Le phénomène du suicide chez les jeunes est toujours en progression au Québec et touche particulièrement les 15-19 ans, garçons et filles (Conseil Permanent de la Jeunesse, 1997; Institut national de santé publique du Québec, 2001). Plusieurs études soulignent l'importance de considérer certaines caractéristiques personnelles ou cognitives comme facteurs de risque du comportement suicidaire chez l'adolescent (p. ex., Grossman & Kruesi, 2000). Le perfectionnisme est l'une de ces caractéristiques à laquelle les écrits sur le suicide font parfois référence, ce qui contraste, par ailleurs, avec l'image prévalente de l'adolescent suicidaire. Récemment, des recherches empiriques ont démontré un lien entre un type de perfectionnisme et le comportement suicidaire auprès de populations cliniques d'adolescents (Boergers, Spirito, & Donaldson, 1998; Donaldson, Spirito, & Farnett, 2000; Hewitt, Newton, Flett, & Callander, 1997). La présente étude a pour objectif d'examiner les relations entre certaines dimensions du perfectionnisme (Hewitt & Flett, 1989) et les comportements suicidaires auprès d'une population non clinique d'adolescents des deux sexes. Au total, 362 jeunes âgés entre 14 et 17 ans ont répondu en milieu scolaire à un questionnaire écrit visant à mesurer : le perfectionnisme orienté vers soi (POS), le perfectionnisme prescrit par autrui (PPA) et les tendances suicidaires (incluant tentatives passées et idéations sérieuses). Les scores obtenus aux deux sous-échelles du perfectionnisme par les adolescents suicidaires et les non-suicidaires ont été comparés par le biais d'analyses de régression logistique. Les résultats révèlent que, des deux dimensions du perfectionnisme, seul le PPA est un prédicteur significatif des tendances suicidaires dans cet échantillon, tel qu'observé antérieurement auprès de populations cliniques. De plus, les analyses révèlent une interaction sexe x âge significative indiquant une probabilité d'être suicidaire plus élevée chez les filles que chez les garçons à l'âge de 14 et de 15 ans, pour une même valeur de PPA. Ces résultats obtenus auprès d'une population générale plutôt que clinique apportent un support empirique au construit de perfectionnisme, et plus spécifiquement à sa dimension sociale (PPA), comme variable caractéristique d'adolescents suicidaires.

The Effect of a Special Orientation Program for Entering Freshmen on Attrition, Satisfaction, and Grade Point AveragePatton, Carol R. (Carol Rogers) 08 1900 (has links)
This study was initiated to assess the effectiveness of a special orientation program with the purpose of reducing the anxiety of entering freshmen and easing their adjustment to the campus environment. The criteria of evaluation were retention, satisfaction, and academic achievement. The 468 subjects were first-time freshmen from outside Tarrant County entering Texas Christian University in the fall of 1980. Half of the subjects participated in the experimental program, Operation Welcome, and the other half served as a control group. Those in Operation Welcome were grouped in teams with eight other freshmen, two upperclassmen serving as a big brother and big sister, and a local alumni family. Each of the freshmen in the program received letters of welcome prior to leaving home and participated in special events upon arrival on campus.

It was further hypothesized that these differences would be greater for males than for females.

Life Orientation is the subject that was implemented as part of the Outcomes Based Education. It is an inter-disciplinary subject that is embedded in disciplines of Social Science, Arts, and the Humanities. The intention behind the program is promotion of the holistic development of, e.g. interpersonal skills, values, health, environment and religious education. The research was conducted at the University of Zululand in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province. The research design was qualitative in nature, and appreciative inquiry was used as an investigative tool. The study was conducted with the group of first year students that were registered for the academic year of 2009. Sampling was purposeful as the researcher’s specific criterion for participants were students who have attended the Life Orientation program in high school.

Investigation of the Structure-Activity Relationship of Pseudo-Single-Crystal Platinum Electrodes by Scanning Electrochemical MicroscopyWang, Yulin 14 December 2013 (has links)
The study of the structure-activity relationship of electrode surfaces is fundamentally important in electrocatalysis research. Yet, the methods and techniques used for the examination of structure-activity relationship so far are limited by their capabilities, and the exploration of electrochemistry at complex surfaces is very challenging. In this study, the correlation between the electrode surface structure and its corresponding activity in two electrochemical reactions were investigated: an electrochemical etching reaction and an electrocatalysis reaction. A polycrystalline Pt electrode was galvanically etched to expose the underlying well-defined crystallites serving as pseudo-single-crystal electrodes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) complemented with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was employed for the elucidation of the effects of electrode surface structure on its etching rate. Electrochemical measurements of the electrocatalytic activity of the hydrogen oxidation reaction on individual grain surfaces were performed with high spatial resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) coupled with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The etching experiment and surface characterization results show the more deeply etched regions on polycrystalline Pt surface correspond to Pt(100). The etching rate of the Pt catalyst is Pt(111), Pt(100), and Pt(110) in increasing order. The structure-reactivity relationship showed that the catalytic activity for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) increases in the order Pt(100) < Pt(110) < Pt(111), where the Miller index plane represents the terrace orientation of the high-index facets. A clear correlation is observed between the increase in HOR activity and step sites density on a given base orientation. Quantitative kinetic measurements at crystal domains were made from current-potential plots and SECM approach curves.

The present study examined levels of anxiety symptoms based on self-identified sexual orientation, and identity-related constructs among gays and lesbians. This study was unique because it examined the roles of identity and stigma simultaneously in determining anxiety levels among gays and lesbians. Multiple identity constructs (public and private regard) and stigma (public and self) have played a significant role in determining anxiety levels in ethnic minorities, but these have not been examined to the same extent among gays and lesbians. Public stigma refers to the view of society about the individual for being a member of the stigmatized group, while self-stigma is the personal view of themselves for being a member of the group. Public regard is the view of society on the group as a whole and private regard refers to the personal view of the stigmatized group. In order to test study hypotheses, secondary data analysis was conducted on a sample of participants who completed an online survey entitled “Study of Attitudes about Sexual Orientation” and who self- identified as homosexual or heterosexual. Participants were recruited from a southeastern university and the study was also open to non-students, community members, and the public at large via widespread advertisement online. College student participants were offered modest course credit for their participation in the study. Results indicated that homosexuals reported higher levels of public stigma (t (1376) = -37.992, p < .01) and increased self-stigma (R2 = .219 F (3, 156) = 14.569, p < .001) in relation to increased public stigma and decreased public regard. The findings of the study support the idea that public perceptions about sexual orientation impact homosexuals’ self views. Stigma interventions should focus not only on reducing negative public regard about homosexuality, but also intervene to reduce the impact of public views on the self.
