Měření a analýza portfolia projektů jako součást řízení výkonnosti IT společnosti / Measurement and Analysis of the Project Portfolio as an Part Measuring IT Company´s productivity

This diploma thesis deals with the measurement and analysis of the project portfolio as an integral part measuring company's productivity. The goal is to project a model for measuring and analyzing the project portfolios for a specific medium-sized Czech IT company, operating in development and software sales. The work is based on a theoretical basis for the concept of Balanced Scorecard and for operating company's productivity, focused primarily on the portfolio, project management and monitoring. The practical part identifies the strategic objectives of the company, concerning the project portfolio, and arranges them into perspectives on the basis of the Balanced Scorecard concept. It also analyzes the way of monitoring the implementation of strategic objectives and determines in which phases the monitoring objectives are pursued. Further step is the definition of indicators and their attributes. Metrics are compiled of these attributes and a structure is projected for a presentation of metrics. Metrics are logically arranged so that the users are provided with information-based decisions and are arranged to find the causes of results the metrics show. The thesis has three main outputs. Firstly, it is a list of goals arranged to the Balanced Scorecard structure and identification of mutual structures among the objectives in the strategic map. Secondly, it is a model of parameters and metrics for managing project portfolios that can be applied to companies with similar characteristics, such as the company for which the model is implemented. The final outcome of this work is the implementation of the projected solutions in the Microsoft Business Intelligence.

Aplicação de práticas, métodos e ferramentas ágeis na gestão de portfólio de projetos

A utilização de uma gestão de portfólio de projetos permite que as empresas possam se adaptar rapidamente frente as turbulências advindas do ambiente interno e externo e com isso, possam rearranjar os projetos para que estes estejam alinhados com estratégia da organização. Entretanto, o modelo tradicional de gerenciamento de portfólio possui procedimentos que não seguem necessariamente essa característica de agilidade e adaptação. Na maioria das vezes os procedimentos são pouco visíveis, extensos e poucas vezes são interativos ou divulgados por todos os níveis hierárquicos das organizações. Dessa maneira o propósito deste trabalho é a aplicação de práticas, métodos e ferramentas ágeis na gestão de portfólio de projetos. Para isto, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura, a análise crítica do modelo tradicional por 7 especialistas da área e desenvolvimento de um modelo com base na análise das respostas das entrevistas por três especialistas sendo 2 da área acadêmica e 1 profissional da área. Os principais resultados revelam, que a existe uma escassez de trabalhos referentes a utilização de ferramentas ágeis em gestão de portfólio de projetos e na percepção dos entrevistados, a aplicação de práticas, métodos e ferramentas ágeis atende o quesito de gestão visual, melhor interação entre as equipes de trabalho, democratização da informação relativa à tomada de decisão e ferramentas alinhadas com a proposição ágil. / The use of project portfolio management allows companies to adapt quickly to the turbulence arising from the internal and external environment and with that, can rearrange the projects so that they are aligned with the organization's strategy. However, the traditional portfolio management model has procedures that do not necessarily follow this characteristic of agility and adaptation. Most of the time the procedures are barely visible, extensive and are rarely interactive or disseminated by all hierarchical levels of organizations. In this way, the purpose of this work is the incorporation of agile practices, methods and tools in project portfolio management. For this, a systematic review of the literature, the critical analysis of the traditional model by 7 specialists of the area and the development of a model based on the analysis of the answers of the interviews by three specialists were carried out, being 2 of the academic area and 1 professional of the area. The main results show that there is a shortage of work related to the use of agile tools in project portfolio management and the perception of the interviewees, the incorporation of agile practices, methods and tools attends to the question of visual management, better interaction between work teams, democratization of decision-making information and tools aligned with the agile proposition.

