The effectiveness of doing grief work with children : an exploratory studyHardy, Nicola Elizabeth January 1993 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a group intervention with 12 bereaved children, aged 8-12. All of the children had been bereaved of a parent within the past 2 years. Due to the small number of children available for inclusion in the study, 6 of the children had previously received individual professional help for grief related issued. The design was a repeated measure pre and post intervention between group design. The study compared the two sub-groups of bereaved children with a group of non-bereaved children who were matched in terms of age and sex.

L'insertion professionnelle d'adultes porteurs de trisomie 21 : liens entre profils cognitifs, contexte de vie, autonomie et qualité de vie / The employment of adults with trisomy 21 : links between cognitive profile, living environments, autonomy and quality of lifeLemoine, Lise 08 December 2010 (has links)
It is acknowledged that the employment of adults with trisomy 21 (AT21) is beneficial in terms of autonomy and quality of life. While the issue is becoming more and more topical - most notably as a result of increased life expectancy - the employment of AT21s is also described as particularly difficult by workers in the field and has received little attention from researchers, especially not when seen in the specific context of the AT21s' cognitive abilities. The primary objective of this work is therefore to evaluate the cognitive abilities of AT21s (memory, language, reading, data processing and autonomy), their quality of life and that of their family depending on their type of employment. The sample comprises 32 AT21s aged from 20 to 35, equally divided between 4 living environments - sheltered or ordinary employment vs. occupational centres or return to a home environment - and members of their families (57 parents and 43 siblings). For each of the abilities studied, essential results show quantitative differences depending on the type of living environment, but the cognitive profile of AT21s appears very homogeneous. If there is a global connexion between employment and quality of life, this connexion is neither simple nor direct and requires an understanding of the dynamic interplay of work environment, the abilities of the subjects and specific family situations.

The effects of marital conflict and abuse on children : a pastoral care approachSifo, Luvuyo Gladstone 13 July 2011 (has links)
Traumatic conflict, abuse and violence within a marriage affect the children negatively. These children may develop signs associated with PTSD and maladjusted behavior in their adulthood. This pastoral care study is an investigation of the effects of marital conflict and abuse of children. It seeks to give answers to questions like:

How does traumatic conflict and abuse within a marriage impact on the lives of the children?

Does this traumatic conflict and abuse affect the children to continue the cycle of violence in their own homes when they grow up?

How can a child who grew up within an abusive and violent environment care pastorally for those who are in conflict and abusive marriages?

The researcher is a child who grew up in an environment of traumatic conflict and abuse with the marriage of his parents. He now ministers in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. In his pastoral care ministry, he encounters people who go through the devastation of traumatic abuse and violence in their own marriages. As a caregiver, he struggles to minister effectively to such people because he finds himself being traumatized again by his past, as well as their experiences. This study aims to heal the author of the traumatic wounds he sustained while growing up. It also aims to help probationer ministers, like himself, who grew up in a traumatizing environment. Finally, it aims to come up with a pastoral care methodology that the Methodist Church of Southern Africa could use in order to empower her ministers who may have grown up in dysfunctional environments as a result of abuse, trauma and violence. The author undertakes this study with the assumption that people who suffered traumatically in their childhood cannot minister effectively to those that come seeking for help. The findings of this study will therefore heal the ministers of the hurt and pain they sustained while growing up, and help the Methodist Church of Southern Africa to care for its ministers so that they can be effective in their ministry towards victims of traumatic conflict, abuse and violence within their parent’s marriages. / Dissertation (MA(Theol))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Exploring parental coping with childcare after the disclosure of child sexual abuseLakey, Abigail January 2011 (has links)
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW) / Child sexual abuse is a well-documented social crime that influences every aspect of the survivor and their family's lives. The parents are then confronted with a child that presents behavior that may include scholastic challenges, antisocial behaviour, sexual explorative behaviour as well as adult mannerisms. In addition, parents are then 'expected' to cope with their own feelings of guilt in relation to their child's affected behaviour. The aim of the study was to explore parental coping with childcare post the disclosure of child sexual abuse. This study used a qualitative methodological framework. A group of twelve (12) heterogeneous parents were purposively sampled from Childline case registers. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the parents, using an interview schedule and a voice recorder. The parents' interviews were transcribed verbatim, translated and verified with the parents. The data was analysed using thematic analysis in order to explore parents' experiences. The findings of the study reveal the participants' emotional responses to the disclosure of child sexual abuse, parental coping post the disclosure of CSA and available resources. These themes highlight the experiences of the parents who care for children post the disclosure of child sexual abuse. The study discusses the needs and challenges of the parents, and offers recommendations regarding provisions that can be made for these parents.

