This investigation is based on a hypothesis in consequent of the following questions: How did the biblical narrators, evangelists, as well as correspondents, such as Paul, communicate or explain theological concepts or the εὐαγγέλιον to their urban, highly politicised, culturally diversified and Roman Law orientated audiences, readers or addressees? How may the word of God be explained to modern communities, urban societies who themselves too are highly politicised, live in a culturally diversified country and whose daily life is controlled by the laws of the country in which they live? In seeking to provide answers to these problematic questions, biblical scholars, past and present, have developed various theories and methodologies. Most of these theories and methodologies, though based on exegetical framework, have to this day not provided an adequate or satisfactory answer. There is in addition no consensus among past and present biblical scholars concerning this problem. Each of these theories or methods is limited. None of them is universal or a panacea (Keegan 1985:7). Since the 1970s new theories and methods in the form of rhetorical analysis following in the footsteps of Graeco-Roman rhetorical criticism have emerged and flourished (Du Toit 1992:465,468,469). These were subsequently followed by further developments, also based on the rethorical criticism approach, though with a different emphasis. Within the past 20 years or so, a new way of analysing the text of the Scripture (primarily the New Testament) has been developed. Recently Vorster (1990:107) stated that an analysis of the New Testament letters can no longer stop at a structural analysis, but has to take cognizance of aspects of conversational analysis and rhetoric; that an interactional model rather than a structural approach should be adopted in the analysis of letters. Theoretically, this is a bibliological research problem because to this day no study has produced a theory or an approach that addresses this problem. This fact also endorses the novelty of this research, because there is no study to date that provides an adequate response or solution to the problem concerning Paul’s contextualisation of juridical imagery with theological concepts in order to explain such concepts to his addressees. The number of different theories and approaches are indicative of the fact that the solution to the problem is not in sight as yet. This problem, though valid, cannot be easily solved. However, as investigations in this field proceed researchers will come closer to a solution. The hypothesis, which is under discussion in this thesis is: that Paul contextualised theological concepts with juridical imagery, which were well – known to his addressees by using rhetorical and logical techniques in order to explain these concepts to them. That this approached may be adopted and applied in contemporary exegesis and homiletics. This research brings into prominence Pauline contextualisation of theological concepts with juridical imagery in Romans. Like most of the other approaches, this new approach has also been developed from methods first used in secular studies (Keegan 1985:2). However, it differs from its predecessors in the sense that it investigates how Paul contextualised theological concepts in Romans by utilizing juridical imagery with which his addressees were knowledgable, in order to connect with his addressees’ frame of reference and explain such theological concepts to them. / Prof. Jan A. du Rand

PARTIE CRÉATIVE : Un violon sous la mer. Le roman prend place en Europe au tournant du XXe siècle et raconte l’histoire de Mathias Berthelot, un homme d’origine normande d’une trentaine d’années, incapable de tourner le dos à son passé qui le hante. Après bien des années de solitude, l’arrivée brusque d’un enfant qu’il est forcé de prendre en charge l’obligera, à travers un certain voyage initiatique, à porter un regard différent sur le monde. PARTIE RÉFLEXIVE : Réflexion sur l’intégration d’éléments socio-historiques dans l’écriture du roman : l’exemple d’un roman se déroulant en Europe au tournant du XXe siècle. Étant donné qu’Un violon sous la mer prend place en Europe au tournant du siècle dernier, l’écriture a nécessité beaucoup de recherches pour situer le récit à l’intérieur d’un décor approprié. Mais quels sont les effets de la recherche socio-historique sur l’écriture? De quelle façon est-elle un frein et, à la fois, un moteur de l’inspiration? Quelles sont les libertés que peut prendre l’écrivain quant à l’utilisation de l’Histoire? Voilà les questions auxquelles l’essai réflexif qui suit tentera de répondre.

Adrienne Maillet a fait paraître huit romans, un recueil de nouvelles et deux biographies en à peu près vingt ans, soit de 1937 à 1954. Malgré cette production importante, une réception critique favorable et quelques rééditions, très peu d'études lui ont été consacrées. Le présent mémoire vise donc à faire connaître cette écrivaine prolifique méconnue et son œuvre romanesque. Une grande partie des critiques et des relectures des romans de Maillet a insisté sur l’aspect sentimental ainsi que sur la grande moralité qui s’en dégage. Or, quelques récentes relectures de ceux-ci laissent entendre qu’il pourrait y avoir, derrière l’allure conformiste, une certaine part d’innovation. Il s’agit donc, dans le cadre de cette recherche, de vérifier si l’œuvre romanesque de Maillet se révèle idéologiquement ambigüe, entre conformisme et nouveauté, et comment elle développe ce double aspect. Pour ce faire, ce mémoire se décline en trois temps. Le premier chapitre établit tout d’abord le contexte historique et littéraire des années 1930-1940. Cette période est marquée par de nombreux bouleversements, de même que par le double sceau de la tradition et de la modernité. L’analyse de l’œuvre de Maillet se déroule pour sa part en deux temps. Le second chapitre porte sur l’aspect plus traditionnel des romans, leur appartenance au genre sentimental. Ceux-ci sont analysés à l’aide des théories sur le roman sentimental et le roman d’amour catholique, plus particulièrement celles d’Ellen Constans (1999). Par la forme qu’ils empruntent, les récits permettent l’inscription d’un premier discours conservateur à l’intérieur de l’œuvre romanesque de Maillet. Le dernier chapitre aborde pour sa part les différents aspects plus novateurs qui se retrouvent dans la production de la romancière. Il est entre autres question des particularités thématiques présentes dans les romans, soit la mise en place d’un espace urbain et bourgeois, de même que de certaines revendications féminines, voire féministes. Cette relecture de l’œuvre de Maillet permet tout d’abord de montrer que celle-ci n’est pas aussi univoque que la critique et la recherche l’ont d’abord cru, mais elle permet aussi d’enrichir nos connaissances en ce qui a trait à un domaine encore méconnu, l’écriture des femmes dans les années 1930-1940.

Abstract: The thesis focuses on the locality of the Roman period in Waldgirmes (contemporary Germany) in the context of Roman expansion in the time of Augustan rule. It concentrates on archaeological situation, structure and disposition of objects and used building technologies. It brings the interpretation of local space and references to ancient sources. It approaches a broader perspective from the viewpoint of Augustan horizon with its related invasion to Germany, where the axis of army penetration was formed by the rivers Lippe, Mohan and Lahn. As the Romans used to establish their supporting strategic points along these rivers, the thesis focuses also on other fortifications and constructions created in this period and in the given area.