A propriedade intelectual, em especial as patentes, tornou-se uma questão importante para as gestões corporativa e tecnológica nas empresas. A quantidade de documentos de patentes que as empresas passaram a lidar aumentou substancialmente e de forma muito rápida nas últimas décadas, sendo a gestão do portfólio de patentes uma necessidade emergente dentro dessas corporações. O trabalho traz uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre o que há em gestão de portfólio de patentes, organiza a evolução e as tendências na gestão desses portfólios, apresenta as motivações para patentear, as características específicas de gestão de patentes e os modelos de gestão de portfólios de patentes encontrados. A partir da revisão da literatura e a escassez de artigos científicos relacionados a gestão de portfólio de patentes, foi identificada uma oportunidade para propor um modelo para fazer a gestão de portfólio de patentes com suporte de uma teoria consolidada (gestão de portfólio de novos produtos), relacionando as motivações para patentear e as características específicas identificadas. O estudo pretende contribuir com a proposição de um modelo de gestão que possui ancoragem teórica e indica como as patentes são geridas dentro do portfólio. O modelo foi validado e refinado com base em testes feitos com dados coletados em estudos de casos. Os casos forneceram ainda informações para derivar sugestões de ações para empresas obterem melhores práticas na gestão de seus portfólios de patentes. / Intellectual property, especially patents, has become an important issue for corporate and technological management in companies. The number of patent documents that companies have to deal with has very rapidly increased over the las decades and patent portfolio management has become an emerging need for these corporations. This work brings a systematic review on patent portfolio management, organizing the evolution and tendencies in the management of these portfolios, presenting the motivations for patenting, the specific features of patent management and models of portfolio management of patents found in the literature. From the literature review and the lack of scientific works related to patent portfolio management, was identified an opportunity to propose a model for managing patent portfolios supported by a consolidated theory (new product development portfolio management), relating the motivations for patenting and the specific features identified. The study intends to contribute to the proposition of a management model with theoretical anchorage and indicating how patents are managed within the portfolio. The model was validated and refined based on data collected from case studies. The cases also provided information to derive suggestions to companies to obtain best practices in the management of their patent portfolios.

Analysis of trade dependence and correlation of market returns between the United States and Nordic countries

The purpose of the present research paper was three fold. First, determine if there is a trade interdependence between the United States and Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Baltic States). Second, determine if there is correlation between the respective equity markets. Third, determine if the changes in the trade relations lead to the changes in stock market correlations. The hypothesis of the project was that weaker trade relations between two countries would lead to lower correlation between their stock markets, providing beneficial opportunities for portfolio diversification. The overall objective is to ascertain if Nordic markets are good targets to hedge portfolio risk for U.S. investors, and if the risks of investing in these markets would be rewarded by the higher returns.

The Black-Litterman Model : Towards its use in practice

The Black-Litterman model is analyzed in three steps seeking to investigate, develop and test the B-L model in an applied perspective. The first step mathematically derives the Black-Litterman model from a sampling theory approach generating a new interpretation of the model and an interpretable formula for the parameter weight-on-views.  The second step draws upon behavioural finance and partly explains why managers find B-L portfolios intuitively accurate and also comments on the risk that overconfident managers state too low levels-of-unconfidence. The third step, a case study, concerns the implementation of the B-L model at a bank. It generates insights about the key-features of the model and their interrelations, the importance of understanding the model when using it, alternative use of the model, differences between the model and reality and the influence of social and organisational context on the use of the model. The research implies that it is not the B-L model alone but the combination model-user-situation that may prove rewarding. Overall, the research indicates the great distance between theory and practice and the importance of understanding the B-L model to be able to keep a critical attitude to the model and its output. The research points towards the need for more research concerning the use of the B-L model taking cultural, social and organizational contexts into account. / QC 20101202

Control, Review and Monitoring of a Project Portfolio : The Study of Projects in the Implementation Phase

Introduction: A trend for organisations to change from single to multiple project management has been observed over the last couple of decades. Organizations shifted their focus from single project management towards the simultaneous management of the whole set of projects as one entity – project portfolio. New multi-project settings require a new management approach and practices to successfully manage a portfolio. A common practice in organizations is to evaluate projects after they had been carried out. At that point not much can be done and it is impossible to improve performance and prevent failure. Hence, problems that occur in projects’ implementation phase remain unsolved and even unidentified. Constant control, review and monitoring of projects’ performance in the implementation phase could lead to the problematic portfolio areas being spotted and timely management decisions being made in order to improve the overall portfolio performance. Problem: How do organisations manage projects within a portfolio that perform poorly in the implementation phase? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is: to describe to what extent and in what ways organizations control, review and monitor project performances in the implementation phase; to identify if organisations use any methods, tools or techniques in order to spot projects that perform poorly according to their expectations; and to discover what happens to the poorly performing projects in the implementation phase after they were identified. Method: An electronic qualitative questionnaire had been constructed and sent out to the 46 sampled Swedish companies currently running project portfolios. 115 most suitable respondents had been chosen to answer the survey. Frame of Reference: Theoretical framework is built on the literature within project portfolio management field, mostly concerning control, review and monitoring of projects of projects’ performance within their implementation phase; practices used to manage poorly performing projects as well as the value of organizational learning. Conclusion: The research results show that even though majority of the studied organizations are aware and striving towards efficient project portfolio control, review and monitoring, a lot of space for improvement still remains. Results reveal that organizations are trying to keep track of projects’ performance within a portfolio, however, very few poorly performing are identified. Moreover, the management practices for underperforming projects are still very limited if not non-existent.