Examining the challenges of raising a family as a refugee parent in South Africa: A case study of Somali refugees in Cape TownMohamud, Bahja Ali January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / This research foregrounds the experiences of raising a family as a refugee parent in Cape Town, using a case study of Somali refugee parents. Global reports have shown that international migrants make up 3.5% of the world’s population, an estimated 272 million people. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 88.9% of international migrants have been displaced and reside within the Sub-Saharan African countries. Somali migrants arrived in South Africa due to a civil war that ravaged Somalia for over 20 years. Several studies investigated the migrants’ experiences in the host country

Thuthuedzo ya vhomazwale kha mbingano ya TshivendaMudau, Shumani Dora January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (African languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2014 / In this research an attempt has been made to assess and investigate the impact of the in-laws on Tshivenḓa marriage. This study was found to be necessary because although other scholars have investigated various aspects with regard to the impact of the in-laws on Tshivenḓa marriage, an in depth research on their impact has not been conducted.
According to the Tshivenḓa culture, when boys and girls become older they are expected to get married. So this marriage can be influenced negatively or positively by the in-laws. Some couples are forced to live with the in-laws. There are some marriages that do not last due to the negative interference of the in-laws but there are some marriages that are succeeding due to the positive relationship with the in-laws, therefore the aim of this research is to investigate the impact of in-laws on marriages.

Counseling and therapy practices of school psychologists with parents and familiesSpencer, Terrence Richard 01 January 1989 (has links)
A survey was conducted of 191 members of the National Association of School Psychologists who actually practiced in schools. The purpose of this study was to examine some of the self-reported differences which had not yet been investigated between two groups of school psychologists: those who do and those who do not choose to provide direct counseling/therapy services to parents and families. Some of these uninvestigated differences included time constraints, ratio of service, the perceptions of influence on their job roles, and the respondents' perceptions of administrative support. This study was also directed at determining the therapeutic models rated by members of the two groups as most useful and what differences exist in their beliefs about the factors important in the etiology of child referrals.
The results showed that very few school psychologists in school practice are actually engaged in counseling/therapy with parents and families although a majority of school psychologists think these services should be conducted in the schools. School psychologists who have administrative support, have time allotted for the activity, and who perceive more control over their job roles are more likely to be conducting counseling and therapy with parents and families in the schools. Likewise, school psychologists whose job descriptions discourage them from conducting counseling and therapy with parents and families in the schools are no less likely to engage in those services; nor does the number of students to be served relate to this decision. School psychologists' perceptions of the usefulness of any particular - therapeutic model do not appear to bear much relationship to their - choices to spend time providing services to parents and families. The only exception to this appears to be a relationship which exists between perceiving the usefulness of the Reality Therapy and Adlerian models and spending time in therapy with mothers and fathers. Also the relationship between seeing the usefulness of the Family Systems model and spending time in therapy with families was significant. No strong relationships existed between the choice to provide counseling/therapy to parents and families and beliefs about the perceived importance of various etiological factors when dealing with child problems.

Experiences of single parents of children diagnosed with AutismPurmasir, Swadhi Sharma January 2018 (has links)
Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disorders characterized by significant challenges in socialization, communication, and behaviour. Unlike many other chronic illnesses, ASD proves to be a difficult disorder for parents to cope with. Nonetheless not many studies have been conducted in the area, particularly focusing on single parents. This study aimed to add to this limited literature by extending the exploration to include experiences of all types of single parents in raising children diagnosed with autism in a South African context, specifically in Pretoria. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from six purposefully sampled mothers, and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The results revealed that participants were unaware of what the diagnosis of ASD meant for their children, and thus took it upon themselves to research and understand. Some of the challenges that single parents have had to face are the financial implications, behavioural problems as well as stigma. The single parents in this study showed resilience, as they were able to use resources that are available to them. Being a single parent to a child diagnosed with ASD has caused parents to adjust their lives to ensure that their child is given the biggest priority. / Mini Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2018. / Psychology / MA / Unrestricted
