Tro, hopp och altruism : En komparativ analys av protagonisternas dygder och laster i MelGibsons Hacksaw Ridge och Martin Scorseses Silence.

Denna uppsats behandlar huruvida huvudkaraktärerna i Silence (2016) och Hacksaw Ridge (2016) påvisar dygderna tro, hopp och altruism respektive lasterna förnekelse, tvivel och högmod genom deras handlande och värderingar för att se hur detta förhåller sig till teologiska perspektiv kring vad som utgör en god kristen. Undersökningen visar att Desmond från Hacksaw Ridge är överväldigande trofast, hoppfull och altruistisk och det kan argumenteras för att han demonstrerar dessa dygder enligt de valda teologiska definitionerna. De motsvarande lasterna påvisar han väldigt lite, om överhuvudtaget. Rodriguez, huvudkaraktären i Silence tvivlar oftare, både på sig själv och på Guds plan. Huruvida hans val i slutet av filmen kan sägas vara altruistiskt i en kristen bemärkelse och väger upp hans offentliga avsägande av den kristna tron är något som de lärda lär tvista om.

Une première partie portesur une étude par simulation de deux méthodes automatiques de sélection du paramètre de laprocédure d'estimation ridge. D'un point de vue plus théorique, on présente et compare ensuite deuxméthodes de sélection d'un multiparamètre intervenant dans une procédure d'estimation d'unefonction de régression sur l'intervalle [0,1]. Dans une deuxième partie, on étudie la qualité del'estimateur PLS1, d'un point de vue théorique, à travers son risque quadratique et, plus précisément,le terme de variance dans la décomposition biais/variance de ce risque. Risk Evaluation of a Mercury Containment System

A probabilistic risk assessment model using GOLDSIM software was developed to evaluate the uncertainty of selected hydrological and soil parameters on mercury releases from a mercury containment system, which will be constructed within the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility in the Bear Creek Valley at the Oak Ridge Reservation in Tennessee. The main objective was to determine the concentrations and risk of exceeding the drinking water standard of mercury in a selected receptor well. A series of simulations were then conducted for various design periods, with emphasis on 10,000 years to determine those concentrations and risks. Experimental data for selected parameters such as dry bulk density, partition coefficient, and porosity and infiltration rate were represented by Probability Density Functions in support of Monte Carlo analyses. A sensitivity analysis showed that concentrations and risk are, for instance, most sensitive to porosity in the unsaturated zone. The simulations suggest that all herein estimates of concentrations and risks of mercury in drinking water should be well below established limits.

Composition and stratigraphy of late quaternary sediments from the northern end of Juan de Fuca Ridge

Sediments from the northern end of Juan de Fuca Ridge are Late Quaternary in age and contain widely correlatable cycles of turbidity current and hemipelagic sedimentation. Sediments from the Ridge were examined for their mineralogy, structure, components of the sand fraction, rates of sedimentation and grain size distribution to establish processes of sedimentation, stratigraphy, correlation and local hydrothermal relationships. Ten gravity and Phleger core sites along two profiles of the Ridge were examined in detail, one section was perpendicular to West Valley, the main spreading centre, and one section was within and parallel to West Valley. Sediment from Cascadia Basin was compared to the results of the Ridge study. Changes in sedimentation defined by core X-radiograph structure, components of the sand fraction and grain size distribution, indicated cycles of relatively coarse sediment overlain by finer bioturbated sediment with a repeated stratigraphic relationship in all but one Juan de Fuca Ridge core. Changes in sediment composition are attributed to brief, episodic, continent derived turbidity current deposition followed by lengthy periods of hemipelagic sedimentation for each cycle. Differences in composition exist between sediment of ridges and valleys, with a greater winnowed foraminiferal-hemipelagic and a lesser turbidity current influence in the former area. Radiocarbon dated foraminiferal-rich intervals from ridge sediments were exclusively Late Pleistocene with Middle Ridge sediment having an inferred 9000-9500 B.P. Late Pleistocene-Holocene boundary. Similar sedimentation cycles between Middle Ridge and valley localities enabled correlation of ridge and valley stratigraphy and the Late Pleistocene-Holocene boundary. A stratigraphic relationship based on the episodic deposition of continent derived turbidites exists between the northern end of Juan de Fuca Ridge and the continental Pacific Northwest. Pulses of turbidity current sedimentation coincide with initial interglacial warming trends during the Late Pleistocene. Holocene sedimentation for Juan de Fuca Ridge is of hemipelagic origin with rare local turbidity current deposition. An Integrated Flow and Transport Model to Study the Impact of Mercury Remediation Strategies for East Fork Poplar Creek Watershed, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

