A crack closure system for cementitious composite materials using knotted shape memory polymer (k-SMP) fibres

Maddalena, R., Bonanno, L., Balzano, B., Tuinea-Bobe, Cristina-Luminita, Sweeney, John, Mihai, I. 06 September 2020 (has links)
Yes / Formation of cracks represents one of the major causes of concrete deterioration, which can lead to durability and safety issues. In this work, a novel crack closure system is developed, using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer fibres embedded in a mortar mix. The PET polymer has shape memory properties and shrinks upon thermal activation, if free to do so, or otherwise exerts shrinkage restraint forces. A single knot was manufactured at each end of the PET fibres to provide mechanical anchorage into the mortar matrix. Mortar samples with embedded knotted fibres were pre-cracked and subsequently placed in an oven to thermally activate the polymers and induce the shrinkage mechanism into the fibres. Crack closure was measured in the range 45–100%, depending on the geometry, dimension and distribution of the fibres, and the size of the initial crack. / This work is supported by UKRI-EPSRC (Grant No. EP/P02081X/1, Resilient Materials 4 Life, RM4L).

A shape memory polymer concrete crack closure system activated by electrical current

Teall, O., Pilegis, M., Davies, R., Sweeney, John, Jefferson, T., Lark, R., Gardner, D. 04 May 2018 (has links)
Yes / The presence of cracks has a negative impact on the durability of concrete by providing paths for corrosive materials to the embedded steel reinforcement. Cracks in concrete can be closed using shape memory polymers (SMP) which produce a compressive stress across the crack faces. This stress has been previously found to enhance the load recovery associated with autogenous selfhealing. This paper details the experiments undertaken to incorporate SMP tendons containing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filaments into reinforced and unreinforced 500 × 100 × 100 mm structural concrete beam samples. These tendons are activated via an electrical supply using a nickelchrome resistance wire heating system. The set-up, methodology and results of restrained shrinkage stress and crack closure experiments are explained. Crack closure of up to 85% in unreinforced beams and 26%–39% in reinforced beams is measured using crack-mouth opening displacement, microscope and digital image correlation equipment. Conclusions are made as to the effectiveness of the system and its potential for application within industry. / EPSRC for their funding of the Materials for Life (M4L) project (EP/K026631/1) and Costain Group PLC for industrial sponsorship of the project and author

Self-healing properties of mortar with crystalline admixture: experimental investigation and parameter optimization

Liu, B., Liang, Y., Jiang, J., Shi, J., Yalçınkaya, Ç., Ashour, Ashraf 26 July 2024 (has links)
Yes / The inclusion of crystalline admixture (CA) is a highly effective method for enhancing the self-repairing capabilities of mortar. This study examined the complexing abilities of different complexing agents under varying temperatures, pH levels, and ion species in order to select effective complexing agents for diverse environments, as complexing agents play a crucial role in CAs. After determining the type of complexing agent, an orthogonal array design was used to optimize the components of CA, and the strengthening mechanism of CA for mortar was discussed through microstructure analysis. The results showed that the complexation behavior of triethanolamine (TEA) and glycine performed better than sodium citrate (SC) for different pH, temperatures, and ion species. Meanwhile, TEA and glycine showed complementarity at different stages, so TEA and glycine were used as complexing agents in this study. Based on the orthogonal experiment, the optimal contents of Na2SiO3, Na2CO3, TEA, glycine, Ca(COOH)2, and nano-SiO2 in CA were determined to be 1.0%, 1.0%, 0.04%, 1.0%, 0.5%, and 1.0%, respectively. Under the synergistic effect of TEA and glycine, the hydration of aluminate and ferrialuminate was accelerated, and the hydration degree of cement paste was increased. At 28 d, the contents of CaCO3, C-S-H gel, and ettringite of cement paste with CA were higher than these of plain paste, but its Ca(OH)2 content was lower. Although the Ca(OH)2 content in the cement paste with CA was lower, the Ca(OH)2 crystal structure filled in the pores was larger. Therefore, the mortar mixed with CA exhibited higher compressive strength, water impermeability, and self-healing ability. / The full-text of this article will be released for public view at the end of the publisher embargo on 3 May 2025.

Étude expérimentale et modélisation de l'auto-cicatrisation des matériaux cimentaires avec additions minérales / Experimental study and modelisation of self-healing cementitious materials with mineral additions

Olivier, Kelly January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Self-healing of cementitious materials presents great interest to improve the durability of concrete structure (transfer properties for example). The impact of blast-furnace slag on this phenomenon is not yet clear even if the self-healing of concrete with blast-furnace slag was observed in building sites. To understand the blast-furnace slag influence, non-destructive methods were used to follow self-healing: X-ray tomography and gas permeability test. All specimens were cracked at 7 days and 28 days. The results show that the blast furnace slag has an interesting self-healing potential that can exceed the reference formulation results. This good potential depends on the physico-chemical characteristics of the raw materials and the hydration potential of the formulation over time. In addition to follow the self-healing, a new trial was set up to crack mortar specimens by restrained shrinkage and study the self-healing of a natural crack. In addition to follow the self-healing, a new trial was set up to crack mortar specimens by restrained shrinkage and study the self-healing of a natural crack. This test has proven effective over the reference formulation. The SEM with EDS analysis showed the formation of new products in the crack and the impact of storage conditions on these products : C-S-H for specimens stored in water and calcium carbonate for specimens stored in a damp chamber (CO2 + water). Migration chlorures and nano-indentation tests results showed that self-healing products had interesting durability properties and micro-mechanical properties (for calcium carbonate). Finally, self-healing modelling is proposed by means of geochemistry PHREEQC calculation code. The study revealed interesting potential PHREEQC to model self- healing phenomenon and make it a of predictive tool.

