Lamarche, Geneviève 18 February 2011 (has links)

DA S.01.09.17.pdf: 4544468 bytes, checksum: f881c3f2f09bfa7d322c33c695bfacc4 (MD5) / Handcraft is characterized as a practice in which individuals develop a modus operandi in their daily life that gives rise to events from and for their survival. These ways of making crafts makes possible the constitution of an organization to social subjects, which is involved in a network of relationships, enables them to transform their reality through collective actions, constituting a network of connections that permeates the handcraft produced by the participating social actors, in a continuous dynamic that encompasses its context. The study of these daily practices that permeates a work with local relevance allows us to understand specific dynamics of certain organizing, as in the case of the embroidered handicraft known as filé, originating in the state of Alagoas. In this sense, the objective of this dissertation is to understand the organizational process of the handcraft produced in the action nets resulting from the daily practices of the filé artisans of the neighborhood of Pontal da Barra, in the municipality of Maceió, state of Alagoas. The theoretical articulation that underlies this discussion is based on Michel de Certeau`s approach - about the daily life of the involved social actors - and the action nets approach, by Barbara Czarniawska - with the analysis of the innumerable connections existing in the researched context. In the empirical investigation, participant observation and shadowing were used as data collection techniques, as well as data collected by documents. The field work was carried out from June to October 2016, during which was realized a participant observation in two handcraft stores located in the neighborhood and the attendance of meetings in the Artisans' Association of Pontal da Barra was also performed. The shadowing took place for a period of six consecutive days with the president of the Association. After the data collection, the content analysis was used in the thematic modality, with categories defined a posteriori. The results showed that the organization of the handicraft studied is developed through the connection of several action nets, acting in all phases of the process, due to the fact that the craft activity receives influences from sensemaking from the initial phase, such as when characterizing the practice as therapy, presenting a sociomateriality that is marked by the heterogeneity of the community and, mainly, by the interactional interferences of the individuals. Therefore, organizing takes place through this sociomateriality inherent in a production process that enables practitioners to oppose the terms imposed by society, while helping them to form the identity of Filé embroidery artisans from Pontal da Barra / O artesanato se caracteriza como uma prática em que os indivíduos desenvolvem um modus operandi no seu cotidiano que origina eventos da e para a sua sobrevivência.

J20 DEFENDANTS: DISRUPTING STIGMA THROUGH IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

Brown, Lacey 01 December 2019 (has links)
This project presents findings from an analysis of qualitative interviews by the J20 Defendants, who were arrested, detained, and charged for rioting Donald J. Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2017. This project examines the identity management strategies and experiences of the J20 Defendants as individual members and as a larger collective, with specific focus on how their mental and emotional health impacts their perception of self. In addition, this project uses Fantasy Theme Analysis (FTA) to identify organizational norms and communicative practices within the J20 collective. Time and space impact collective interpretations, meanings, and values, which influence group consciousness (Bormann, 1985; Bormann, Cragan, & Shields, 1994). To understand the defendants’ symbolic world, I describe in Chapter 1 what happened on January 20, 2017. I explain, in chronological order, how the J20 Defendants were detained, their collective experience while in police custody, and the court proceedings.Attending Disrupt J20 was a collective experience, Weick (1979) explains that shared interpretations among members grant organizations the ability to exist beyond, or even without, physical or systematic structures. Chapter 2 defines the J20 Defendants as an organization through the Four Flows Models, a school of thought within Communicative Constitution of Organization (CCO). The J20 Defendants are anunusual organization due to forced membership; the prosecution labels their identities. However, they made sense of their forced membership by utilizing the four processes within the Four Flows Model: (1) membership negotiation, (2) self-structuring, (3) activity coordination, and (4) institutional positioning. This project also defines the J20 Defendants as a stigmatized organization through the theoretical concepts of event and core stigma, which are defined in Chapter 2. The defendants managed their stigma through various identity management strategies, which are highlighted in Chapter 4. Findings suggest the defendants did not value the viewpoint of mainstream society, which is why they attended the stigmatizing event Disrupt J20. However, they did value the opinions of other activists.Despite having similar beliefs and values, the defendants each navigated their stigma differently. Furthermore, the ways the defendants managed stigma did not align with strategies articulated in organizational communication literature. However, every interviewee made sense of their stigma based on their ability to maintain confidentially. This project notes three organizational obstacles: (1) managing the stress and anxiety of being a member, (2) communicating internally, (3) externally performing a clear collective identity. Through various forms of comradery, members were able to manage their stress and anxiety as J20 Defendants. Members were also viewed as autonomous agents in how active or inactive they wanted to be. Every defendant interviewed stepped away from the organizational core temporarily or permanently. Overall, I hope this project illuminates new information about stigmatized organizations that seek cultural and political change.

Rhetoric as Praxis in Leading and Organizing A Public Administration: A Journey in Democratic Governance

Bennett, Tracey J. 26 March 1998 (has links)
Currently, rhetoric is considered a negative term. This dissertation uses rhetoric as a normative term serving simultaneously as both the central story line and storyteller. Rhetoric is both the object of study and the lens through which to study. A field study was conducted with the Roanoke County administration. The rhetorical patterns of administrative leaders were observed and documented in their day-to-day activities. Rhetoric is the conceptual glue both highlighting and pulling together different layers of understanding. At the level of theory development and application, this includes building conceptual linkages between leading and organizing. In practice, public administrators know that leading and organizing occur as an integrated whole. Methodologically, a new technique to study the rhetoric of leading and organizing is introduced within the Roanoke County field study. At a normative level, the linkages discovered in the rhetorical discourse of leading and organizing reveal a greater understanding of democratic governance. The field study provides insights into leading and organizing that are also constitutive of a normative position regarding democratic governance. / Ph. D.

“Globalization from below”? Uncovering the Nuances in Grassroots/Transnational Mobilization

Hettiarachchi, Cindy 07 February 2014 (has links)
This thesis offers a micro-level analysis of labour and women’s organizing in the context of globalization through the case study of the Comité Fronterizo de Obrer@s (CFO) from 1978 to 2009. We will see how one organization’s journey can give us insights into the complexities of local organizing and transnational networking in the context of globalization. This case study can be seen as a lens through which we can examine the changing context of labour and women’s organizing in the distinct maquiladora environment. My work positions itself in the “globalization from above” and “globalization from below” debate, specifically around the question of transnational social movements that form the “globalization from below” category in the context of a political economy analysis. However, where my thesis differs from a more traditional analysis of the resistance to globalization, such as that found in the global justice movements or alter-globalization movements, is in its focus on the complexities of organizing at the local level and the pressures that these local organizations feel from “above” from their transnational partners. What this thesis adds to the literature are the stories from the actual members of the organization, about the structure, the decision-making process of their organization, the role of the leadership and the connections between the local organizing and the transnational civil society partners. The complex history of an organization that has been there since the beginning of the maquiladora industry allows us a better understanding of the changing conditions and struggles these workers have faced. This journey through the history of the CFO, the richness of this empirical data encompassing more than 30 years of organizing in the maquiladora zone of Northern Mexico also allows us to explore “globalization from below” through different lens. This thesis brings in a micro-detail analysis of a specific organization in a specific context where we can see clearly transnational civil society linkages and the impact of globalizing capitalist neoliberal economy. As such, this research can offer us new insights into the intricacies of local-global linkages and thus contribute to an area often neglected or underdeveloped in international relations (IR).