An integrated flow and transport model using MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 software was developed to predict the flow and transport of mercury, Hg(II), under varying environmental conditions. The model analyzed the impact of remediation scenarios within the East Fork Poplar Creek watershed of the Oak Ridge Reservation with respect to downstream concentration of mercury. The numerical simulations included the entire hydrological cycle: flow in rivers, overland flow, groundwater flow in the saturated and unsaturated zones, and evapotranspiration and precipitation time series. Stochastic parameters and hydrologic conditions over a five year period of historical hydrological data were used to analyze the hydrological cycle and to determine the prevailing mercury transport mechanism within the watershed. Simulations of remediation scenarios revealed that reduction of the highly contaminated point sources, rather than general remediation of the contaminant plume, has a more direct impact on downstream mercury concentrations.

Thermodynamic Cartography in Basalt-Hosted Hydrothermal Systems

abstract: Mantle derived basalts along the entirety of the Earth’s Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR) spreading centers are continuously altered by seawater, allowing the hydrosphere to subsume energy and exchange mass with the deep, slowly cooling Earth. Compositional heterogeneities inherent to these basalts—the result of innumerable geophysical and geochemical processes in the mantel and crust—generate spatial variation in the equilibrium states toward which these water-rock environments cascade. This alteration results in a unique distribution of precipitate assemblages, hydrothermal fluid chemistries, and energetic landscapes among ecosystems rooted within and above the seafloor. The equilibrium states for the full range of basalt compositional heterogeneity present today are calculated over all appropriate temperatures and extents of reaction with seawater, along with the non-equilibrium mixtures generated when hydrothermal fluids mix back into seawater. These mixes support ancient and diverse ecosystems fed not by the energy of the sun, but by the geochemical energy of the Earth. Facilitated by novel, high throughout code, this effort has yielded a high-resolution compositional database that is mapped back onto all ridge systems. By resolving the chemical and energetic consequences of basalt-seawater interaction to sub-ridge scales, alteration features that are globally homogeneous can be distinguished from those that are locally unique, guiding future field observations with testable geochemical and biochemical predictions. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Geological Sciences 2020

