"Grammatical controversy on the temporality of the imperfect tense in the Qur’ānic text" Is it Mu’rab (declinable) or Mabnī (indeclinable)?Hassan, Fakhri January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This research discusses the temporality of Al-Fi’l Al-Moḍāri’ (present tense) in
Arabic in terms of structure and case endings. It also focuses on the time of the imperfect
tense and how it is affected by the Adawāt (particles) and justification as well as the
meaning, context and the purpose of the sentence.
The study also investigates the controversial issues on finding a standardized definition of
the actual imperfect tense in order to distinguish it from the outwardly one. It also
investigates the changes which the imperfect tense undergoes when preceded by particles
and how they change the case endings from Mabnī (Indicative) into Mu’rab apocopate (to
be Jussive or Subjunctive). Another focus is investigating the reason why the tense of the
verb that comes after particles of negation, prohibition, justification and denial is always
imperfect not perfect or future, regardless of the context and the purpose of the text, and the
reason as to why this rule applies to all Qur'ānic verses which contradict this rule when
being parsed.
In addition, it uses semiotics to explain the imperfect tense in the Qur'ānic verses and
investigates the effectiveness of applying abstention and assembly to distinguish between
the tense and it's meaning in the Qur'ānic text. This can help to determine the actual time
of the tense in the Qur'ānic text which in turn helps to parse the imperfect tense correctly
and to justify why there is a case ending which contradicts the grammar rules. The correct
parsing of the imperfect tense, including indicative, subjunctive and jussive, will pave the
way for more attempts to rectify the interpretation of the Qur'ānic verses which create
controversy. This can be achieved by presenting the verses which contradict the rules of
parsing, making hypotheses, analyzing them and then parsing them in a logical way utilizing
an analytical approach.

Vliv představitelnosti slov na osvojování slovních tvarů v češtině / Effects of Word Imageability on the Acquisition of Grammatical Morphology in Czech ChildrenKříž, Adam January 2013 (has links)
(in English): In many studies there was demonstrated that word's imageability - the ability of a word to produce a mental image of it's referent - affects the processing of its inflection (e.g. Prado - Ullman, 2009), its acquisition (e.g. McDonough et al., 2011) and the acquisition of grammatical morphemes (Smolík, in press). This thesis builds on the Smolík's paper, and its goal is to test whether the imageability of a word's stem influences the acquisition of its inflections in Czech children. Word imageability ratings and ratings of other variables that were assumed to affect the process of the acquisition of word inflections, were collected, then questionnaires were distributed to parents to examine how the forms of chosen words are acquired by children. The focus was on the acquisition of nominative plural of nouns, present tense in second person and past tense of verbs. The results show that the imageability significantly predicts the age of acquisition of the nominative in singular and all observed forms of verbs. The absence of the imegability effect on the acquisition of nominative in plural may be due to the overall high imageability and thus reduced variability of ratings in nouns in our dataset. Two possible explanations of the imageability effect on the acqusition of morphological...

Third-Person Present Tense as Stylistic Allusion to Theatre : A Study of Maggie O'Farrell's HamnetHermansson, Kajsa January 2023 (has links)
In this essay, I illustrate how the third-person present tense narrative perspective can be used as stylistic allusion to theatre, by studying Maggie O’Farrell 2020 historical fiction novel Hamnet. Previous studies conclude that present-tense narration has the effect of blurring the lines between narration and experience. However, while a first-person perspective lets the reader enter the consciousness of an experiencing “I”, the third-person perspective, although inhabiting the same spatiotemporal level as the characters, maintains an outside perspective, observing the events as they unfold. Conclusively, as the study will show, third-person present tense narration has the potential to function as stylistic allusion to theatre as it seemingly challenges reader perception, letting the reader into the experiencing level of the story, assuming the role of the observer, thus mimicking the experience of watching a stage performance at a theatre.

-S morphemes in L2 English : An investigation into student essays in grades 6, 9, and 12 in SwedenJoelsson, Klara January 2018 (has links)
Swedish students’ morpheme acquisition order in English, including the acquisition of -s morphemes, is a relatively unstudied topic. Given the morphological differences between the English and Swedish languages, students learning English in Sweden may encounter difficulties in the use of the third person singular present tense -s morpheme. Research also shows that Swedish students use the plural -s morpheme rather accurately at 9-10 years old. Mapping out the usage of the -s morphemes may pave the way for understanding the difficulties learners encounter in the use of such morphemes. Furthermore, looking into the usage of morphemes that have the same form but different grammatical functions (e.g.,-s morphemes) may help us understand the relationship between different proficiency levels and the accuracy rate of morpheme usage in L2 English. To this end, this study investigates a corpus of texts produced by students learning English in Sweden in grades 6, 9 and 12. The focus is particularly on the frequency and accuracy of the use of -s morphemes, aiming at revealing which type of -s morphemes has a higher accuracy rate. The results show that the accuracy rate with the plural -s morpheme is relatively higher, whereas the possessive -‘s morpheme is the most problematic one across all levels. Additionally, the largest issue with the contracted verb form of be -‘s was that the students did not add an apostrophe between the word and the -s, rather than not using the form at all. Lastly, the third person singular present tense-s accuracy was very low in grade 6 but increased a lot through grade 9 and 12 where more complex subjects were the largest issue. However, the results indicate that further research with a larger corpus size is required to be able to generalize the findings.

Prefix ex- u latinských sloves a jeho aspektová funkce / Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of AspectVaníková, Martina January 2019 (has links)
Prefix ex- u latinských sloves a jeho aspektová funkce Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of Aspect - disertační práce - Mgr. Martina Vaníková Summary The proposed thesis titled Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of Aspect is a pilot study that deals with the ways of expressing aspect in Latin, which is based on the detailed analysis of the functions of the verbal prefix ex- as one of the important components of this category. It also tries to find the method for the future research on the matter. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author gives summary of existing theories on aspect in general, with special attention given to the theories on aspect in the Czech and Latin language. The author defines the terms "aspect", "Aktionsart" and "situation type" at great length, and she particularly sets light to the term "telicity", distinguishing the "inherent telicity" from "maximizing". The practical part consist of: 1. a detailed analysis of all the occurrences of the indicative imperfect of the verbs with the prefix ex- from the corpus, which comprises of all well-preserved Latin texts from Plautus to Cicero; 2. an analysis of the indicative future and present tense forms of the selected verbs with the prefix ex-. Based on the analysis of the imperfect, the author verifies her hypothesis that the prefix...