An Event Monitor and Response Framework Based on the WSLogA Architecture

Brett, Todd Christopher 01 January 2008 (has links)
Web services provide organizations with a powerful infrastructure by which information and products may be distributed, but the task of supporting Web service systems can be difficult due to the complex nature of environment configuration and operation. Tools are needed to monitor and analyze such Enterprise environments so that appropriate engineering, quality control, or business activities can be pursued. This investigation resulted in the development of a software development kit, the WSLogA Framework, which is inspired by the vision of Cruz et al. (2003, 2004). The WSLogA Framework provides distributed Enterprise systems with a platform for comprehensive information capture and environment management. Five component groups are intended for employment to enable integrated workflows addressing monitoring and response activities, but these components may also be used individually to facilitate the phased integration of the WSLogA Framework into existing environments. The WSLogA Framework's design is portable across technology platforms (e.g., Java and .NET) and a variety of technologies may be substituted for the provided implementations to address unique system architectures. The WSLogA Framework supersedes existing logging and monitoring solutions in terms of both capability and intent. Applications based on the WSLogA Framework have an internal, real-time view of their operation and may adjust their environment based on the information provided by events related to their or system activities. The WSLogA Framework is intended as a software development kit around which system functionality may be organized and implemented, which makes the WSLogA Framework an architectural peer or complement to traditional application frameworks such as Spring's Web module. WSLogA Framework based systems should be envisioned as information appliance elements rather than traditionally scoped applications or services.

Study of the precursor emulsion in encapsulation of linseed oil and doping the microcapsules into a paint in order to make it self-healing.

Corrêa, Bruna Barros de Mattos 16 February 2017 (has links)
The corrosion of metallic materials causes serious financial losses and environmental impacts. Although efficient, organic coatings may generate cracks over time, generating potential sites for corrosion. Hence, the self-healing concept on coatings has been studied in order to minimize this type of damage, without requiring human intervention. The encapsulation method of film formers in polymeric microcapsules is widely used in self-healing systems. In this study, the emulsification process of linseed oil was investigated, since it is a determining step to obtain the microcapsules that will later be doped in a water based epoxy primer. Initially, it was necessary to improve the emulsion preparation, by analyzing three types of surfactants with different properties and compositions. A statistical planning adopting the full factorial design model was conducted for each of the surfactants, in which the factors considered were the variation of the weight fraction of surfactant, and the use or not of ultrasound, Ultra-Turrax® disperser and sodium chloride. The small number of trials involved and the simplicity to analyze and interpret the data justify the choice of this statistical model. The response variables were the determination of the droplet volumetric mean diameter and the measurement of the zeta potential of the emulsions to assess its stability. Moreover, the shape and characteristics of the droplets were observed with the aid of an optical microscope. The emulsion stability was also evaluated by observation and photographic register of phase separation after some rest time in a test tube. After determining the best surfactant and conditions for the emulsification to obtain the microcapsules, they were produced and added to the primer, which was applied on carbon steel specimens. The self-healing effect provided by the rupture of the microcapsules after an intentional defect was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and accelerated corrosion tests in a salt spray chamber (SSC). The microcapsules were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM).

Silva, Lucilia Maria Silveira Bernardino da January 2016 (has links)
The growing concern with the performance of structures has encouraged several segments of society to find solutions to improve concrete durability. Several studies have been made to provide a better understanding of the mechanical properties and concrete durability in different conditions. This study assessed the drying shrinkage performance of preloaded concrete. Cement types CP V ARI, equivalent to Portland type III (ASTM C150/C150M-16e1) and CP IV, equivalent to Portland type IP (ASTM C595/C595M-16) were used with w/b = 0.35, 0.50 and 0.70 and curing ages of 7 and 28 days. At the ages of 1, 3 and 7 days, concrete mixes were subject to loads of 25%, 50% and 75% of their mean ultimate flexural strength (Brazilian Standard NBR 12142, ABNT, 2010). Drying shrinkage in reference and preloaded concrete was determined according to ASTM C157/C157M-14e1. Additional tests included ultrasound pulse velocity (NBR 8802, ABNT, 2013), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray microtomography. Preloaded CP V ARI cement concrete showed a drop in mean shrinkage when compared with the reference mix, except for the mix with w/b = 0.35 cured for 7 days. For CP IV cement, mean shrinkage dropped with w/b =0.70 for both curing ages. Early loading caused a compaction effect, promoting the weakest compounds of the matrix to be broken, filling the capillary voids. In this process some unhydrous grains probably were exposed. On the other hand, microcracking also occurred, lefting unhydrated grains exposed in the microcracks walls. Due to immersion curing, the availability of water promoted the hydration continuity. New resistant hydrates filled the large voids and reduced the total and effective porosities in the cement matrix. The hydration of anhydrous grains in the microcracks walls had led to self-healing, with partial resistance capacity recovery. The combined effect of these factors promoted the drying shrinkage reducing, mainly for the more porous concrets.