EXPANSIVE MODERNISM: FEMALE EDITORS, LITTLE MAGAZINES, AND NEW BOOK HISTORIES

The resurgence of modern periodical studies has expanded our understanding of “littleqrdquo; magazines and the editors behind them, but many studies continue to be restricted to the 1920s, examine male editors, and focus on well–established literary journals, rather than the subversive magazines that expanded the reign of modernism in the years from 1910 to 1950. These studies, though fascinating, privilege a select few and leave many lost to the archive. The new theory of book history and those who evaluate the book as a material object that is designed to circulate among a range of publics provide powerful and useful frameworks for recognizing the significance of what had previously been considered mere data. This study focuses on several neglected female little magazine editors who, despite various obstacles, powerfully intervened in the modernism debates throughout the 1910s through to the late 1940s by shaping successful publications to invite public appreciation of values they espoused. Unlike canonical modernist figures such as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot who championed an elite style of modernism that was usually inaccessible to most, Lola Ridge, Gwendolyn Bennett, Caresse Crosby, and Kay Boyle encouraged diversity and fostered heterogeneity by selecting and juxtaposing material by new writers and artists who moved easily around and over the borders separating high art and mass culture, who recovered marginalized voices from history, and who appealed for social justice. Further, their traditional and non–traditional roles while they served as editors show that in many cases being an editor meant more than just choosing works and arranging them. One chapter is devoted to Lola Ridge, the American literary editor of Broom (1922-1923). Ridge was a cosmopolitan modernist who welcomed a broad audience to Broom and invited readers to champion styles of writing and artwork that contained strong social commentary with American subjects, instead of copying European models that many argued were created for art's sake. Another chapter focuses on African American poet, graphic artist and literary columnist, Gwendolyn Bennett, who held several editorial roles at Opportunity, Fire!!, and Black Opals, from the mid–1920s until the early 1930s. A heterodox modernist, Bennett skillfully discussed and placed artistic work by members of the New Negro movement next to the work by their forefathers, subsequently fostering congeniality between the two conflicting literary groups and promoting a united front during the development of the Harlem Renaissance. She also promoted co–operation between black and white artists and writers with her universally themed poetry, graphic art, and literary column. Chapter four centers on Black Sun Press book publisher, novelist, and poet, Caresse Crosby, owner and editor of Portfolio (1945-1948), who challenged artistic reception on both sides of the Atlantic by bringing glamorous modernism to her unbound journal of eclectic work. Crosby promoted co–operation between artists and writers from conflicting World War II countries through the placement and types of materials she published on the pages of her magazine. The epilogue calls for scholars to expand their view of the modernist project and recover the often “hidden” work by overlooked female little magazine editors. Like Ridge, Bennett, and Crosby before her, Kay Boyle (This Quarter 1927-1929), who can be linked to each editor (directly or indirectly), relied on her trusted network of friends as she edited This Quarter. Her editorial support for young and experienced artists who used innovative styles and her commitment to social justice parallels her colleagues' dedication to the modernist project. These women's labor, the significant literary time periods they worked in, the different genres, critical content, and styles of modernism they championed, and the social formations their journals produced expanded the base of modernism and reinvigorated American art and literature between the Wars, leaving a legacy for future artists and writers.

Calibration of Option Pricing in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space

A parameter used in the Black-Scholes equation, volatility, is a measure for variation of the price of a financial instrument over time. Determining volatility is a fundamental issue in the valuation of financial instruments. This gives rise to an inverse problem known as the calibration problem for option pricing. This problem is shown to be ill-posed. We propose a regularization method and reformulate our calibration problem as a problem of finding the local volatility in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We defined a new volatility function which allows us to embrace both the financial and time factors of the options. We discuss the existence of the minimizer by using regu- larized reproducing kernel method and show that the regularizer resolves the numerical instability of the calibration problem. Finally, we apply our studied method to data sets of index options by simulation tests and discuss the empirical results obtained.

Lidar In Coastal Storm Surge Modeling: Modeling Linear Raised Features

A method for extracting linear raised features from laser scanned altimetry (LiDAR) datasets is presented. The objective is to automate the method so that elements in a coastal storm surge simulation finite element mesh might have their edges aligned along vertical terrain features. Terrain features of interest are those that are high and long enough to form a hydrodynamic impediment while being narrow enough that the features might be straddled and not modeled if element edges are not purposely aligned. These features are commonly raised roadbeds but may occur due to other manmade alterations to the terrain or natural terrain. The implementation uses the TauDEM watershed delineation software included in the MapWindow open source Geographic Information System to initially extract watershed boundaries. The watershed boundaries are then examined computationally to determine which sections warrant inclusion in the storm surge mesh. Introductory work towards applying image analysis techniques as an alternate means of vertical feature extraction is presented as well. Vertical feature lines extracted from a LiDAR dataset for Manatee County, Florida are included in a limited storm surge finite element mesh for the county and Tampa Bay. Storm surge simulations using the ADCIRC-2DDI model with two meshes, one which includes linear raised features as element edges and one which does not, verify the usefulness of the method.
