIS DE ALMEIDA CARLOS CAETANO 19 December 2001 (has links)
[en] Shale-drilling fluid interaction problems are generally associated with the exchange of ions between shale pore fluid and the drilling mud, being this change caused by the chemical gradient that holds between both. These problems are treated in general by using chemical products, so that the hydration and the expansion of the shales can be inhibited (Bol, 1986). Among these products, we found saline solutions (Steiger, 1976),which attempt to reduce the ionic migration by means of chemical balance between rocks and fluids. The objective of this work is to develop a methodology that allows measuring the variation of salt concentration, by using optic fiber sensors, in order to allow concentrations to be assessed without the withdrawal of the pressures applied into the sample, so that the variation of the concentration during the assays of diffusion and advection can be measured in real time, during the entire assay. The variation of the concentration with time is of fundamental importance for the attainment of the coefficients of ionic transport that occur during the assays with the shales and the sandstone. Assays in a sample of shale from Campos basin, as well as one sample of sandstone from Botucatu, have been carried out. Through the development of a methodology of assays specific for analyzing the interaction rock-fluid, it was possible to obtain resuls, which will allow to foresee instabilities generated in the wells during the digging process.

[pt] MONITORAMENTO DE RISERS FLEXÍVEIS COM SENSORES A FIBRA ÓPTICA / [en] MONITORING FLEXIBLE RISERS WITH OPTICAL FIBER SENSORS

20 October 2011 (has links)
[en] The interest in structural health monitoring of flexible risers has grown significantly in recent years. For ducts that are already reaching their design life, monitoring systems can provide early warnings of potential failures and also assist the operator in scheduling downtime. Different techniques are being tested by operators of flexible pipes such as automated visual inspection, vibration monitoring and acoustic emission, in addition to techniques based on electromagnetic methods. Some of these techniques are already being implemented in units of maritime exploration and production in Brazil and other countries. This contribution discusses the continuous monitoring and real-time using optical fiber sensors (FBGs) to detect the breaking of wires in the tensile armor of flexible risers. Two lines are followed, direct monitoring and indirect monitoring. The proposed indirect monitoring technique consists in the nonintrusive instrumentation of the riser’s polymeric outer sheath, which will provide strain signals that change due to the breaking of wires in the armor layer. For that, a transducer capable of detecting variations in the outer diameter, as well as stretching and twisting in the duct was developed. In the direct monitoring technique, all the wires in the external armor layer are individually instrumented with optical sensors that continuously monitor their strains, so that any disruptions of wires and unexpected behavior can be easily detected. Results of full scale laboratory tests showed that the probability of detection of indirect monitoring increases significantly when the system is used in conjunction with other types of indirect monitoring. The laboratory results for the direct monitoring showed high sensitivity and reliability of the system, which has already been installed in three oil rigs operated by Petrobras in the Campos Basin.
